Now the salt lays round about deep & crisp & even 3 Nov 2008 (Forum)
The white glare can be seen in the pale early winter light from outer space and orbiting satellites look down on a sheen radiating out from the epicentres, along the roads - fading over hundreds of meters, like the trail of sun scorched sea cucumbers.. Now at a drive in, out of town shopping centre near you..... Remember the `good old days` of forty years or so ago. The yellow flash of Council gritters? Vast fleets on the road - salt scattered in bulk at speed - as though bombing the continent a couple of decades earlier. -
Toyota Avensis (2003 - 2008) - Diesel fuel economy - what's happening? 8 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I've averaged about 35 mpg in my diesel Avensis over the last 3,500 miles (6,500 to 10,000). I thought it must be my style of driving - heavyish right foot - and so I tried to baby it along: gentle acceleration, smooth driving, hardly any above 70 mph. Result: 43 mpg, brim-to-brim. Which is crepe. So I filled up with Shell V-Power. -
Mercedes Benz E-Class W210 (1995 - 2002) - 1997 2.0 gearbox trouble 25 Aug 2008 (Forum)
My 1997 Merc E200's gearbox (four speed) is doing some funny stuff! In the mornings if I drive off from home she will hold 1st gear and thump into 2nd and sometimes from 2nd to 3rd too. So, I usually idle in D1 for 10-15 mins and shift to D and drive off and 99% of the time she will shift smoothly. -
FIAT Stilo (2002 - 2007) - Buying Stilo diesel - what shall I look out for??? 18 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Hi Guys, I currently drive a MK1 Clio and fancy a change to something more up to date and good looking, economical. I typically drive 2-3 times a week within London outside of peak hours. I like the look of a Stilo and am drawn to a diesel (for the better mileage). -
Peugeot 206 SW (2002 - 2006) - Most efficient/economical driving style 24 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Recently I sold my Renault Megane 1.9dti (2000 model) which had done 85k of pretty reliable motoring. In the last two years (after 2 speeding convictions)... -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - Downsizing - only slightly - but what to? 4 Jun 2008 (Forum)
My immediate thought was 'Jazz'. He's not sold on the idea, though... (nor is my Mother, who despite not driving seems to think that Japanese cars are 'expensive to maintain') Mind you, this is the gent who once decided he was buying a Fusion, until he sat in the thing. He's 6ft3 and not small, so he needs a car with enough space to fit him and everything else in. -
Parking in street outside someone elses house 28 May 2008 (Forum)
What are peoples views on parking in a residential road outside of someone elses house? I'm not talking terraces without drives, but a road of mostly detached houses with drives for at least 2-3 cars each. I currently have a white van parked on the pavement outside of my house that belongs to a builder who lives diagonally opposite (the van isn't outside or opposite his house). -
Free car.Yay or nay 8 May 2008 (Forum)
Coming to the point, can anyone see any pitfalls re insuring it or anything else? Three of us currently drive older cars e.g. 01 reg and one has a 56 plate. Do you think it is a financialy worth it as we are thinking of agreeing as it will save our cars wear and tear etc. Thanks -
Alfa Romeo - Alfa Romeo..... Am I Brave Enough? 4 May 2008 (Forum)
How is it holding up? Any other cars you might recommend? Ultimately, I want something that is comfortable and fun to drive. If it is economic as well - thats a huge bonus, but not the be all end all :) -
Lots of smoke (no, more than that!) 14 Mar 2008 (Forum)
So I'm driving along a dual carriageway last night with all the wind and rain when I get a strong smell of smoke in my nostrils, turns out it's a car travelling slowly (approx 30 mph) about a hundred metres ahead. -
What do I replace the Honda with . . . . . . 2 Feb 2008 (Forum)
The Honda is due for replacement at the beginning of March next year (4 months) so am about to start test drives. Like for like swop would be 24k list and would mean buying up on the lease again, I want to save this money and put it into the retirement fund so this is out. Children have both left home in the last 6 months. -
Speed 15 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Even the best driver, using all his/her skills, experience & judgement can be caught out by someone elses mistakes/stupidity. It could be safe to drive at the maximum speed limit on a certain road one day and then madness to do so in thick fog the next. Experience, responsibility and a sense of mortality helps most of us to stay alive by deciding what is safe or not. -
Peugeot 106 (1991 - 2002) - 1995 1.5 Diesel engine problems - tud5 14 Jan 2008 (Forum)
While idling on my drive the engine cut out again and now won't restart. There was no abnormal noises/smoke/ect noticeable other than what I've already mentioned. I replaced the stop solonoid about 50 miles ago, but I'm not sure if a fault with that could cause these symptoms. -
Fun bargain car advice! 11 Jan 2008 (Forum)
This limits things to an estate or hatchback, nothing much smaller than the Golf. It has to be fun to drive - I'm not bothered about silly power or speed, but something I can chuck round corners would be good. Economy is of less note as I don't do *that* many miles, but I am quite aware of the silly price of petrol. -
Mercedes Benz C-Class W203 (2000 - 2007) - Mercedes C-class 'rattly' suspension 30 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Could pattern parts (if they use them) be slighlty diffrerent size/quality etc, so be causing this? TIA for any suggestions... It's driving me crazy! -
That's one less thanks to me. 8 Dec 2007 (Forum)
Although I am pleased they have not contacted me since as a witness to the manner of his driving I was surprised they did not, or is it sufficient evidence just to rely on the blood alcohol results. Any way I am pleased to have been instrumental in removing one more drink driver from the roads. -
Motorway drivers 13 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Drove down Saturday night from Manchester at about 7:30pm and had a lovely journey, with the cruise control set on about 74mph. It was a very relaxing drive, with almost no need to touch brake pedal or even accelerator, until I got to Luton for the contraflow. Then I came upon idiocy of the highest order, with people switching lanes, getting up your backside, speeding up and slowing down unnecessarily. -
A close shave this morning and a salutary warning 6 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Just to say I managed to pull off a bit of dreadful driving this morning on the way to work :-( My route entails joining a fairly busy A road by turning right from a T-junction. Sometimes, traffic from the left is very slow-moving, whilst that from the right is free-flowing. -

Audi A4 Avant: Help Needed to Determine Value 24 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Hi All, I need some advice in trying to value my Audi A4 Avant 2.5TDi 2002 SE 155bhp. (51 plate). I recently bought it but made the school boy error of buying it without SWMBO test driving it. This has now come back to haunt me as SWMBO doesn't like the driving position or the clutch - too heavy for her and hurts her calf. The problem is this. I bought the car for what I believe was a very good price and there is nothing wrong with it (I love it) but I am resigned to selling it in order for a quiet existence on the domestic front.
