Filter tip - DPF regeneration

I've run a BMW E60 525SE petrol auto from new. It's 6 years old and I intend to change it for a new F10 5-Series. There are compelling paper reasons for choosing a 520 Diesel SE auto (enough power for me, good torque, low emissions, value for money). However, the majority of my daily journeys are quite short commuter ones (11 miles) and I've read your wise comments about DPFs and their associated problems when used on my kind of journey.

Would therefore a 523 (or 528) petrol-engined F10 be the more sensible choice in the long term? Alternatively, would a 520 be OK as long as I did at least one 50 mile constant speed run every month? I plan to keep the car for 5-6 years.

BMW itself advises diesel owners to make regular long runs in order to regenerate their DPFs and charge their batteries. But 11 miles should get the exhaust hot enough. What would kill it would be repeated short runs from cold of just a few miles, or less.
