I have a question Volume 23 9 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Tried a wireless transmitter from Maplin - snowy pic so tried a co-ax link but this too is very snowy and won't work with the remote controller eye gizmo at all. It's a long run of co-ax (40m) so I bought very low loss cable but so far it's a dead loss - any thoughts people? -
Diesel in 205 petrol engine. Won\'t start 3 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Drained the tank, filled with a bit of petrol, drained that, then put REDEX and petrol in the car and left running for 20-30 mins. It was a bit coughy for a while then seemed ok. Parked the car up at work and now it won\'t start - it\'ll turn over grand but that\'s it. What the fix now? It\'s a 1990 205. injectors/spark plugs/new car? -
Meguilar's - any observations 5 Nov 2003 (Forum)
This, the Gold version polish, sells in my local store for the equiv of £8.67 for about 300 ml vs good old-fashioned Turtle Wax which runs £2.47 equiv for the same amount. Both are US imported. The former claims to be the duck's guts but it's only wax after all and very expensive. I'm wondering whether I should treat my new car to it and if so what benefits can I expect, or just stick with the tried and true. -

"Each engine is hand-built by a single specialist who then signs his name to the carbon-fiber engine cover. Producing a maximum of 612 horsepower and 723 pound-feet of torque, the aluminum V12 generates nearly twice the power of a standard Porsche 911" My god! -
Peugeot 306 2.0D 28 Oct 2003 (Forum)
I'm looking for a used car under £7k to take me, the missus, bikes and junk up and down motorways at the weekend. It needs to be cheap to run, comfy on motorways, have ABS, Air Con and 5 doors. I've seen quite a few 306 2.0 Meridian's with about 35k - 45k on them at a Car Supermarket. Can anyone let me know if these diesel's are a bad/good buy? -
Sudden Battery Death 17 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Sudden Battery Death One Sat. morning my daughter's Scenic battery was "dead". It is well used for commuting and family run-about, and a recent holiday in Norway, and never an inkling of weakness. The battery, original 4 yr old FULMEN wouldn't take charge or deliver power. Kaput!! This isn't a friendly way to expire. -
Peugeot 306 Coolant loss 29 Sep 2003 (Forum)
I have heard that this problem could be caused by a sticking thermostat or head gasket failure. I am curious as to whether the thermostat does have a fault as the normal running temperature of the engine seems to be about 70ish and should probably be at about 90. If anybody can offer any help or similar experience i would be very grateful. -
Unusually High Co at Idle 26 Sep 2003 (Forum)
High speed measurements were 0.1 and only 6PPM Lambda 1.00 Spot on. Any ideas what may be causing this increase. Plugs are not due yet, Air Filter Clean and runs and ticks over perfectly. Thanks Peter -
VW Golf steering 15 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Mine wanders around on motorways, and the tyres (old-ish Continental eco-contacts on standard steel rims) squeal horrendously when cornering at even very moderate speeds. I've checked the pressures, and even tried running them a couple of pounds harder than recomended, but to no avail. Tracking seems to be OK, as tyres are wearing very evenly across the tread pattern, with no feathered edges, or high/low spots. -
Pug 306 Dturbo Noise 15 Sep 2003 (Forum)
It's hard to describe the sound but it sounds like a dry bearing (squeal with slight rattle?) and it dissappears once the engine is running for two minutes or more. It is definitely not the altenator belt. There is no smoke from teh engine when this is happening. The engine pulls like a train and is not burning oil. Any ideas? Thanks Martin -
New Land Cruiser (LC2 -LC5) 3 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Last 3 cars have been Land Rovers, but after reading various reviews on th LC, I fancied a change. Is anyone out there running one of these beasties? If so I would like to hear of any good or bad points. Just need to reconvince myself that I have made the right choice! Cheers Jim -
Measure of success 27 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Just had a wee peek into another (note I did not say rival)forum run by a popular weekly motoring publication,(no prizes for guessing what it is) after being invited to join in for some "petrol headed banter". Well, it's just as well I declined the offer because I think I may have ended up talking to myself judging by the number of posts!. -
Petrol stripping paint 12 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Yesterday morning she filled it with petrol and returned home and parked it on the drive. In the afternoon she smelt petrol around the car and noticed the petrol was running out of the filler cap and down the side of the car. The paint has stripped off in places and the rest is badly crazed. I am guessing the petrol expanded and forced its way out. Do we have any comeback with Mercedes UK? -
All weather bulbs 11 Aug 2003 (Forum)
I run two Renaults which both suffer from excessive scatter and glare from the front foglamps, particularly at night. I read that the so called "all weather bulbs" sold by several manufacturers emit a pale yellow light which is claimed to give less glare. -
Mercedes rain sensor wiper wont stop 1 Jul 2003 (Forum)
The windscreen was recently replaced by Autoglass due to stone crack. Even though the rain sensor has been connected up (and checked by Autoglass) the wipers run continually when put onto the intermittent (rain sensor) setting - even when dry! I have cleaned the windscreen but no joy. all Autoglass say is take it to a Mercedes main dealer. Any thoughts or help?? -
Volvo V70 Fan Problems. 15 Jun 2003 (Forum)
I own a T5 estate 2.3 2000 w reg. Yesterday the cooling fan would not stop running even when the ignition off, and it eventually drained the battery. The only way to stop it is to pull the plug apart. Does anybody know how to fix it without taking it to a expensive garage? Thanks. -
Buying Advice 22 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Hi I have to trade in my current car for something cheaper to run. I have £3,500 to spend. I do a 50 mile round trip every day to work so I need something that can cope with that. Also, would like 40mpg average, low insurance, reliability and less than 1.5 litres so I can get lower road tax. -
VW Polo engine stalling 27 Feb 2003 (Forum)
After being setup by a VW mechanic (not at VW garage), the engine was allowed to 'settle down' for about a week. During this week the engine tends to run at higher idling speeds than should be. A few days after the repair, the engine settled to correct idling speed. -
Ugly cars 31 Dec 2002 (Forum)
A couple of examples of how not to design a new car: New Vectra - I can only compare its back end to the human equivalent of a 20 stone woman in jogging bottoms, and what the hell is that chrome strip low on the tailgate all about? Nissan Primera - I like my creases to run down the middle of trousers, not the middle of the entire length of my car! I await for the owners of these vehicles to spring to their defence, please understand I am only giving my own personal opinion! -
High Speed Trains 16 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Politicians are always telling us that 'SPEED KILLS' are they not? After all what if a child were to run out in front of this train... Perhaps a politician would now care to acknowledge exactly when 'speed kills' Hypocrisy strikes again.
