• BMW 3 series vs 5 series running costs 2006 -2008 21 Mar 2013 (Forum)
  Hi Guys I was looking to get either a 3 series or 5 series (preferable) and wanted some advice, what are the average annual running costs for the above cars in terms of servicing and likely faults/breakdowns, I've had a reliable (but slightly boring!) car for 4 years which has never gone wrong and annual servicing is only £150 on it.

  It's now back in the UK and my garage are trying to find the fault, the injectors are ok the fuel line clean, high pressure pump very slightly low on pressure but not by much. When started from cold it runs evenly but when it warms up it runs rough with no.1 cylinder not firing, which is furthest from the H/P pump. Interestingly, the deisel they removed smells of paint thinners, any ideas?

  My Honda Concerto 1.5i  74,000m 1991 started running roughly about two days ago. Air conditions were dry. It has worsened today and won't start. It has been running perfectly for the last two years. It feels like an ignition problem as it cuts out  and misses a beat suddenly.

  I have had the car for 5 weeks, and I am experiencing the overcooling problem, (made worse over the last few days of icy weather)  Took it for a 50 mile run at the weekend, non stop, and the temp gauge only reached 1/4 scale. Today, after driving nearly 6 miles, the temp gauge had hardly moved off the peg! so my intention was to replace the 'oil cooler thermostat' and the standard thermostat at the same time.

• Vauxhall Vectra B (1995 - 1999) - 99 2.5 Car running like stink 24 Jan 2010 (Forum)
  I have a Vauxhall vectra (B) on a T plate 2.5 V6 SRi and it's been a great car for 10 years with only a few minor hiccups, However, I had the cambelt and waterpump replaced before Xmas and when I picked it up it ran really well. After leaving it over the Xmas period, it runs like stink and its missing on cylinders 1 and 4, all leads and plugs have been changed and the coil pack has also been replaced to no avail, I've now been told by the garage that I use, that its possibly the ECU.

  Any suggestions on tests he can run? Will a new computer module help fix the problem. We are stumped and will have to sell the car for parts if we can get a solution. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  On arrival, you always checked for fuel and sparks first, which I did. Both present, and the van would run, but not well. I managed to get it running better by retarding the ignition, but it was still not right. Towed it back to the garage, and the job was solved after a lot of head scratching by people far more expert than me.
• Toyota Starlet (1990 - 1996) - Accidentally put diesel in, advice please 13 Dec 2008 (Forum)
  On the advice of a couple of motorists at the pumps I added some unleaded petrol (11 litres) to 'dilute' the diesel. The car now runs rather badly, needs lots of choke and throttle in a low gear, smokes, wants to stall etc. What shall I do? My local garage advised running it until nearly empty, then filling with unleaded. They advised against constantly topping up with unleaded as this would cause the diesel to stay in.

  My Lanos has some strange symptoms to me so I am looking for someone that could shed some light on the situation for me please. Every now and then, when I go to start the car it will start running as though the timing is out. But once turned off then given some time, when I start it again it runs smooth as. I have checked plugs, leads, injectors, fuel filter. the timing is spot on as I have double checked that too.

  When the engine is cold its ok ,But when it gets to normal running temp. I get a howling noise from the sump'. So i put on a oil pressure gauge. when the engine is cold the oil pressure is fine, But when it gets to normal running temp. The oil pressure starts to go up as normal, Then it gets stuck at 17000 rpm.Then when the rev's get to 1900 to 2000 rpm.

  The defroster switch in contact with the evaporator radiator reads 9.6k ohms at ambient and 12.76k after running the air for 10 mins.

  It will do it consitantly evan in neutral. The car is standard apart from a stainless exhaust. He has run out of ideas (and fast running out of cash!) but does have another mate with a Ti who he can swap most bits with to eliminate them as the cause. Any ideas?
• Traffic Congestion & the School Run 13 Mar 2008 (Forum)
  It is evident from school holidays the major source of congestion on our roads is caused by the School run. Everyone knows about it but they are too Selfish and Lazy to do anything about it. Just think the money you would save by having one car in the household? 'Drive your kids, kill your kids!' - hard hitting but it is the truth!
• My 1997 Petrol Combo won't keep running 3 Jul 2007 (Forum)
  Hi there, My 1997 Petrol Combo (same as astra 1.4L) will start but will only keep running for about ten minutes then it stalls and won't start again for an hour or so. I've changed the coil and regulator but it's still the same, It's really annoying because i don't want to risk breaking down miles away from home.

  Hi I have a 98 Passat V6 Syncro and it has a strange random starting issue? The car runs great with no issues or fault codes stored etc but every now and again when I come to start it it fires OK but then cuts out and struggles to start i.e. turns over very slowly and queitly (Like a flat Battery but this is not the case) and to start it I will need to hold the throttle to the floor and keep turning it over until it fires, may take 2-3 attempts as soon as it has started it runs very rougth but when settled down runs great again with no issues???

  I have a 2000 Mercedes Sprinter 311 cdi van. 270000 miles. Runs extremely well but is losing water about one litre per 100 miles. I have checked for external leaks, for telltale marks around hose joints, radiator, heater matrix and water pump, nothing, I have had the system pressurised to 21 lb, about three times normal and run the engine for about ten minutes at about 2700 rpm with no fluctuation in pressure evident and no external obvoius leaks being forced.

  My local (non-MG) garage fitted a new radiator which works fine but they have pointed out that the secondary fan is running constantly. Their electrician has sent the ECU away for testing (come back OK) and suggests that the VVC unit is causing a "spike" which is interfering with the electrical circuits and causing the fan to remain on all the time.

  We run two Mondeo TDCI 130ps Ghia estates doing long run airport transfers.One is a Ghia the other a Ghia X.The guy running the Ghia X is suffering with back pains since having this car and has been advised by his doctor that it is caused by the new car change hard ride.
• Xantia 1.8 Petrol idling erratically 4 Jan 2006 (Forum)
  I found some petrol in my garage, which I thought was unleaded and put this in. I also put another 5 lites in the following morning. Since then it has been running like a pig. I am wondering whether I should have left this petrol in my garage well alone as I couldn't be absolutely sure of it origin. I cleaned the plugs and put another 4 or 5 litres of unleaded in and it does run better, but still not as well as it did.
