  • PSA Diesels - 1.6 or 2.0 more reliable? 23 Nov 2011 (Forum)
Would I be right in thinking that there is a ballpark 10mpg difference between the two engines in every day use? So basically it comes down to the likelihood of extra-ordinary running costs. I tend to hear more horror stories about the 1.6 than the 2.0. e.g. the sludging up issue - repetitive turbo failures caused by EGRs etc. Both have DMF and DPF but is one generally more troublesome than the other?
  • Best sounds for Electric/Hybrid cars? 15 Nov 2011 (Forum)
People should look both ways before stepping into the road so should see it coming, anybody who relies alone on hearing it should be run over as part of natural selection. It shouldnt affect blind people either because dogs can see them like any other car and can stop them at the side of the road, y'know, providing they dont turn it into a 'shared space' which is a great way of lowering the pensions bill.
  • SEAT Leon FR TDI 1.9PD - SEAT Leon FR TDI 1.9PD diesel - lack of power 2 Nov 2011 (Forum)
Recently bought a Seat Leon with the 1.9 VW diesel in 150hp form.  However, I am convinced the car is not running right as it seems sluggish across the board and does not accelerate hard in the lower gears as would be expected of a reasonably powerful turbodiesel.  The car will still do 70+ on the motorway so does not seem to be in limp mode.
  • Peugeot 306 2.0HDi Meridian 2000/W - Engine Management Light 25 Oct 2011 (Forum)
Over the last few months, I've had intermittent high revving at tickover - about 1k, may be slightly higher but this has come and gone about 3 times..... Also, I re-fueled yesterday but had let the fuel level run down really low..... When starting the light briefly goes out then comes back on immediately and stays on. Is it safe to use until I get it sorted. Suggestions: open to reasonble and clean ones.... lol
  • Volkswagen Polo III 1.4 1996 - High CO and slight miss on idle. 6 Oct 2011 (Forum)
Car failed on high CO (.45) on idle and high revs. Car runs fine apart from when warm and on idle it "missis a beat" every so often (5-15 seconds). Ticks over about 850rpm then suddenly just drops to about 750rpm and straight  back up again. The missing seems to throw the HC, CO, and O2 up and fails MOT.
  • VW Passat 2.0 TDI Estate - Buying a high mileage (+30k/year) VW diesel? 23 Sep 2011 (Forum)
Is the old adage about German diesel's true? That assuming the FSH is genuine these engines are more than capable of running up huge miles without any problems. Would you be concerned that the car's been doing +30k miles a year? Does it mater that it's probably an ex-sales rep or taxi car? How do I confirm the service history is genuine?
  • Chrysler Grand Voyager - Immobiliser problems 30 Aug 2011 (Forum)
This time the fault is permanent and I'm stuck without a vehicle. A friendly mechanic has run a diagnostics check and it's definitely the immobiliser. The check shows no faults. The car starts but there's no gears, or gear display lights and it cuts out after 6 seconds. A quick check on your website has led me to the 21 pin wiring problems under the heater panel.
  • VW Passat TDI CR 170 DSG Estate - air-con failure - stone damage or dealer con? 16 Aug 2011 (Forum)
Why not fine mess grill to save damage? any thoughts? Is it worth taking this up with VW? We run a mini-fleet of 3 VWs.
  • Renault Clio Sport Tourer diesel (2010) - Small fuel leak after filling up 1 Aug 2011 (Forum)
If it is meant to drain it back into the tank, it may either be leaking or not working; or of course there may be a slight leak somehere around the filler pipe itself.  Once the car has run just a few miles, the leak stops.  The total amount leaking is probably pretty small, but visible drips can be seen.  I was first alerted to it by an oil bloom on the wet tarmac of my driveway where the car is usually parked.
  • Vauxhall Astra G Petrol - Air Conditioning - Please help! 1 Jul 2011 (Forum)
When I bought the car second hand, the air con wasn't working at all. I took it to ATS who run a test and found the system was empty. They regassed it and it worked perfectly for about two days, and then just stopped. I took it back in and they used a dye to check for leaks, but there weren't any, and the system was still fully gassed and oiled.
  • Vauxhall Corsa D 1.3 CDTI 90PS 2007 - Erratic revving 4 Jun 2011 (Forum)
Around town the vehicle is ok, it is just when the car is being used on National Speed Limits and on the approach to motorways and acceleration is harder than usual.  It is as though the turbo is kicking in and is running faster than the engine. Car was recently serviced and had a clean bill of health. I wondered if it was a sticking clutch but have ruled that one out.  Checked the oil levels this is ok, as I have heard that over filling can cause the problem with an over revving engine.
  • Volkswagen Golf - VAG 1.6 tdi or 2.0 tdi? 31 May 2011 (Forum)
Ofcourse I should drive one, but awkward with it being a fleet buy, and without a proper drive on a run-in motor, not sure it would really help. Any help from those that know would be much appreciated.
  • Ford Mondeo II (1996 - 2000) - 1999 2.0 petrol burning oil horrifically... 8 May 2011 (Forum)
Popped some 5w-30 in it, and then some more, and eventually almost the whole can, but still reading empty on the stick. Definitely no leaks underneath. However, running the thing now results in horrific clouds of blue smoke. Drove it ten miles and it was smoking so badly I got pulled over. Thus, I'm guessing it's for the knackers yard - however as it sounds and drives so well, I'm wondering whether it could actually be something wrong with the dipstick and I've ended up overfilling it?
  • £7k for runabout for sister with new baby! 1 May 2011 (Forum)
Her hubby has a work car, Volvo estate, and their old motor is a 2002 Golf 1.6 mark 4 which is showing it's age.  I might advise her initially to run around in the Golf untill it packs in (it has a few niggles and on a 10 year old car from VW it won't necessarily be worth spending money & hassle trying to repair) She has a notional budget of £7k for a replacement and requirements are as follows: * A main dealer car - she & hubby have no expertise whatsoever & want the peace of mind of dealing with a dealership * No more than 3 years old, must be reliable, not worth buying an older car they don't want the hassle * Only used for local trips & very occasional longer journeys with hubby I would suggest something like a Focus as they seem to be well thought of, safe, and plenty to choose from.
  • Renault Megane Coupe-Cabriolet 2005 1.6 petrol - intermittent camshaft knocking 15 Apr 2011 (Forum)
hi, can anyone suggest a reason for this problem ive recently bought a 2005 renault megane petrol ,the car has covered just 35000 miles. when the car first starts the camshaft appears to knock for a few seconds before running smoothly and quiet .The engine management light comes on and stays on. ive had the oil and filter changed.used a fuel additive to remove any carbon deposit on the valves and had the camshaft sensor changed.the ecu light stays off after resetting until the engine is cold .When i start it from cold the camshaft ?
  • Volkswagen Polo III (1994 - 1999) - 1998 1.6 Engine cuts out and will not start 10 Mar 2011 (Forum)
Wonder if anyone can shed some light on this intermittant fault. Polo will run beautifully for days on end then occasionally when warm and as you come to rest, engine cuts out. It will turn over fine but will not fire up until left several minutes, then drives fine again. No warning light shows at all, did have new coil pack about a year ago when it rerfused to start from cold.
  • Mazda Xedos 6 (1992 - 1998) - 92 2.0 Kangaroo petrol 18 Jan 2011 (Forum)
Even then, there is a fair amount of what feels like fuel surge, but I'm not up to speed on how injection systems behave, I'm afraid. The slow running is lumpy and I've wound in the butterfly stop screw, with only partial success. If it had a carburettor, I would suspect the low speed jets, but I don't know what the equivalent would be! It could almost be an ignition problem (HJ mentions this in the car-by-car) but there are plenty of sparks at idle, despite the lumpiness, so I suspect fuel, although at high speed there is no problem.
  • Mazda 6 - LPG Conversion massive increase in fuel use 12 Jan 2011 (Forum)
the idling speed is high on starting from cold, and then begins to vary in rate, surging up to about 1500rpm every second, then dropping to 1000. There is a considerable over-run when I throttle off. Otherwise the ride is fine. But there's no point converting to half price fuel if you then use it at twice the rate. If anyone has any advice as to what he might have done or where we ought to be looking I'd be grateful.
  • Peugeot 306 2.0 16v Xsi - High Idling 4 Jan 2011 (Forum)
Hallo,  Can anyone advise on this problem with my wife's car.It runs fine  but has the odd habit of the revs not wanting to drop... When STATIONARY it will idle (when warm) at a steady 800 rpm, but when coasting down to a halt it will not rev below 1500 rpm! As long as the car is in motion the revs stay up, even as slow as 3 mph.
  • Some budget tyres can take extra 14m to stop 23 Dec 2010 (Forum)
BBC TV's Fake Britain with presenter Dom Littlewood showed that budget tyre manufacturers are copying the tread patterns of premium brands but that the rubber compound is in some (or all?) cases inferior to the premium brand. In specialist tests, this meant vehicles running on budget tyres took a lot longer to stop particularly in the wet, eg 14 metres more at 70mph. Apparently tyres need not pass a wet stopping distance test in the UK! (Of all the H & S we incorporated where you can't make a cup of tea in an office without seeing warning labels on the kettle and jar of coffee whitener, they forget to legislate safety with tyres?!)
