Premium diesel oil 21 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Have recently acquired a 2.4 5cylinder diesel VW Transporter off a friend, which is 8 years old with 84k on the clock, serviced in a variety of places. I intend to run it for 3 years plus, with 20k miles pa, meaning 3 annual oil changes. At this age, should I use fully synth diesel oil, such as Halfords own, or any cheap stuff from my local factors? Will the better oil prove beneficial long term to the engine longevity. Presumably it makes no difference to mpg...my only concern is reliability as I cannot afford a newer vehicle in the foreseeable future. -
Flickering oil light Rover 414 15 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Rover 414 Sli 1990 'H' - just had the headgasket replaced for the 2nd time at 102K miles including skim, new oil, new cam belt and thermostat. Now 600 miles after the repair at 70 mph speed runs the oil light flickers on/off when I come to a stop or changing down in the gears - I can get it to go out at tickover by throtling up the tick over to about 950/1000rpm. -
Advice to a young driver 24 Oct 2001 (Forum)
Have just acquired a 1986 E30 BMW 316 which has done 96k and is in very good condition. I would like to change the oil and filter but do not know which oil and which grade to choose. Honest John states in the Car by Car Breakdown that the E30 is a "prime candidate for fully synthetic oil (engine won't last forever without it)". -

Kia Sorento 2.5 diesel auto "06" plate - KIA Sorento intercooler 10 Nov 2013 (Forum)
Checked the blanking plate and it is OK. Black smoke with lack of power......Have found the air filter is blocked (although only changed 4 months ago. Have replaced with new and also done a fuel filter change for good measure. This seems to be the original one from new which was meant to get changed during a service 4 months ago! There is an oil leak beneath the front of the car which has turned out to be the intercooler. -

chevrolet epica vcdi - servicing 20 Oct 2010 (Forum)
Just had an oil change done at Evans Halshaw in St Albans (while having some warranry work carried out), and realised when I got home that the "service technichian" had filled the engine with the wrong grade of oil, Happily I spotted it and Evans Halshaw have refunded the oil change and apologised, and the car has now been drained and filled with Castrol Edge fully synthetic. -
Ford - KA (2002) - Smokey on cold startup 4 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Just a bit too bad to 'let it develop' although once warm, its fine. Drives well, uses a litre of oil in 6k, doesn't use any water, doesn't pressurise coolant excessively. Valve stem oil seals look ok with rockerbox off - soft, not hardened as far as I can tell. Any thoughts? Ta Neil Subject line changed to include model and year. - PU -
Vaux Astra G 98 Reg 1.6 16V LS 3 Nov 2004 (Forum)
As my car was lacking power/hesitating acceleration & misfiring, I did an oil flush & spark plug change in my vauxhall, changing the oil from a mineral to a part synthetic 10W-40 Castrol Magnatec and the spark plugs from NGK to Bosch Super 4. However, the problem still persists - I checked the spark plugs 2 weeks later & all were slightly sooty and one was oily. -
AX head gasket tips 18 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Hi everyone I'm in the middle of changing the head gasket on a Citroen AX10 (alloy block, wet liners). The old gasket failed due to a crack in the gasket across the oil feed to the head - oil everywhere, but no overheating problems. Before I put it all back together, does anyone have any useful tips for this engine, things I should look out for on reassembly? -

Which oil for my petrol Passat 26 Feb 2007 (Forum)
After four main dealer services when the car has been filled with 10W/30, this time the dealer has used Castrol 5W/30 Longlife III on my 2.0ltr 8V Petrol Passat. Just wondered if this is wrong and why they would suddenly change. What do I top it up with? Can I use the 10W/30 Halfords Oil that I recently bought? -
Ford Ka 30k service 29 Feb 2004 (Forum)
The last time i had my Ka serviced, when the oil was changed a good quality shell 5w40 mineral oil was put in (less than 3000 miles ago). This year with my next service looming i want to start using a fully synthetic oil (0w40)in the car and was wondering if it could go straight in without doing any harm. cheers for any help -
Vectra oil check sensor 23 Jun 2002 (Forum)
Is the sensor ultra sensitive or is there a fault? The car is still under warranty, so it isn't a problem if the sensor needs changing. -
303,000 mile Rover Montego 30 Aug 2001 (Forum)
My wife's Rover Montego 2.0 GSi {petrol} , 1990 on a G, has done 303,000 miles. Is this a record? Oil changed every 5000, only pay £3.00 for the oil, sometimes use second hand oil drained from my Volvo 940. Only needed £15 of bits of a scappper to pass the MoT. Third party insuance. Cheap motoring or what? -
Audi A4 - Multi-tronics gear box issues 9 Jun 2020 (Forum)
I have a 2018 plate 1.4 TFSI black edition s tronic and have been advised by my dealer that because I did not change the gear oil at the correct time/miles has caused a fault meaning a new main control gear box unit ECU is required (not covered under warranty due to me not changing the oil at the correct time doh and at a 2k cost). -
SEAT Leon - Any help appreciated 28 Apr 2011 (Forum)
I took my car in for an MOT & service this saturday and had a phone call from the garage to say that car had passed the MOT but when they had drained the oil, for the service, they found that the coil that goes into the sump had been cross threaded by whoever had changed the oil last and they can't now put anymore oil in until either they can find someone to re-bore the sump or, more likely I will need a new sump. -

Peugot 207 - Is it OK to mix OW-30 and 5W-30 oils? 17 May 2024 (Forum)
Safest bet is therefore to use 0W-30. But what if the existing oil is 5W-30, will mixing the two oils cause any damage? Want to try and avoid having to do a full oil change in a garage (also not too keen on driving it to the garage if the oil is very low). Any advice welcome!!
