  • Vigilantes 26 Aug 2004 (Forum)
This was raised in a radio programme when someone, claiming to be an off-duty policeman, was advocating that the public should report all traffic offences they witness to the police. He argued that most of us would not hesitate to report a serious offence like a hit and run driver; so why not lesser offences? Well few of us would condemn the father with the video camera, perhaps we are less convinced about the speed gun toting villagers. Parking offences?? Nah So where do we draw the line?
  • Madness or sanity? 8 Aug 2004 (Forum)
I'm thinking of getting rid of my current car, Impreza Turbo as it isn't fast enough or fun enough to justify it's high running costs. As I see it I have 2 paths open to me 1. Buy a high output VAG group diesel- either a Skoda VRS, Seat Ibiza TDi 'Sport' or a MKIV Golf GTDI 150, all around the 12K mark. 2.Buy a Porsche 944 Turbo for around 10K, leave myself 2K for any repairs that need doing.
  • Ford 1.8TD Engine 21 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Ford Escort 1.8TD LX on a 99 T Peugeot 406 HDI 110 on a 99 T. The Pug would probably cost most to run, and I can get the Escort for about £2,000 so that makes it the cheapest of the bunch, the Mondeo is the most expensive at £3K, but it comes taxed and tested. Anyway, as I know that I'm leaning towards Ford's offerings I thought I would check with the regulars what maintenence is required and at what intervals.
  • Audi TDI 110 Decline 9 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I run a 97 A4 1.9 TDi SE 110.I purchased the car approx 3 years ago,its mileage was 96k.Its given sterling service with plenty of poke and superb economy since. However in the past few weeks I have noticed the car to be well down on power and torque to what it once was.The mileage is now 165k and since I have owned the car it has had 5k synthetic oil changes and doesn`t use any oil to this date.It also has regular air filter replacement the last one just days ago.It has had regular use of diesel power plus fuel addative and regular italian tune ups. There does however seem to be the beginnings of an oil leak at the front of the engine in the area of the camshaft end/rocker cover and the car has become a bit smokey of late. The question is what could be the cause of the recent decline in performance?
  • V8 Discovery LPG conversion 29 May 2004 (Forum)
and the pipework from the filler fixed in the area of the fuel filter so as to effectively prevent the filter from being changed without removing the pipework. The wiring was ghastly with long unsupported runs. All this for £1300, customer off to trading standards! Anyone else had similar problems? Andrew -- Simplicate and add lightness!!
  • 99 Vectra CDX CCU 20 May 2004 (Forum)
Wonder if anyone can help? SWMBO runs a '99 Vectra CDX with all the bells and whistles including climate control. A few weeks back she told me that the display in the centre, which gives the fan speed etc was no longer working but the CCU was working fine so I haven't worried too much.
  • Oil Warning Light - Ford Mondeo 13 Apr 2004 (Forum)
After about half an hour I re-checked the oil level and it was still way above the full mark. I understand that overfilling can be as bad as running underfilled but surely a main dealer would not send a car out like that? Would overfilling cause the light to come on? If so why would it take 3 days to do so? Any info. would be greatly appreciated before I take the car back to the dealer tomorrow.
  • Vx Corsa alternator volts 9 Mar 2004 (Forum)
When checking the charging circuit operation I found the following: If I connect a voltmeter to the battery and then start the engine, the running no load voltage is 13.2 volts. After about 2 minutes (I haven't timed this exactly) the voltage jumps suddenly to 14.0 volts. This isn't a fluke; I first thought maybe I had a dodgy connection, but I have repeated the test 4 times with the same result each time.
  • Diesel filter priming - Mk4 Golf. 7 Mar 2004 (Forum)
There is no manually operated pump to prime the fuel system - or if there is I cant locate it..... It also states in the handbook that if you run out of fuel, it may take the engine longer than normal to start - it specifies up to one minute - as the system must be freed of air. This would indicate that the system will prime itself somehow??
  • dumped car? 12 Feb 2004 (Forum)
For our block, we have one parking space (although all flats have garages en bloc round the back), running lengthways beside the path up to the main door. The space is big enough for two small cars, if parked well, but usually accommodates just one. I came home last week, and a car I didn't recognise was parked in the space, backed right to the end (so that another car could squeeze in).
  • Tax renewal and Ins certificate 27 Jan 2004 (Forum)
You can do it online and get instant cover the night before if you so wish, but with these new rules of an £80 fine on the day your current tax disc runs out, you will get fined! So you either have your next years policy ready, with the certificate/cover note at your disposal or you pay £80 fine!
  • Tale of Caution / Stupidity 12 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Taking great care to keep the heater away from the back seats and panels I switched on and left it running in the garage. It did the job, but it has also melted the plastic things that the rear seat belts plug into. Leoness carrys back seat passengers to work every day so I need to get this sorted pronto.
  • Privately Funded Motorways 5 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I am no economist but on an investment of £900M an income of £25M does not make it a viable commercial proposition. I have no idea what it costs to run and maintain the road out of that revenue but it must be considerable. I believe however that after the first 10M vehicles have used the road the £1 discount goes and cars will be charged £3. - that should be in about 9 months time.
  • VW Scirocco hates the cold 13 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Until the next time I take her out... I tried putting a sheet of tin foil in front of the rad last winter to raise the running temperature and this seemed ok, but the spring arrived and I was never convinced that it had done the trick. I am now faced with two choices: get shot of the car or move to Spain... Any advice much appreciated!!
  • 306DT no hot air 7 Dec 2003 (Forum)
I have disconnected the matrix from under the bonnet and put a hose pipe in one end and watched it flow out the other. I know the car runs about 80°C which is low, but the thermostat works and even if I block the rad until she's at 90° and the fans cut in, she still refuses to produce hot air. The in and out of the matrix are hot (too hot to hold) Has anyone got any ideas?
  • Help in identifying Postman Pat\'s van 6 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Best described as looking like Postman Pat\'s van, very upright and boxlike at the rear (absolutely vertical rear doors) with prominent wheelarches and, most puzzlingly, what appeared to be a tube/rollbar running from the front bumper, along the top edge of the wing and up the A pillar. Wasn\'t able to discern whether the bar continued across the top of the screen. The bonnet was short, rather low and had a pronounced curve, almost like that of a 2CV but starting lower down.
  • Car door 'break-off' hinges 30 Nov 2003 (Forum)
I asked him if he stopped to complain, but he replied that he just carried on as he was late for school. Surprise for someone! I expect that it was another pupil, also late, ducking out to run the last hundred yards. Are car door hinges so weak? Once upon a time the A pillar used to corrode badly, but nowadays? Is there some safety feature?
  • HMC&E - An out of control private army?? 21 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Would be interested to hear about your experiences. Was "done" this time last year for having red diesel in the running tank of my car. I paid 70p per litre for what I believed should have been clear diesel. This was bought from a reputable supplier (well I thought they were reputable up to that point)who provided a receipt which I offered as evidence to customs.
  • XUD 9 cylinder Head Gasket 16 Nov 2003 (Forum)

  • Damp Weather and Merc 230 (1990) 15 Oct 2003 (Forum)
If left for a week and the weather has been bad it will not start at all. Otherwise if left for a couple of days it runs on 2-3 cylinders with much coughing and burping until warmed up. I have had to in the past bring in the HT leads and dry and warm them on the radiator (after which the car ran fine). Needless to say they were replaced, but the problem can still persist at times.
