  • Changing a headlight bulb - the easy way 8 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Five minutes later, involving removing the old bulb, going into the shop and buying a new bulb (£2.95) fitting the new bulb and closing the bonnet, I was driving away perfectly legally. Why can't all cars be like that.
  • Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - 2003 1.6 Hissing sound from brake pedal 20 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Hi I have a vw golf 1.6SE made 2003. When I have been driving and braking for 10 minutes or more I get a hissing sound coming from the inside of the car around the brake pedal. If I stop the car and pump the pedal a few times the hissing noise stops but comes back again when you start to drive and brake again.
  • A car that will safely handle snowy hillroads? 23 Oct 2008 (Forum)
or an X3 or possibly X5 (second hand obviously!) as I am basically looking for a smallish 4x4 that can cope with the snowy roads, and also drives well round corners in normal conditions. Does anyone have any experience of these cars or indeed others in snow?
  • Vauxhall Zafira A (1999 - 2005) - 2002 - Clutch / Gearbox 10 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Basically, with the engine running, you can't select any of the gears. However, if you put it in gear and then start it, you can drive it (but only in that gear). Had to drive it home in 2nd for her after it expired in Edinburgh at the weekend. I'm thinking a hydraulics or a vacuum problem but would like some second opinions. Thankfully she's decided just to get it fixed and then sell it as it has been a disaster right from the start.

  • Audi 80 Mk II (1991-1995) - 94 1.9 TDi alternator belt. 9 Jul 2008 (Forum)
From looking, I have to remove the other belt, and it almost looks like I have to remove the red / fans to get access?! Is that really the case? Also, i'm working on the vehicle outside- my work is 20mins drive away and can work undercover there- would it do any harm driving without an alternator belt? Thanks in advance!

  • Which diesel car? 20 May 2008 (Forum)
I will be starting my own business soon and need to very economical car to drive. Will be driving about 75 miles daily, 7 days a week. Need to replace my existing petrol car (30 mpg) with something that cheap to buy and run. Image not imporant, but no Micra, no French cars. The car needs to be reliable.
  • BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 2000 1.9 ltr Automatic fuel consumption 19 May 2008 (Forum)
(Stamped service record book only, no bills) I am concerned re fuel consumption. It does only about 23mpg with no city driving involved. I did a motorway run of 300 miles which averaged about 30 mpg. Could anyone please tell me if this is about right? If not what could be the problem? (I do drive sensibly)
  • Car written off - time to buy a new one 27 Mar 2008 (Forum)
My Peugeot 207 was written off last week (drunk driver steered into it whilst parked). I must say, I never really liked the car - sluggish and a bit like driving a tank. (1.4 model). Anyway, I don't have a huge budget (probably around 8k) and want to get something fairly new. A year old would suffice. Has anyone got any suggestions? I need something reliable, and fairly nice to drive.
  • What cheap two wheeler? 7 Mar 2008 (Forum)
But that model is no longer available. Could you please suggest some reasonably priced options? I think one can drive two wheelers with a learner license. Thanx
  • London Congestion Tax 31 Dec 2007 (Forum)
slightly off thread, but near enough (hopefully)... i read in your column yesterday a letter from a Land Rover 90 driving chap in N. London worried about the Greater London Pollution Zone (or whatever it is) due to come in 2010... do you know what vehicles this will affect? I've seen signs that relate to Goods Vehicles etc, but a Land Rover 90 is getting horribly nearer a normal car in my mind... and as I drive an 8 yr old 3 litre petrol car that i'm planning on keeping, i'm getting a tad worried...is Red Ken after me?
  • MOT and Insurance question. 27 Oct 2007 (Forum)
What would the BiB have had to say if we had been caught? Would we have been done for driving without insurance? All hypothetical now as the car had an MOT this afternoon. Moved from IHAQ as its legitimately motoring related.

  • advice on buying diesel, NOT ford tdci! 1 Jul 2007 (Forum)
I have a 52 plate 20l tdci mondeo with 78000 on the clock. I've had 3 different injectors reprogrammed in 5 months and i'm now reluctant to drive it in case the glow plug light comes on! I love the car, but it might as well be a pile of scrap metal as i'm too scared to take it off the drive! Is common rail technology still in the experimental stage or is it just the tdci.
  • LPG vs Diesel 18 May 2007 (Forum)
What I really want to know is how good or bad it is to drive an LPG car comapred to a diesel one on motorways. Also if LGP could achieve such remarkable MPG then why aren't manufacturers pre-fitting them on their cars?
  • S-Max vs Verso 16 Mar 2007 (Forum)

  • Parking Question 2 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Simple question, neighbour has a hardstanding in front of his house that he uses to park his car, no drop kerb or drive etc, just bumps over the kerb (carefully) and drives over the small grassed area to access his hardstanding, I have been told that as there is no 'official' drop kerb that if anyone wishes to park in front of his house he has no legal basis to complain, is this correct?
