  • Joining the motorway 7 Sep 2002 (Forum)
I find that rapidly decelerating from 70 mph to 30 mph puts me at risk of a rear end shunt by an exhaust sniffer. Seems the more I drive the more I take into account the stupid things others might do.
  • Running In 7 Jul 2002 (Forum)
I am picking up my new Citroen C5 2.0HDi Estate on the 16th June 6 days later i am setting off to mid spain a journey of some 1500 miles and all motorway driving. Can anybody tell me if I will have to do any specific running in of the engine before I set off or are new cars run in suffiently these days to be able to undertake journeys of this nature straight away.
  • Dead Golf 14 Apr 2002 (Forum)
Some advice, please? SWMBO's VW Golf (1986, 1300C Mk2 petrol, 100,000 miles) has lain on our drive since the head gasket went a year ago. We've owned it since new, no rust (no surprise with a VW), but it's not the most desirable of Golf variants. As they are supposed to be ideal bangers to run, do you think it would be worth something to somebody, or is it just a scrapper?
  • Golf PD 150 - why? 27 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Lots of middleweights handle better and have more space. If you must have a Golf then the 1.8T and V5 are much nicer to drive. Just don't see the point.
  • yellow school buses 18 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Great idea, but the other part of the US scheme doesn't seem ever to be mentioned and it's an important part. When a US school bus stops, traffic in both directions must stop as well - no vehice must drive past the bus. Can our drivers cope with that?
  • Bad knee 15 Mar 2002 (Forum)
I've got a friend, early twenties, who has had his right knee replaced with a prosthesis because of bone cancer. He wants to drive again. He's about six feet tall and can't bend his right leg more than about 90 degrees at the moment although this may get better. Any advice on what car might be suitable. He found a three door Focus quite comfortable to sit in and get in and out of.
  • 12 months for etc 10 Mar 2002 (Forum)
I knew this fellow had been done for Dangerous Driving (and quite indefensible) what got me was the irony of being caught by his own camera, seeing as we spend most of our time avoiding HMG's cameras. A large poster advertising some Toyota or other has popped up in town recently, pictured is the aforementioned Toyota (can't remeber the model) parked by a Gatso being photographed, wonderful ironic advertising I thought.
  • Vauxhall Ecotec 19 Feb 2002 (Forum)
I've tried a known good sensor but that doesn't help. Has anybody out there come across this? It's driving me mad!
  • Xantia air-con/heater 1 Feb 2002 (Forum)
My 4+ year old 2.1TD has covered 25,000 miles, and is usually driven with the air-con "on" and the temperature set at 22 degrees. After about 10 miles of driving, the warm air flow turns cold and stays cold, unless the lever is moved to the "red". My Citroen dealer has looked at it twice and can find nothing wrong, implying I don't know how to use it. Any ideas please?
  • Police Camera Action 9 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Good to see the return of this programme to ITV tonight. Almost as funny as the comedy driving of some motorists is the way the prog tries to pass itself off as a serious lesson in road safety! But did anyone else think Alastair Stewart was a bit out of order to gloat at the Pug 205 that skidded and crashed after the driver panicked at the sight of a speed trap?
  • Bumper Stickers - again ! 21 Dec 2001 (Forum)
I really have no idea why this bumper sticker says what it says, but it still amused me. On the back of a large pick-up, just beneath the gun rack, driving along Ipanema beach last night....... "Someone who likes small cars is a female dentist". (quem gosta de carros pequenos é um dentista) If anybody has any idea why this would be so, I'd be interested.

  • Motoring TV tonight. 4 Oct 2001 (Forum)
Tucked away in the schedules on Channel 4 at 9-10pm tonight is a programe "To drive for" (don't suppose it'll have Nicole Kidman). It is billed as a celebration of 50yrs (why 50yrs??) of motoring with early clips from the start of popular motoring. If any good it ought to cover the formative period many of us here go back to (codgers all).
  • Perfect Paul 24 Sep 2001 (Forum)
How do you guys react to perfectionist Paul, who writes a column in the DT Motoring supp every week? I maintain that it is humanly impossible to concentrate absolutely 100% on driving for more than a few miles, even if there are no passengers to distract one. When I was a high mileage man I occasionally found that I had reached a certain point on a long journey without the slightest recollection of how I'd got there.
  • speeding tickets 17 Sep 2001 (Forum)
I was driving along this morning, doing the 30mph spped limit, when i noticed a copper, hiding in a bush with a speed camera. Is this legal? i myself obviously didnt get a ticket, but i would imagine the bloke doing about 50 in his M3 the other way prob did, i am not condoning speeding, but is it right for them to hide?
  • Aircon and fuel consumption 27 Aug 2001 (Forum)
I've recently been running with the aircon permanently on, and the following are the results of brim-to-brim tests under the same driving condiditons (approximately 1200 miles in each test, 2 fills). Aircon OFF: 49.73 mpg (July 2001) Aircon ON: 49.83 mpg (August 2001) The car is a Xantia HDi (110) My conclusion: do as HJ advises and leave it permanently switched on.
  • Used Saab 9-3 25 Aug 2001 (Forum)
Is this a good vehicle - I'm looking for something solid, comfortable and safe - good on the motorway and ok to drive in town. I've looked at the car-by-car breakdown - just wondering if anybody has good/bad experiences of these. It's not from a Saab dealer - can I get a Saab warranty for this? thanks

  • Civic vs Leon 3 Aug 2001 (Forum)
I'm in the market for a new car. Primary requirements are:- -Build Quality/Durability -Economy -Purchase Price -Must be nice to drive I've narrowed my search down to a Honda Civic 1.6SE Exec and a Seat Leon 110TDi SE. I can get the Leon with leather etc. as an import for about £12500. I've seen the Civic for about £13000. Any comments on which is best?
  • Rear Seat Belts 1 Jun 2001 (Forum)
Study of the endless and boring coverage of the election shows our leaders leaping out of cars without unfastening any visible seat belt and driving away without putting them on. Any easy target for Plod one would have thought but probably a career threatening move for one who tried it!
