  • Peugeot 1.9 Tdi 13 Oct 2003 (Forum)
I am after some advice on behalf of a mate - his head gasket has gone on his 1.9SDlt 306 sedan - M reg. I have looked at the oil and it seems ok, though there is evidence of coolant running down the block, it looks like it has come from the head gasket just behind the fuel pump/govenor thingy. Any advice on how much this will cost to replace, will it be throwing money away?
  • Xantia 1.8i Cooling 20 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Just a little problem I need to get around. Stupidly let some air into the cooling system of this car and since then have found that the coolant overheated and the fan would not come on. I refilled and think I have successfully expelled all the air out of the system, but the fan still shows no sign of cooperating. Where is the fan thermostat on the car?
  • Audi Radiator Leak 18 Jul 2003 (Forum)
The ccar is already booked into my local dealer for a different job on Thursday next week (24th). Can I simply keep topping up the coolant resevoir with tap water until it goes into the garage, or should I look at getting it fixed sooner? I have no idea where the leak is coming from, and I'm not technical enough to trace it.
  • Heater smell 20 May 2003 (Forum)
This maybe be nothing but when the heater is on the Hot setting and when the heater blower decides to work the Hot air smells like , well its hard to explain but... it smells like gone off water , this smell only happens when the heater is on the Hot setting it does not smell while on the cold setting . Any ideas why it smells ? Should the coolant be changed or something , it does not leak any water .
  • Radweld diagnostic test ? 6 Apr 2003 (Forum)
My 9 year old 2.0 mondeo is losing coolant gradually for some time now. I usually add a top up mix of 0.5l every few weeks. seems to lose after long crawling journeys. Garage replaced a rusting pipe under the radiator a few weeks ago but problem remains.
  • Vauxhall Astra Hatchback 1.6 8v 2004 - New car troubles 18 Jan 2019 (Forum)
Basically it reports the wrong temp, the cars running fine and I just fitted a new thermostat like a hour ago and it still runs reports cold however the heating is boiling, the engine has a tapping noise however I have been told it’s just noisy tappets and not to worry unless it’s actually affecting the car, I found mayo on the oil cap so I replaced the thermostat as many people say to do, the engine management light flashes when pushing the engine however the car isn’t running slow or even rough if anything the cars very nippy, no white smoke or power loss however the engine can run rough after giving it a bit of stress and it’s got bubbles going into the water tank however I’m quite sure it’s not losing any coolant and there’s no oil in the coolant. EDIT: I forgot to mention the car is my daily driver and it works well, apart from the issues mentioned above planning on keeping it for a few years if I get these issues straightened out.
  • Hyundai i30 - bought a used Hyundai 2009 having some problems 25 Sep 2017 (Forum)
I recently bought a used 2009 Hyundai i30 from a used car dealer. Having had the car for 2 weeks now I've noticed some problems. 1. The coolant in the reservoir is black however the coolant in the radiator is a pale orange colour. The car was supposed to be serviced prior to me collecting it but this wasn't mentioned. 2. The aircon blows luke warm air and it ac button is always on when I switch the car on even if I switch it off.
  • renault laguna1 2.2rxt - Laguna 2.2 dt overheating 28 May 2014 (Forum)
I have a strange problem with my 98 laguna 2.2dt, the car starts well, drives fine on the flat and has plenty of power when you put your foot down, the problem starts when I go to climb the mountain to my house, within about 500 yards the temperature shoots up and the overheat light comes on, the radiator fans kick in as they should but it's still not enough to lower the temperature, I end up having to pull over and wait until the temperature on the  gauge goes down to about halfway before I set off again, 500 yards later I have to stop again this goes on until I finally make it home after about 5 stops, there's a smell of hot coolant when I stop with a small whisp of what I assume is steam coming from the reservoir cap but no other obvious signs of leaks. I have a list of thing's to check including head gasket, EGR valve, turbo, waterpump and I also wonder if it might be an airlock after a coolant change, although it's an old car it's in good condition with lowish milage and is normaly problem free.
  • Renault Scenic (2003 - 2009) - 04 1.9dci Performance problems at start up 9 Nov 2012 (Forum)
Glow plugs have been replaced and redex has been added to a tank of diesel - still no avail. Can you help!! Also for note of interest, just before the fault developed, the engine coolant was low (above minimum) so I topped it up with coolant (undiluted as it air temperature was getting cold). Would this have any affect and allow the car to develop the symptoms as described above?
  • MG TF - Used car warranty - what are my rights? 16 May 2012 (Forum)
I bought an MG TF in August 2011 and for peace of mind opted for a £290 12 month used car warranty with The Warranty Co.  Recently, when checking the oil levels etc I noticed the coolant level had dropped considerably and there was sludge on the coolant cap.  With my little knowledge of cars I suspected there may be a problem with the cylinder head gasket.  I contacted the Warranty Company's recommended repairer (Halfords Autocentre) and booked my car in.
  • Rover 45 - Rover 45 Engine Failure 6 May 2012 (Forum)
Eventually got to the house and parked up and let car cool down.  I realised that one of the pipes that comes from the top of the coolant tank had become detached from the connector so reconnected that.  Added more oil and filled up coolant tank.   Engine started fine but after a few minutes could hear a hissing noise coming from the back right of the engine and steam/spray coming from there.
  • Rover 420GSi - Rover 420 - 'rough' running 15 May 2011 (Forum)
:-(   (This may not be relevant, but.... Recently a heater hose came adrift and I lost coolant. Garage drained and refilled, but didn't get rid of all the air-locks, so I've had to top-up a couple of times since then. However coolant levels seem OK now.)
  • VW golf gti - cutting out when warmed up, speedo jumping, 14 Oct 2010 (Forum)
also when i leave the car standing from start with the engine running, just when you would expect the coolant fan to kick in , the engine cuts out. i've been told it could be many things but dont want to fork out loadsa cash on the wrong parts heres a list of possible problems i have been told of; crank sensor, idle control valve, air lock in rad, coolant  temp sensor, hall sender, throttle body leak and an ecu relay???????????????
  • Peugeot 307 - Peugeot 307 head gasket 29 Mar 2010 (Forum)
My mum asked me to have a look at her car, as it keeps beeping and flashing a message about topping up coolant. Anyway, to cut a long story short, the coolant system is getting very pressurised, and pushing water out of the expansion bottle, setting off the sensor. Remove the top and water rushes back in (pressure is there even when it's been left for a couple of days!).
  • Peugeot 205 (1983 - 1997) - 86 1905 Puzzling Mi16 cold idle problem HELP! 6 Oct 2009 (Forum)
The problem seems to be the switching of the idle control valve. For some reason it isn't getting the right signal to turn on or off. Coolant sensor was changed and this did not affect anything apart from increase the fuel consumption so I've put the old one back in. Coolant sensor is getting 5V at the pins. Could it be this or maybe the tps, I'm not sure how to check this so if anyone has some advise on voltages or resistances I should be checking please contact me.
  • Rover 214 - head gasket failed?? 25 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Hi all! We have a P-reg Rover 214 (P) whose coolant tank has mysteriously run dry - no signs of any leaks and only topped up with water 2 weeks ago.........then whilst being driven last week emitted a nasty strong odour and started 'bubbling' under the bonnet.
  • Punto cooling/running problem 30 Nov 2006 (Forum)
I have a problem with our Punto 60S 1240cc 8 valve. 1998. It started on 3 cylinders one day last week and was blowing bubbles into its coolant. I tried a can of ?K Seal?, but no use, so off came the head. No 1 had a tiny groove in the head, only about 20thou wide & deep, but it bypassed the thick section of the head gasket. The local breaker supplied a replacement head complete with manifolds, sensors, ignition packs & camshaft.
  • service idea 10 Dec 2005 (Forum)
hi looking into starting my own servicing company and wondered wat you all thought of the idea, basically 3 service levels, 6 month, annual and 3 year and they go as follows 6 month, approx cost £40 plus any extra parts oil/filter change levels check tyres/pressures check coolant level check brake/discs check rad fan check spark plug/glow plug check annual service, approx cost £70 as 6 month service plus brake pads/shoes changed air filter changed fuel filter changed compression test valve clearences checked exhaust checked electrics/mot test items checked spark plugs/glow plugs changed 3 year service, approx cost £250-300 as annual service plus brake discs changed coolant change cambelt/tensioners changed fanbelt changed headgasket, head decoked waterpump changed gearbox oil changed bushes/rubbers mechanical components checked can anyone spot anything glaringly obvious i missed or have an opinion on the idea are the costs right or to expensive obviously things will differ car to car and the timings for services aren't fixed but ive always ran my cars by the above and they've been great and haven't ever suffered a major mechanical failure cheers chris
