Cavalier SRI MK3 2.0 8V 31 Jan 2003 (Forum)
I recently had the engine mangement light appear on the dash, i got the computer and plug it in and it there was 2 faults, the air flow metre and something called, "No RPM signal or sensor" i replaced the air flow metre and the light has gone off, but i still don't know what the other fault is, I have a problem starting the car from warm after it reaches its desired temperature, it just always cuts out straight away and u have to keep the revs up for a while untill it will run on its own, then it is perfectly ok, i have also cleaned the ISCV and the all the hoses to the manifold and are now free from blockages from oil. Could this RPM problem be why i have starting problems, i also heard that the problem is linked to the crankshafy sensor or camshaft sensor but i have no idea. -
New small car choice 27 Jan 2003 (Forum)
My girlfriend is currently trying to decide what model of small car to buy, with a view to replacing it in three years when the warranty runs out. We were very impressed with the Micra and Yaris, but are a little concerned about depreciation. (Also looked at Clio, 206, Lupo, 106, Polo & Arosa. She wasn't impressed.) The old Micra (she currently owns one) seems to have depreciated badly compared to almost all other superminis. -
Rover 115 glowplug relay 'chatter' 23 Jan 2003 (Forum)
Occasionally when turning on the ignition the glowplug light doesn't extinguish until the car is started (as if a temperature sensor isn't working) and then when the engine is running you can hear the relay cutting in & out, at idle this causes the engine speed to change (I assume due to electrical load). As far as I can tell the problem seems related to the water temperature sensor (green one on the front right of the cyl. head), I've tried 'tightening' the connections on this but it hasn't made any difference, I suppose it could be either a faulty sensor or a broken wire. -
Astra diesel cold starting 3 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I give it 2/3 short bursts and you can hear it close to starting but when it does eventually catch it picks up very slowly, with a tiny bit of vibration, sounds slightly like it is running uneven, and kicks out quite a bit of smoke until it picks up. Once warmed up slightly -no problem. The glow plugs are new so there should be sufficient heat. I have a new air and fuel filter to fit in case there is a blockage in the airflow or moisture in the fuel but would appreciate any advice as to other potential solutions Allan -
Golf mk2 GTI 8v or 16v 22 Nov 2002 (Forum)
The 16v costs more to insure and some parts are considerably more than for the 8v. Also there seems to be an issue on with its suitability for running on unleaded - a problem the 8v doesn't have when fitted with digifant fuel injection. Of course, there is more cache and power with the 16v. I have also heard people say the 8v is better to drive around town and not at full bore because more torque is produced at lower revs. -
White line fever 14 Nov 2002 (Forum)
In a (probably) unrelated move, my local authority recently resurfaced a 50-60 yard stretch of a street on my way to work. The street in question runs dead straight for about half a mile and, for as long as I\'ve been using it, has had no central white line along its entire length. It has now though - at least over the 50 yard length of the resurfaced area. -
Cavalier SRI MK3 Fuel Problems 6 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Also when starting from warm when the car has been driven about then stopped, if u start the engine straight away it cuts out all the time until u keep revving it up when its about to stall. then it will eventually keep running. I have changed the fuel pump, fuel regulator, air flow meter, vacum, fuel filter, its even been away to a garage, which tuned the car up and still has the same problem, Be much appreciated if you could give me as much feed back as possible please. thank you -
Astra - slow cranking 28 Oct 2002 (Forum)
I have an Astra diesel estate with an Isuzu 1.7td engine. When it is running the engine is fine. The alternator and battery are new but I still have a slow cranking problem. Yesterday morning I ran it for approx 1 hour and left it for 2 hrs and it fired straight away. Yesterday afternoon I was moving some kitchen gear between houses and usually the period between stopping and restarting the engine was from 5 to 30 mins but each time it just cranked quite slowly before firing. -
Networtk Q rally ticket price rip-off 3 Oct 2002 (Forum)
At the foot of the web page there's a note about single stage passes being available at £20 a stage, but as Margam is actually two stages (SS16 and SS17), being run twice, do I have to pay £40 now?? The girl at the call centre seemed v-e-r-y confused... http://www.wrc.com/en_GB/beforehp_NZ.htm http://www.wrc.com/en_GB/News/NewsDetail/2002_R_GB_Tickets.htm -
the clean screen battle 2 2 Aug 2002 (Forum)
there are several types of "weave", i've found the coarser the better but you'll have to experiment. just soak in water, squeeze out the excess and it removes everything (with a tiny bit of elbow grease)- including grease/oily film on the inside. during a long run on a hot night there's nothing better at getting all the flies/midges/moths off. i always have one in the glove box. for the washer bottle, i find the holt's screen wash from halfords very effective. normally speaking, if your wipers are squeaking then it's time to change them since all the graphite has gone from the blades - hence the rubber chatters on the glass. i always use valéo or marechal blades. ciao -
306 Air Con 17 Jun 2002 (Forum)
When I eventully got the pipes from Peugeot summer was nearly over. Pipes fitted and re gassed. Worked beautifully. Have run system every week as recommended. Now have noticed that there is a gushing sound from behind the dash. Compressor is kicking in but system is not getting cold. I'm sumising a leak but despite being filled with the dyed gas cannot find any indication of a leak from any of the pipes around the engine compartment. -
Audi 80 7 Jun 2002 (Forum)
The garage that did the jet wash couldn't find the leak, an independant specialist said it was the sump gasket my dad found it was the oil pressure switch seal. Now I am left with a car that runs erratically when jsut heated and then settles dwn. Is there any fellow HJ reader who may be able to help?? I've heard that the brain, therm problem but no one can tell me for sure what it is. Thanks. -

216 cutting out 25 Apr 2002 (Forum)
Engine just stops as if ignition is switched off, regardless of revs. Sometimes you get a false alarm, ie cuts for half a second or so then keeps running, others, it just stops regardless. It starts again on the key immediately. I only had about 15 minutes on it yesterday, and established by putting our timing lamp on the HT leads, it is losing sparks, but of course it could be losing fuel too if the main relay is dicky. -
renault 21 2.0 gtx 28 Mar 2002 (Forum)
any ideas? have run the above for 6years and 100 000k (add 97 000k when bought) no major problems (capably of own maint which keeps cost down) until recently. car now struggles to start. every 3 weeks i clean: 1) the crankshaft sensor 2) the inside of the distributor cap (ingress of oil form camshaft) 3) the rotar arm. all ok for a bit then back to 1,2,3. immediatly after 1,2,3 engine starting and choke impeccable. made the classic mistake of off loading to a work mate (bought a nice nissan primera from motorpoint) who has inherited the problems (though fully aware of!) -
De-coke methods. 22 Mar 2002 (Forum)
In it there was a tip for an easy de-coke.... Remove the tube from your vacuum operated wipers and dip in a jar of Hydrogen Peroxide. Start and run the engine for a few minutes allowing the chemical to be drawn into the inlet manifold. The theory was that the "supercharge of oxygen received from the hydrogen peroxide" would burn out any carbon deposits! -
Volvo petrol vent system 6 Mar 2002 (Forum)
The vent line consists of a gravity valve (I would think that this prevent's the tank emptying if the car rolls over) and a diagphram valve, I am thinking that if the diagphram valve is passing then the turbo pressure within the inlet manifold will pressurise the fuel tank?????. If this is happening how would this affect the running of the engine?, the tickover is very lumpy but only when the tank is less than half full of fuel. Anyway before I start ripping things to bits just finding out if anyone has experiance of this system and common probs? -
Ventilation problems - MONDEO 9 Feb 2002 (Forum)
I've been noticing for a while that when ever I switch on the cabin fan in my diesel mondeo (95N LX TD) the smell of unburnt/burnt diesel fumes enters the cabin. I've checked the engine bay for any obvious fuel leaks with the engine running, couldn't find any obvious leaks. I was also told at a recent MOT that the front exhaust downpipe was leaking (not a failure point) so I had it changed even though the mechanic who replaced it said there wasn't anything wrong with it. -
