  • 505,000 Mile Combo 10 Sep 2008 (News)
Van drivers have a reputation for racking up more miles than most, but in Nigel Weaver’s case the last half a million have all been in the same vehicle. The 53-year old courier from Maidenhead, Berks, bought his Vauxhall Combo new from Burnham Garage in Slough in 2001, just as the model was making its debut. Seven years later, after averaging over 75,000 miles a year, Nigel’s Combo has just clocked up its first 500,000 miles, all on the original engine.

  • Honest John's Motoring Agony Column: 23-5-2015 23 May 2015 (News)
The Privacy Phone is missing. The handbook clearly states this as being “provided” with the car. Initially the dealer said that I should not expect to find this in a 10-year old car, but their last statement says “the car was not advertised or sold with the benefit of a Privacy Phone being fitted” and that it was my responsibility to satisfy myself with the condition and specification of the car prior to taking delivery.
  • Foreign entries rev up for Croft Nostalgia Weekend 1 Aug 2011 (News)
But they will have to beat a number of local racers all eager to shine in front of their home crowd – among them 18-year-old James Buckton from Harrogate in his historic Elden Formula Ford, York’s Robert Rook and Selby’s Jim Clark in their Ford Lotus Cortinas, fellow saloon car racer Andy Yool from Barrow-in-Furness in his Ford Anglia, Workington’s Robert Gates in his evocative E-type Jaguar and Whitley Bay’s Richard Evans in his sensational March Formula 2 car.
  • Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 11-4-2015 11 Apr 2015 (News)
This garage suggests the car suffers from condensation and this is quite normal. Am I being fobbed off? Can the dealer more local to me refuse to fix the car? I didn't expect to start so many trips in my ‘new’ car by needing to dry off the windscreen.  TW, via email There must be a leak admitting cold, damp air to the interior of the car.
  • Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 4 Apr 2015 (News)
Noted 2-12-2013: Report of MoT Advisory for rusting brake pipes on 45k mile November 2007/57 C220 CDI. Car then also 6 years old. You should press MB to pay, saying it is a safety concern.   Crash cams An in-car camera seems to me to be potentially useful not just to provide evidence in the event of an accident, but also to record the kind of idiotic behaviour by other road users that deserves to be reported.

  • E60 525d Sold For £11,600 at Auction Today 30 Apr 2007 (News)
The first I’d seen with steel wheels. A 97P Mondeo V6 Ghia X looked very cheap at £275, but was, of course, 10 years old and could have had any number of expensive faults. While a 1989 Espace for £120 was for nothing. Please note that to help prevent cars disappearing Auctions are now obliged to submit buyers details to the DVLA and the charge for this is £23.50.
  • Three Sucata Charity Banger Rallies This Summer 29 Mar 2012 (News)
.  Blue Peter and Dancing on Ice star Andy Akinwolere has signed up the  Sucata Run this year (driving an old banger worth less than £350 from  Normandy to Portugal). Sucata Rallies attracts participants from all walks of life and interest groups with one common goal of completing the tours and raising a stash of cash for a fantastic course into the bargain.  Each team member is asked to raise a minimum of £250 for Gemin-i, and are asked to use an old cars (always affectionately referred to as ‘bangers’) worth less than £350.
  • 1962 E-Type Roadster ex-Nina Aga Khan Up For Auction Today 22 Nov 2016 (News)
The cream E-Type Roadster disappeared and it was presumed lost for ever. However, by chance, an Englishman holidaying in Jamaica last year, was told of two old cars in storage on the island. He duly went to see them, finding a red E-Type coupe and the cream roadster. A deal was struck and the roadster was soon on its way back to the UK. It was only after he applied for a Heritage Certificate that he realised the car was no ordinary E-Type and had such a fascinating story to tell.
  • Gender-neutral policies - what to do if you're a woman driver 26 Nov 2012 (News)
From 21 December, and following a ruling by the European Court of Justice in March 2011, car insurance companies will no longer be able to take gender into account when it comes to calculating annual premiums. And the net effect is likely to be a significant increase in costs for women as car insurance equalise the gap that currently exists between male and female drivers.
  • The MoT Files: Exemption for pre-1960s cars. Do the numbers stack up? 6 May 2014 (News)
Looking at it this way, the argument for keeping the test on pre-1960 cars seems about as strong as that for introducing the test on two year old cars. But - and this is a big one - is that you could argue that without the MoT test there could be almost 10,000 unroadworthy cars on the road and the big danger is that no one will know.
  • Preview: Barons Jaguar Heritage Auction, Sandown Park 29 Mar 2013 (News)
This very special motor car carries an estimate of £27,000-£35,000. The earliest car in the sale, the 1939 Freestone & Webb E4 Straight 8 Daimler Limousine, is one of just five such cars ever built, and now believed to be the only one left in existence.
  • Scrappage in the USA 31 Jul 2009 (News)
Congress’s prudish green plan is limited to a measly 250,000 trade-ins, as a host of new cars sitting on dealer lots don’t qualify for the program. Want to trade in your old 2000 Ford Explorer SUV for a new one? No chance. The 16 mpg Explorer is not morally approved by Washington.
  • eBay Auction Report 19th April 2005 20 Apr 2005 (News)
There is probably no-one in the country who hasn’t heard of MG Rover’s demise, and there will be many people wondering how the second hand prices will hold up. A MG TF, possibly the MGR car with the best chance of holding its value, was sold for a slightly low £8,000. It was a 135bhp version with 16,500miles on a 2002/52 plate and in good condition. But Car Giant are selling one year old examples with half the mileage for only £1,500 more.
  • A Grand Monday: Mercedes-Benz E220 W124 29 May 2017 (News)
There are good cars for their era, and there are some truly great ones. The Mercedes-Benz 'W124' E-Class falls into the latter category. Launched in 1986, it was, at the time (and for quite some time thereafter) the world's best estate car.
