Why this should be is only partly explained by the true new car sales figures for September, down to 430,763 including last minute registrations to ‘fleets’.

  • Not so Cheap at Auction Today 16 Nov 2001 (News)
And no one was convinced by the £10,500 apparently paid for a 77,000 mile 99S E46 318iS because, minutes later, top bid for an otherwise identical 73,000 mile 99T was £9,950. Repossessed personal imports didn't exactly set the halls alight either with just £13,650 bid for a 22,000 mile 99T BMW Z3 2.8 and £22,500 for a 42,000 mile 99T Mercedes SL320, possibly because the snatchback squad forgot the hard-top.
  • Rush to Buy Sends Auction Prices Soaring 6 Jul 2001 (News)
And you should have seen the crazies battle over a Mercedes. Mega miles mean lower import duties in the Far East with the result that an eminently exportable 123,000 mile 98R C180 Sport auto in silver started at a sensible £5,800 but went on to sell for all of £9,200. In contrast, a very smart 74,000 mile 98R C240 Sport auto sold for just £10,350.

The left-hand drive also spent some of its early years in the United States. It was then imported back to Germany in July 1986 when it was purchased by the President of the German Classic Porsche 911 Club, Wolfram Thonemann, who obtained the apt registration 'K-RS 911’. During his ownership, the car was successfully campaigned on racing circuits in Germany and around Europe, even becoming the Europa Cup Class 6 Champion of 1987.  In December 1996 the car changed hands and continued its motorsport legacy competing in international classic rallies, including prestigious events such as the Hockenheim Regularity Rally, Mont Ventoux, Modena Cento Ore, Tour De España, and Tour Auto, where it won the Regularity class in 2009.  Characteristic features of the car include Fuchs alloy wheels, distinctive fibreglass front bumper and iconic ducktail spoiler.

Shipping companies quickly became Andrew’s friend."

  • 1955 Dellow Mk II B in Historics 20th August Brooklands Auction 4 Aug 2016 (News)
A dream project if it comes cheap enough, this 1971 left hand drive Volkswagen Karmann Ghia convertible was imported from the USA in 2014, but has since remained unrestored. The canvas top seems to be fairly new and though a lot of tidying is required it is reported to be relatively rust free and the engine runs well.

Facel Vega HK500 - estimate £58,000-£64,000 This one was imported into the UK in 1990 by the vendor, and has been dry stored ever since. The car starts, runs, and drives but doesn’t have an MoT. It carries an estimate of £58,000-£64,000. But this is a Jaguar sale, after all, so you’d expect to see a Mk2.
  • Goodbye to the tax disc 1 Oct 2014 (News)
Unless you’ve managed to avoid all the recent news stories relating to the demise of the tax disc, you’ll already know that Wednesday, 1 October, is the day when Britain’s motorists finally bid farewell to this all-important circular piece of paper. It doesn’t mean the end of Vehicle Excise Duty, though – and it seems there’s still some confusion over the future of VED and how it’s now implemented.    The death of the tax disc was announced as part of Chancellor George Osborne’s 2013 Autumn Statement, with the system moving to a fully digital service.
  • Report: Barons 17th December 2013 23 Dec 2013 (News)
A first generation pre-Airflow 1964 Lotus Cortina proved to be the star of the day at Barons 17th December auction at Sandown Park, Esher, eventually selling to a New Zealand telephone bidder for £48,172, inclusive.   Important post-sale deals included £36,000 inclusive for the 1965 Jaguar E-Type 4.2 roadster restoration project, proving that the early pre-sale estimate had been wildly optimistic. (This had later been brought down to a more sensible level.)

  • 1957 Ford Zephyr Convertible Makes £22,412 at Barons 1 Nov 2012 (News)
The 1965 Fiat 500D with just 35,600 miles on the clock would probably have made more than its £8,100 if it had come with more paperwork - demonstrating that it's important for owners to try to hang on to all the administrative bits and pieces that a car accumulates over the years.  Entries for Barons' Yuletide Classic on December 18th are already rolling in, with a rare 1966 428 Thunderbird Convertible and an even rarer 1965 Margrave Wood and Picket Mini Cooper S topping the list at the moment.
