BMW 520d SE auto tiptronic 2007 - 520d auto tiptronic juddering - philipjohn1103diy

I have just purchased a 520d SE automatic tiptronic, 2007 June with 32K on the clock the car has been fully serviced at BMW and has an enhanced service package running for 5 years.

When I run up to a stop say at traffic lights and leave it in "drive" there is a movement from side to side as if the engine is missing or somebody is pushing the car from side to side, it virtually stops if I put it in "Neutral".

Funny I have just got rid of a 320d SE auto tiptronic, exactly the same engine and auto box, 2007 with 25K on the clock and this just started doing the same thing but nothing like as pronounced.

I was wondering if you had any ideas or heard about this on other cars, other than that the car runs like a dream

Hello,I would put the car in neutral when stopping at traffic lights on a automatic.I always did on my auto Honda Jazz CVT.If leaving in drive the car tended to creep forward.Unless a tiptronic box works different.

Hi Phil here, after I have had my car to BMW, they checked out the diagnostic computer profile and found that a heater plug/glow plug in the engine was down causing a misfire on low revs, hence the movement of the car was the engine misfiring. So I have booked it in for a replacement to be fitted and will confirm the outcome after next wednesday.

although the movement has reduced with the fitting of the glow plug, it has not eliminated the juddering when holding in drive when stopped.

Not at all, I have had it to an auto gearbox specialist and they have test driven it and confirmed that the gearbox is working perfectly and they think it is an engine misfire at low revs. The problem is if I take it back to BMW they seem to be clueless if the on-board computer does not tell them the problem, they cannot diagnose an unrecorded problem and at £102/hour that is not an option.

Are you sure its not one of the many engine and gearbox mounting rubbers thats not at faulty hard to see but could well be worth a look.When your sure its an engine misfire then check out all the plugs ,coils and leads these have a habit of causing problems also put your problem on one of the BMW forums.

I have a similar problem. I have taken it to BMW they had it for 3 weeks and they changed the glow plugs and injectors but that did not resolve it. They said they checked all filteres , fuel preesure, did a compression test etc and all seems fine. They think it may be carbon buidlup in the engine. I may take it back in a few weeks..

To see if it is the same problem as mine let me know if the following applies to you:

1. the judder is less in neutral than drive

2. You can see the rev indicators shake a little when juddering

3. When you put the air con on while it judders the judder reduces or goes away.

4. it is fine in all other cases.

I have a Sept 2007 520d M Sport with 35k miles and it is also showing the same symptons as described above. It happens when the engine is both cold and hot. Worst case seems to be in cruise control at about 2,000rpm but also sat in D at the lights. I keep looking round to see who is rocking my car sometimes!

I have asked the local auto bavaria for their opinion but haven't received anything back as yet. Local BMW did the same as someone else mentioned - plugged it in to the computer which showed no fault so that was the end of it for them.

Have had couple of these late diesel bmw's doing this and injector/injectors have proved to be the fault and rectified it once replaced. First point would be to get diagnostic computer check done to see if brings up any misfire fault and also check the leak back of each injector and see if show's up anything.
