Michelins are around £150 a tyre.I know you usually "get what you pay for" but I am looking for a compromise

  • MINI Options 11 May 2004 (Forum)
I\'m looking at getting myself a new Mini. I can either get a regular Cooper, or stretch to a pretty poverty-spec Cooper S. Has anyone any idea how this will affect residuals. A/C is a £700 option and I\'m concerned that not having it will make it harder to shift a few years down the line. Would I be better off giving up on the Cooper S and settling for a well spec-ed standard Cooper?

  • V8s, boxers, V6s why sound nice? 1 Mar 2004 (Forum)
While out for a walk this morning I couldn't help noticing a scooby drive past and thought it sounded quite nice. This got me wondering why V8's and to a lesser extent V6's soounds so appealing. There must be a scientific explanation somewhere why an offbeat V8 burble sounds pleasing. Something to do with odd and even harmonics perhaps...?
  • polo wishbone 20 Aug 2003 (Forum)
i have been given the job of getting a family friend\'s polo up to roadworthy condition, as it has been woefully neglected over the past year or so! its had an MOT and failed, amongst other things, on an unbonded rear bush on o/s wishbone - my question is, can you just change the bushes or do you have the whole wishbone as it comes complete with bushes?

  • 60 years of local car sales 20 Dec 2021 (Forum)
Looking at the number and size of new developments that surprised me but its still a 22% increase against a UK increase of 29% over the same period. In the 1960’s we had new car dealerships for Peugeot, Vauxhall, Renault, 2 x BMC, Ford and Roots Group. By the 1970’s nothing had changed really except by the end of the decade one of the BMC dealers had changed to Toyota, Lada and FSO had appeared and for a very short time in the mid 70’s Fiat had a showroom in the local Fine Fare.
  • Ford S-MAX - Family car search is slowly progressing… 7 Mar 2025 (Forum)
Any thoughts on who is best to use for a pre purchase inspection? Any thoughts, or used car buying tips? Or does anyone think the S-MAX is a terrible idea?! There are not that many petrol manual versions out there unfortunately. Thanks in advance for your input.
  • Positive (only) aspects of UK motoring 16 Feb 2010 (Forum)
You can see where Heath and Safety regulations come from when you consider that, as it was the same here a few decades back and car manufacturers thought nothing of harm to drivers or others in car design. Traffic just chokes the streets in Tacloban and it`s a free for all. It`s pretty good, motoring in the UK - although the `negative feeding` personalities of many people cause the generation of tabloid rubbish that is eagerly lapped up as `truth` The question is - can a 100 post thread be generated that`s entirely positive about UK motoring?
  • MINI Cooper S R56 - MINI Cooper S Timing Chain Failure 21 Oct 2019 (Forum)
Morning all, I'm looking for a little bit of advice. We own a R56 Cooper S, the 1.6T one. On Friday, it cut out, when my partner was reversing out a parking space at her work, and refused to start. The AA came out, looked at it, decided he reckoned the timing chain had snapped, as it appears the top end isn't turning, and towed it home for us, since most garages were shut for the holiday weekend.
  • Vat - Vat Qualifying vehicles, an expensive option? 10 Nov 2010 (Forum)
Buy a new car, get the 14.89% (or whatever it is) off the purchase price. Sell in 2 yrs without having to charge vat 2. Buy a s/h 6 month old demo car, save say 3k ish, and then sell 2yrs later without adding vat 3. Buy a s/h 6 month old car that is non qualifying and sell 2yrs later. Choices 1 &2 look best, probably 2, as someone else would of suffered some of the depreciation.
  • Porsche Boxster 986 + Boxster S (1996 - 2004) - 2000 Boxster S? Would you buy?? 15 Dec 2009 (Forum)
I've found my dream car although having one or two doubts after reading about engine problems. Here are the details: 2000 Boxster S 2 owners - first was an older couple who had it from new and the current owner had it bought for her by an ex-boyfriend (who is a Porsche owner himself) from a Porsche dealership. As a suprise he also had it resprayed metallic silver/pink (via Porsche - they dealt with it all) and she's given the Porsche dealership her permission to let me have access to all her details if need be.
  • What price Freedom? m/homes,caravans, hotels, boat 23 May 2009 (Forum)
A caravan then? there`s room here, the tiny Freedom caravan is only 750kg and would easily be pulled by the 200nm of the van. That said - nearly £9,000 for the Freedom would buy at least 100 nights in hotels. That`s around 10 years worth of hotel rooms, given that most of our holiday effort is visiting family in the far east.
  • Pug 205GTi 1.6 - Low tickover & cut out. 27 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Now most of you are probably thinking it?s the idle valve, but there?s something else to add to the mix, at night, when the headlights are on, or I?ve got the wipers on, it?s simply a struggle to keep her going at all as the revs just are far too low.

  • Yaris D4D vs Golf TDI 130 12 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Yes I know this topic sounds like an unlikely head to head, but I have a decision to make. I own a Golf TDI 130 5 door bought new in January 2002 from Motorhouse 2000, it\'s an EU import. I bought the Golf over the Christmas hols in a hurry after I rejected my new MINI Cooper, following legal advice. But that\'s another story! The early BMW Mini\'s were not good news...
  • Ford S-MAX - When to replace high mileage 30 Mar 2023 (Forum)
Will talk to our regular independent garage and ask them to do a filter clean. We have a 2012 Ford S-MAX 2.0 TDCi Titanium with 160k mileage bought at 136k mileage one owner in 2019 (was a high mileage car for someone driving 19k p.a . We don’t think the DPF has been replaced before we bought it.
