  And a filthy 78,000 mile 96P Golf VR6 smelling of steam and head gasket problems sold for £5,950. On to the more sober stuff and the first Citroen C5 I've seen at auction was a 13,000 mile 2001Y LX HDI 110 in silver. It sold for £9,850. The Golf V5 estate is a car I've never seen before in the UK, never mind at auction. It's so rare it isn’t even booked and I was asked to price one, but couldn't, just last week.

  New KIA Shuma II, from just £8,995 25 Feb 2002 (News)
  KIA has relaunched its Shuma 5-door hatchback as the new look Shuma II with a new interior and with prices from just £8,995 (the same as Citroen's current price for the Xsara 1.4LX with a/c). The size of the cars is similar to that of the Mitsubishi Carisma, Skoda Octavia and old Vauxhall Vectra, so it's longer than a Focus, but smaller than a Mondeo.

  To my mind, bargains of the day were a repossessed but very smart 26,000 mile 98S Jaguar XJR8 Supercharged which sold for £23,500; and four 10,000 mile 2000V Citroen Xantia 1.8iLXs which sold for between £5,200 and £5,275.   A trio of 99Vs with 15,000 to 19,000 miles sold for between £9,800 and £10,100. The other way to buy seven seats on the day was to go for a 99V Citroen Synergie 1.9TD SX, two of which with 15,000 and 28,000 miles sold for £10,900 and £11,850. If you were after a sports car you could have gone for a repossessed 26,000 mile 97R Toyota MR2 2.0 litre which bid to £8,975; a 63,000 mile repo 96P BMW M3 Evo which bid to £15,450; an unwarranted 21,000 mile repo 96N Porsche 993 3.6 Carrera 4 which bid to £33,900; or an unwarranted 33,000 mile repo 96N Lotus Esprit 2.2 S4S which sold for £17,700.

  A 10k mile 2010/60 reg ST3 in white with black wheels sold for £14,900. Some oddballs were also big money. A rare 36k mile 2008/58 Citroen C3 1.6HDI 110 Exclusive sold for £6,000. And even a 17k mile 2009/59 Nissan Pixo (that were selling for £5,999 new not so long ago) made £4,200. So if you’re out in the used car market buying and finding cars expensive, it isn’t because the trade is trying to rip you off.

  SAABs, though, looked better value, particularly SAAB convertibles. There were some cheap Zafiras. Citroen Xsara Picassos bid consistently in different sections in different halls, looking very good value 3 year old family cars. The thing is, you can still do better at auction than you can at a dealer because you’ll be buying your car where the dealers buy theirs.
