  • MINI Hatch 1.6 First 3dr - Garage repair issues on Mini- advice appreciated. 8 Oct 2017 (Forum)
She has had her thermostat housing replaced twice and she still has the same issues. So, she's taken the car into Mini and paid £100 for a check to be run on the car- it's come back saying she needs a new thermostat housing!  This is the response Mini sent her: Unfortunately we aren’t able to go further with our investigation until we have cleared the fault for the thermostat housing.
  • Will need a 'station car' car soon... 15 Mar 2017 (Forum)
but it must also be capabable of long journeys every so often (1 per month). Let's paint the picture. I am a private owner and currently run a 3L Petrol Jaguar XF. It is Quite a Fine Motor Car and I do about 10k/year. From next year, my office will be moved to a city centre location, so rather than driving the Jaaaag to the office I will be going in on train.
  • DPF Filters - Just how bad are they? 14 Feb 2017 (Forum)
Providing I know what I would need to do in order to keep a DPF 'happy' then so long as it doesn't involve doing anything ridiculous like belting up the M1 in second gear for 50 miles every week then I might reconsider my options. Any advice would be very welcome before I take the plunge into running an expensive petrol engine.
  • VW - VW Emissions Scandal 30 Sep 2016 (Forum)
VW and UK and European transport ministries have said from the start that the software 'cheat' only kicked in during the USA test and did not affect normal running or the European/UK test. If the car passes the test without the software kicking in, then surely it is legal in the UK and doesn't need the fix? If the software was only applied during the USA test, then the 'fix' should have no effect at all on normal running.
  • Daewoo Matiz - Check engine light puzzle 12 Sep 2016 (Forum)
Then I cleared the check engine light an sat on the drive with the engine running while listening carefully, and watched the live data feed telling me the temperature of the engine. I could hear the low-speed fan switching on and off periodically. It comes on at about 93 degrees C and switches off again at about 88 degrees C.

  • Fiat Qubo 1.3 Multijet 95 Trekking - Engine management warning light 24 Jan 2015 (Forum)
In December I traded the Qubo in against a 62K Lexus IS250 Sport and a 02 Reg Micra for my wife which has really low mileage. Whilst the costs of running both are a good bit more than the Qubo, the peace of mind is blissful!
  • Ford Fiesta (2000 - 2002) - 00 1.3 Car Won't Start 11 Jan 2015 (Forum)
(I guess its possible that the cooling fan has been coming on straight away for a while and I've just not noticed) When the car does start, it runs fine. I'm hoping that someone is going to tell me that its the alternator (or something like that) which is also causing the other symptoms. Thanks (and pulling whats left of my hair out), Pete

  • Ford Focus - Buying a used car.....but which one? 30 Jul 2014 (Forum)
Hi All I've had an aweful few weeks....About 8 weeks ago now I had a running with a hedge and wrote off my car (06 1.4 tdci fiesta). I thankfully came out without a scratch on me and, although frustrated at the impending inconveiniance of not having a car, I wasn't too disappointed.
  • Vauxhall Omega-B (03) 2.2 DTi (Y22DTH) - Omega-B 2.2 DTi Limp Mode & P1220 Error Code 1 Apr 2014 (Forum)
I've done the following: Changed the fuel filter, filled the new one with 'Diesel Magic' and run the engine for 15 min's afterwards. Cracked off the injector pipes and all are getting good pressure. Checked the fuel system for leaks. Cleaned the EGR valve and checked it with a vacuum pump.
  • DIY servicing - Extended intervals - a proposal? 29 Jul 2013 (Forum)
(VW502.00 vs VW504.00 in petrol engines) Disadvantages: You  only drain ~3/4 of the oil down when the filter is not changed so not a complete oil change. But still better than running on oil for up to 2 years? Obviously all DIY servicing is going to affect resale value of the car - its an unknown quantity to a buyer - not concerned about that as I run cars for a long time.
  • 1999 Honda Civic MB6 shaped 1.8 VTi - Air Conditioning is cycling on and off 12 Jul 2013 (Forum)
For years, the AC has never been working on my car. I've finally, years later, just finished getting the AC up and running again. Bought a new dryer, condensor and schrader valves for it. The question i've got though, is related to the characteristics of the AC running now, since I can't remember how it ran many years ago.
  • Cheap (and smallish) family car for London (Rover Freelander S, Citroen Xsara Picasso, VW Golf) 29 May 2013 (Forum)
Living in London the busses and tube are great for getting around. Plus my cherished Saab 96v4 wasn't used that often and kept on getting hit and run while parked. I have two young daughters and the convenience of a car is attractive, but I know it's going to get some cosmetic damage as living in a flat it will have to be kept on the street.
  • Peugeot 306 - Peugeot 306 1.4 Engine issue 6 May 2013 (Forum)

  • Reading Half Marathon Yesterday Traffic Chaos 23 Mar 2013 (Forum)
Have we really degenerated into such a tin pot banana republic that all semblance of normal life is disrupted by organised thugs in security outfits in the name of a bloomin running competition? Give me strength.
  • BMW 3 Series Compact E36 316se M42 engine - loosing / using water and strange cooling heating 10 Mar 2013 (Forum)
Carpets are dry and there doesn't seem to be any sign of a leak from the heater matrix. While running it I couldn't see the temp gauge but the rad fan was doing its 3 second burst thing. There is no mayo or yoghurt on the dip stick or oil cap and haven took the car to my local garage they told me they dont 'think' its the head gasket.
  • any - driving in China 25 Feb 2013 (Forum)
All cars , including MB ML,  Landcruisers , Q7,  S class , X5 ,  running on unleaded at about 80p  a litre   ( no cars ran on diesel at all )   Driving standards are bad.  Nobody ever lets anybody out and nobody slows for pedestrians , these can wait 5 mins at marked crossings and then make a run for it   Electric scooters drive on pavements at night with their lights off .
  • Ford Mondeo - Severe brake vibration 24 Oct 2011 (Forum)
I thoroughly cleaned the faces of the hubs and rears of the discs when fitting so I don't think it is due to dirt causing run out.  It's almost a foregone conclusion that if I get a DTI gauge on the discs that the run out will be out of spec, but that won't help me with the cause which is the real issue here.  I would also add the calipers were stripped down several times with the slider pins thoroughly cleaned and regreased and they are not sticking.
