  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - '05 115 bhp TDCi Dodgy Starting 1 Nov 2007 (Forum)
On Saturday 20th I bought a 55 plate Mondeo from a fiat dealership. I have noticed a couple of times that when I start it, it starts but runs really badly. You have to switch it off and start it again. It's as though it wants to, or is on the verge of stalling - presing the accelerator doesn't clear it. It doesn't happen every time, perhaps 1 in 4 starts.
  • Choosing a diesel - What Mazda6 size car ? 31 Oct 2007 (Forum)
I'm a high mileage driver and currently run a Honda Legend (yes, I know but it's comfortable and easy to drive) with 105,000 miles on the clock. I'm contemplating throwing in the towel for the Honda due to spiralling fuel costs and the fear of hefty repair bills as the mileage gets higher and opting for a diesel.
  • MPV's French/Italian or German? 28 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Comments on the French engines would also be welcome. Will be carrying 2 children +dogs or lots of children and doing runs to France a couple of times a year (cheap french servicing?) thanks
  • BMW 3-Series E36 (1991 - 1998) - When to replace or refurbish diesel injectors? 23 Oct 2007 (Forum)
I have a '97 325tds touring which I'm very happy with but I'm beginning to notice a lack of power at low revs, lumpy running from cold, poor starting when hot and occasionnal the fuel injection warning light comes on and the car looses power but this rectifies itself when I lift off and re-apply the throttle. The car has done 133000 miles and had a new diesel injector pump 2 years ago at great expense, I would like to keep it for much longer.
  • Vauxhall Astra G Petrol (1998 - 2004) - yr 2002, 1.6 8 valve. Using carb cleaner 18 Oct 2007 (Forum)
I bought a can of Wyns intake cleaner, after taking off the hose from air filter to throttle body and finding all sorts of varnish and gunk on the throttle housing and butterfly. Would there be any risk in damaging the sensors if spraying it in whilst engine running? I know some cars have those hot wire type sensors (forgot technical name) and they can be ruined. BTW it's a 2002 1.6 Astra 8 valve so not that hi tech but multiple fuel injection model. Thanks.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - Mk1 -petrol or diesel? 18 Oct 2007 (Forum)
She is a 'spirited driver' and wondered what would be the best option for a good blend of overtaking performance and ride comfort. MPG is not critical, but 35+ on a run would be good!

  • BMW 5-Series E34 (1987 - 1996) - Omega 2.5td pump to bmw 525td 7 Oct 2007 (Forum)
    Not so, we were then told by the local injection pump reconditioner that they are different. Is this true ? and have you ever heard of anyone doing this conversion to make their bmw run? We are now stuck with an unusable bmw 525 td in good nick but....hope to get it working. Many thanks {Post reformatted to remove the overdose of >>>> symbols - DD}
  • Replacement for 1.2 16v MkII Punto 1 Sep 2007 (Forum)
To that end, I'm thinking about a Toyota Yaris or Honda Jazz. I know HJ recommends the Jazz. Can any other backroomers give ideas/suggestions. Or should I just run the Punto - though worried over long termness of CVT (though no problems to date)? Thanks in anticipation AA
  • Using Mobility Scooters on roads - Unbelievable. 31 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Just going past the local sports centre spotted someone trundling along in his mobility scooter at about 5 mph. What made me so incredulous was that there is a very large combine footpath/ cyclepath running parallel to this road. Does this gentleman have a death wish or just completely oblivious to the danger he was exposing himself to? The road can be like a racetrack at any time of day, and following traffic completely blocked any view of him to approaching traffic.
  • Night-time parking £260 per hour 21 Aug 2007 (Forum)
The tow charges strike me as wholly disproportionate, a little like bank overdraft letter charges. The Council runs two levels of parking fine - £40 for minor offences, and £60 for offences which cause a 'major restriction to traffic flow and major inconvenience to other motorists.' It certainly wasn't causing a restriction to traffic flow, it was after all a designated parking bay.

  • Getting across the Channel 6 Aug 2007 (Forum)
I'm considering doing a Blighty run from France for the first time in quite a while. I want to avoid the Channel Pirates if I can but a western crossing would suit me, so - does anyone have any recent experience of the ferry that replaced P and O on the Portsmouth-Le Havre route?
  • Driving should have smiles-per-hour! 1 Aug 2007 (Forum)
The sun was shining, and there was barely a cloud in sight, so I pulled the covers off the '928 and took it out for a run. Within a few minutes of heading out, I'd been followed by a Ferrari 348; spotted an imaculate 911 and overtaken a gleaming 944 convertible. It was as if the '80s were back....if I'd had a Level 42 cassette, it would have been perfect!
  • Previa TPS - what's it for really? 30 Jul 2007 (Forum)
To drive it at all it needed constant (although tiny) movement of the throttle to keep going, the revs would just die away to nothing making it dangerous in traffic. I found that if I disconnected the throttle position sensor it would run just fine although the idle revs seem a little high at about 900rpm. It's just been through its MOT and I had thought there would be emmissions issues but no - no problems there. Can anyone tell me why it works well without this sensor and what might the downside be of it not being fitted?
  • Bent crankshaft auxiliary belt pulley 26 Jul 2007 (Forum)
This was repaired at the roadside but it has now partially shredded the new drive belt again some fifty miles later. The crankshaft pulley appears to be slightly bent; when the engine is running it looks as though the outer edge is wobbling from side to side. Could this have been done when the first belt snapped and was thrown off? is anything else likely to have been damaged? the car is due to be recovered (again!)
  • 05 1.6 VVt Megane II - rattle on startup 19 Jul 2007 (Forum)
The only thing I can it sounds like is a bit like a football rattle! When the noise occurs the car will generally start (sometimes takes a second attempt) and then runs fine for remainder of the journey (apart from some initial hesitation when cold - a trait of these cars I believe?) The cars under warranty and is going back to the garage, but knowing Renaults poor dealer reputation I reckon knowledge is power and would be interested if anyone else has had a similar problem?
  • Accord Exhaust Bandage 7 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Hi all, Ive just been given an old Honda Accord to use while my Rover 416 is off the road....Its a 1986 2.0 EX and although 20 years old, in very good condition with only 56000 on the clock. It runs like a dream but the only thing Ive had to do was to cover up a small crack in the exhaust pipe with a bandage (from Halfords). Ive done a neat and secure job, and covered up quite a way past either side of the crack...its actually on the pipe rather than at a join with a box, or on a box itself.
  • Escort mk7 ECU swap 28 Jun 2007 (Forum)
hi, me and a friend have recently swapped the engine in my 1999t escort from a 1.6 zetec (snapped cambelt, uneconomical repair) to a 1993k 1.8 zetec 105ps (free donor car that ran perfectly) the car runs rough with the original ecu (assumed mapping/lean mixture etc). the problem we've encountered is that due to the 1.6 ford immobiliser we don't seem to be able to start the car using the original 1.8 ecu, so the question is : when buying a second hand 1996 onwards immobiliser-compatible ecu (ebay seems to have some) will it need to come with any ther kit for the immobiliser (compatible transponder key etc) or can it just be plugged straight in and started. i've searched the web but got no straight answers.
  • New Fiesta 1.3 28 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Felt like no power steering, which was a blessing because it really goes where you point it. Perky in town, even though the engine was not run in. On the Autobahn, a 6th gear wouldn't have gone a miss. In comparison the new Opel Corsa feels bigger, more confort, but much more gutless with the 1.2 engine. Also with the Fiesta I liked the non-colour coded, non-electric mirrors.
