Volkswagen Golf - VAG 1.6 tdi or 2.0 tdi? - mph1

Hi Folks - new here, so be gentle...

Looking at a company car, but money tight. Whittled it down to Golf Match Bluemotion Tech - but which engine? On my all-in-costs, the 1.6 is £30 per month less than the 2.0. I'm currently in a starship-miler 2001 Citroen C5 TD that might have been 90bhp one day in its past(!), but before then I had a 2007 170bhp Passat Estate, and before then a 2004 140bhp A3 DSG. Point is that anything would be an improvement, but will the 1.6 disappoint? Happy to spend the extra £30 per month for some smiles, but don't want to waste my money.

I do about 25000 miles a year, mostly motorways, but with a bit of A road thrown in - and a bit of city driving. Gut feeling is telling me that the 2.0 will be kinder with MPG when I want to push on a bit(?). Ofcourse I should drive one, but awkward with it being a fleet buy, and without a proper drive on a run-in motor, not sure it would really help. Any help from those that know would be much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.

If you can afford the extra £30 per month, witrh the mileage you're doing I think the 2.0 will be worth it. If you like to get a move on, you will have to work the 1.6 harder to get reasonable performance, which will make it little if any less economical than the bigger engine.

Have you looked to see what the BIK costs of an Octavia 2.0 are? Same mechanicals.
