  • Ford Mondeo - Mondeo central locking - mind of its own! 7 Dec 2010 (Forum)
The key fob works fine, I can open, lock and double lock doors as normal This problem is fine when your in the car but today as the engine was running and doors closed whilst I scraped the snow off the doors locked, locking me out. A work mate got me back in with the aid of a wedge in the top of the door, metal rod down the gap and popped the door handle from the inside...easy...too easy.
  • Toyota Corolla and Verso - How to care for a DPF? 7 Dec 2010 (Forum)
Some short urban journeys too, though I try to avoid these for several reasons. I tend to boot it on the m-way by sticking in 4th when I join and running the engine up to about 3500rpm for a short while, maybe a couple of minutes. When I do this a cloud of black smoke comes out of the exhaust, as if the car's clearing its throat. Is it the build-up of this sort of soot which does for filters in the end?
  • Renault Modus - Renault Modus - any good? 29 Nov 2010 (Forum)
Hi I need of a small run around which has a fairly 'high-up' driving position. A friend has offered me their Renault Modus 57 plate 25k 1.2 Turbo Dynamique for £4,250 (they got offered £4,400 as a trade in) Its a nice drive and i like the air con and part leather.
  • Nissan Almera (2000 - 2006) - 00 1.5 Front NS door won't unlock 6 Nov 2010 (Forum)
We have a Nissan Almera 1.5SE 5 door which has been faultless to drive and run over the last 4 years of ownership. BUT the doors on the nearside have recently started playing up, by that I mean staying locked even when unlocked by central locking, and refusing to open. This has now happened on the front passenger door, which is proving to be a pain, as I could live with the back sticking locked.
  • scorpio cosworth 2.9 24v - car starts and stops 27 Oct 2010 (Forum)

It seems that when it gets warm it stops and starts when its gone cold. I have had an diagnostic out and said it was the edis module, i bought one and it still had the problem so he said he really didnt know what was wrong as he tested all he could.
  • Honda Jazz - Good long termer? honda jazz 26 Oct 2010 (Forum)
Will be used for a 20 mile commute and occasional mway trips. Should add that I am wanting to save some cash on running costs so perhaps my first point is academic! Also been looking at the 1.6 focus, but dont think that its much better on fuel than my 2 litre, so apart from being newer, not much advantage.
  • Reliable car recommendation (crosscountry commute) 7 Oct 2010 (Forum)
Hi all,  I'll shortly be switching jobs meaning that I'll need to go from Cambridgeshire to Bristol at the beginning and end of each week (until I move house at least) - I've been looking at public transport but it doesn't look ideal and I don't fancy trips through London or late night trains home after a week at the office - so I was wondering if there was any particular make/model of car that you would recommend that would be cheap to run, and also capable of making the 200 mile trip (each way) with minimal fuss?  As I'll only really need the car for the next six months or so; I'd rather not spend lots and if I could pick up a reliable second-hand car for a reasonable price that would certainly be my favoured option.
  • Peugeot 306 1.6 petrol - fuel pump problem 5 Oct 2010 (Forum)
I'm thinking something has shorted somewhere but I'm still quite confused as to how I could get the fuel pump running by shorting out the terminals on the relay plug?
  • Toyota Carina E - help me 27 Sep 2010 (Forum)
After driving for let's 10mins the car starts to vibrate, and it feels as though the motor wants to run away or stop on me.   I have had it to the service stations on 3 occassions, so far they have changed the plugs, the plug cables and a lock! To my dismay the same problem started up again today, I have contacted my service center again, and now they are saying that they can't figure out what can be causing that problem.
  • Ford CMax 1.8 petrol - Disconnecting the alternator 13 Sep 2010 (Forum)
I have checked the water pump in situ and there is a very tiny amount of play in the bearing, but otherwise it feels smooth. I'm wondering about slipping the belt off that runs the water pump and alternator and starting the engine. This should rule them in or out as a possible cause. Question is, will disconnecting the belt make the engine light come on and will I then need to visit Ford to get it reset?
  • Ford Focus III (2008 - ) - 08 1.6 Bad smells inside the car - what is it ? 6 Sep 2010 (Forum)
Very happy with purchase but if honest, slightly dissapointed with mpg - averaging 42.7 and thought it would be more. However, my biggest worry is that on a run over to parents on Friday (about 50 miles) we started to get bad suplher type smells (like a stale flatulence or cabbage) which then dissipated. twenty minutes passed and the smell would come back.
  • Vw Passat 1.9TDI 52 reg - Car not starting 29 Aug 2010 (Forum)
There are no blockages within the fuel filter which is new but the car doesn't seem to have any fuel for starting only when running. Can't find any air leaks and or any crimped pipes. As stated car started first time with Easy Start in the air intake pipe but won't start on its own. O therwise I will have to tow it to a VW garage at massive expense.

  • Cadillac CTS - I bought a 2006 Cadillac CTS one year ago and... 21 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Front pads just done at 17,500 miles as they were very low.  averaging about 23 mpg, but it gets hit hard around town - a decent run achieves high 20's to average it out.  It 's very easy to drive quickly but also slowly at say 50 mph on the motorway.  This is because there is no apparent difference in interior noise at 30 mph or 70 mph - a great motorway cruiser and easy to drive.
  • best feature in any of your cars 17 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Or perhaps the Dolby Surround option on the Volvo S80 stereo (oh, Radio 2 was never the same again!)? Or the solar powered aircon in the Audi S8 that keeps running after you switch your engine off? Or the electric boot close button on the inside of the Peugeot 607 (my friends got tired of that party trick, but I didn't!)? For me, it has to be the electric memory seat systems that store complete seat and mirror and steering wheel settings for multiple drivers.

  • Any - True Cost of Motoring. 5 Jul 2010 (Forum)
I strongly suspect many people do not know the true cost of running their car. The other evening I pulled into my drive when someone I know vaguely was walking by. He made the comment “You must be a rich man”! I queried this and he said “To put the petrol in that car”.
  • Nissan D21 Pickup - Random power loss 8 Jun 2010 (Forum)
Yes I know its old, but its in good nick and its not done silly milage (about 130k). Now the engine runs sweet, it sounds fine and there is no black smoke or any signs of mechanical upset. However whilst driving along the power seems to vary quite a lot, its not too extreme, I can keep up with other traffic etc and there does not appear to be any pattern to it.

  • BMW 320D SPORT 2004 - BMW 320D SPORT-Noise when clutch is released 30 Apr 2010 (Forum)
I have a BMW 320D Sport (2004),  I bought it with about 60k on the clock ,  it now has 121k on it.  The car runs fine and I have had no problems with it except that around 100k I noticed a funny noise when the car is in neutral with the clutch released.  If I fully depress the clutch the sound disappears.
