  • Ford Focus 1.6 2007. - Replacement for Focus. 23 Jun 2017 (Forum)
I did ask here a while ago about a used Beemer or even Merc, but realised in the end that I probably couldn't afford to run one, especially if it became troublesome. So I'm looking for something modest, around the seven/ seven and a half grand mark, not a diesel. Something with a decent ride, unlike the concrete suspension of this Focus, which is slowly turning the vertebrae of both my wife and I to mush.
  • Peugeot 307 2l hdi 2004 - Fuel gauge not registering refils 3 Mar 2017 (Forum)
I spotted it straight away and filled the tank with diesel. With such a low dilution of about 50:1 it hasn't appeared to have done any damage and  it runs just fine. However, and I expect this is just a coincidence, the fuel gauge is playing up. After completely refilling after the petrol went in, the gauge read just under full when it usually points to just over full.
  • Focus st170 - Tight steering and pulling side to side 23 Feb 2017 (Forum)
Hi all my name is jason I have recently become a proud owner of an 04 plate focus st . Mint condition for its age , but here is my problem lol Or paranoia. It cost me £600 it runs like a dream and is rapid but there is my problem, Why so cheap , ihavnt had it checked out yet only breezed over by a mechanic as I had to have new bulbs and the back wiper didn't work lol . I have never had a car with so much power but I just want to make sure it doesn't have me off the road.
  • Peugeot 308 - Tensioner/Alternator belt 4 Feb 2017 (Forum)
I immediately took it back to the Franchised garage I had just bought it from and who had fully serviced it prior to sale and their diagnostics revealed "P058D00 Battery voltage value invalid". From this information and running further tests the garage subsequently advised me : "Found movement in top tensioner - found very noisy; renewed alternator belt and tensioner as per TSB". Got the car back now and seems OK but what do I know as I'm not car engine savvy.
  • ford focus 1.8 zetec w reg - Cat gone? 29 Jan 2017 (Forum)
My focus has started to develop an eggy smell when the blowers are on full, more when the hot it on, or when its directed at the windscreen. After a while the smell goes and you can run the heater and it usually doesnt come back, if you turn it onto heat/windscreen again it comes back for a bit. Im told theres only 1 cat and its in the manifold. If I smell the exhaust back box I cant smell anything, I cant smell anything if I stick my nose by the scuttle panels near the engine except a normal slightly oily engine smell.
  • Used car advice - Budget 5K 30 Dec 2016 (Forum)
I plan to buy a used hatch or saloon with max budget of 5K. I am looking for something that is very cheap to run(Fuel efficiency/Tax/insurance/Maintenance). This is for my personal use for weekend trips and occasional city rides in the evening, I think on an average 10000 miles a year. I had real bad experience with my previous car from a dealer which was my first car so I get worried.
  • VED changes April 2017 23 Dec 2016 (Forum)
Given the changes to VED next April, is anyone contemplating buying a new car before then specifically to lock in the zero or low rate bands which will disappear for new cars? Am in 2 minds myself, as all my present cars are still going well and I usually run them into the ground, before buying new replacements to get max value. The Alhambra tdi is over 18 years old and costs an very unfair 235 a year in ved, I only do about 4k a year in it now, but really attached to it and would be a shame to scrap such a versatile and economical (50 mpg) vehicle for peanuts but the annual tax/mot/repairs/maintenance is more than  I spend on diesel!!
  • VW 1.2 Polo 54 plate 70,000 miles - Engine management light on 3 Nov 2016 (Forum)
I have had it plugged in and it has fault codes for mis Fire on cylinder, low battery drive and oxygen failure so fitted new battery I'm now fairly convinced it maybe the lambda sensor as the engine ticks and runs fine but the light stays on. Is it worth spending more money on a new sensor??? Thanks for reading all advice well received Geoff
  • Ford S-MAX - S-Max 2.0 Diesel or Petrol? 4 Sep 2016 (Forum)
Have done the math with my average 9.5-10k anual mileage + road tax and the petrol is coming in at around £600 more per year to run over the diesel. However this doesn't take into account the cost of a replacing the DPF should I go for the diesel.   Looking on eurocarparts, a "React DPF" (Product Code: 723590101) for S-MAX retails for £285, usual price £300.
  • Ford Fusion - Salvage recovery cost 17 Aug 2016 (Forum)
Sorry for rambling, want to give a full picture before my question. Got my dream run-around in January, 08 plate, only for it to be stolen in February. With no news after a month, I agreed to an insurance payout (price I paid less excess, fairplay Tesco). It has subsequently been found (was pulled over for another offence while sporting false number plates), and I have finally been offered the chance to buy it back at salvage bid cost.
  • Citroen C-Crosser - Winter driving in the Alps for first time 7 Jul 2016 (Forum)

Preparation:  apart from a good service, how should the car be prepared?
  • Peugeot 406 - Fuel problems 2.0 HDI 110bhp 7 Jun 2016 (Forum)
It started a few weeks ago were the car broke down, RAC identified it as being the in tank fuel pump failed.  I have installed a new pump and the car was running great again. However yesterday the car broke down again in similair circumstances. Lifted the back seat and exposed the top of the pump and it works fine, even removed the pipes to see fuel being pumped out seems to working fine.
  • Selling old SORNed car: should I tax & insure? 22 May 2016 (Forum)
I've got an old car on my drive that's been declared SORN.  It's about 15 years old, but runs fine and has MOT until September.  I think it's worth around £500 (it's a 2000 reg 3 litre Jaguar S-Type auto if that makes any difference). I want to sell it to reclaim the space on my drive.

  • Vauxhall Astra J 1.4 SRI Turbo - Help needed! Car warranty 27 Feb 2016 (Forum)
So I bought a 2010 plate Astra J in October (4 months ago) on finance from a car dealership. The car has been running without any problem until recently it underwent complete engine failure, without any prior indication of any problem. I mean, no warning lights etc. I had 3 months free warranty and then took out my own warranty just last week.

  • Ford Focus Ecoboost 2012 - Degas Hose recall 28 Jan 2016 (Forum)
Our local ford garage (whose aftercare is APPALLING), changed the hose, but since the car has run badly and is still leaking the coolant.  They appear to have literally changed the hose, and not looked at any issues the breakdown could have caused as a result. Can anyone advise WHEN the recall was first issued?
  • Tiguan - VW 1.4 TSI 160 - which oil 26 Jan 2016 (Forum)
Hi Posted at the weekend, about my Tiguan problems.  Taken into the dealer and prior to running the £170 diagnostics, they think it is the timing chain. I did notice that of the 3 services the same dealer did 2 used a "Workshop Castrol GTX" and the final one (Nov 15 - approx 1100 miles ago) used "Bulktank Shell Helix".
  • KIA Rio 2 1.2 manual 1 year and - 10,000 miles on 10 Dec 2015 (Forum)
A year later and happy with the car! It does what we ask it to, getting up close to 50ish mpg on long runs, dual carriageway and motorway, 40ish locally, so no complaints there. Selling Dealer Lookers were fine, but I declined all the "offered extras" which would have added £1400 to the price.
