  During re-generation,with particulate filter equipped diesels, do injectors really blast fuel into the cylinders on the exhaust stroke, wetting bores and contaminating oil? Or is there a separate injector just upstream of the DPF? Is there a better engineering solution to cleaning a particulate filter?   For the past 18 months i've been monitoring the DPF in my Kia Sportage 2017, 1.7 diesel with an OBD plug in and Car Scanner pro on i phone. The car has done 27k miles. Virtually every regen it's performed has been after 160 - 170 miles when the soot level reaches 15 to 16 grams.

    Quite fancy another diesel but I cover short trips much of the time with the odd 700-mile round trip.  Sooo, I'm looking for a diesel without DPF, and ideally with a chain cam drive and no DMF.  Something with reasonable grunt to replace the Leon which had 150hp standard and 175 after remapping. Is there any modern-ish diesel out there which doesn't have the DPF/DMF/cambelt hassles AND has proven to be reasonably reliable?

  Then at weekends usually twice a month we will do a long trip to visit family which involves an hour to an hour and a half of motorway and dual carridgeway for at least 3/4 of that journey. I know it is difficult to say, but if the problems are only DPF regen related, will the above useage patterns mean we are ok and the DPF will regen ok and not give us problems?

  I only do about 15k/annum and I think I may be better off with Petrol. Do they/the car tell you when you NEED to regenerate the DPF, or do you need a regular Italian tune up, which defeats the purpose somewhat. I was thinking that diesel cars need some sort of exhaust temperature monitoring so you could be sure you were in the "zone" of good?
