• BMW - Buying a 2001 BMW, what are the catches?? 24 Dec 2008 (Forum)
  HI First post here, I am considering spending £3-4k on a automatic estate for driving up and down the motorway with family (3 of us are currently in a 3 door polo, I have not bought a car in a LONG time). I am looking for something enjoyable and have been considering BMW 3 or 5 series. What should I be looking out for with these models, most in my price range are 2000-2003 reg and have 100,000+ miles on them. How many miles will they do in total? Are there serious costs i could be looking at for servicing with this mileage?

  Has anybody else heard of such a thing on these cars i.e, could this be a common fault on this year or model of car? Also would anyone else know if BMW would be likely to meet costs etc under any 10/12 year corrosion warranty that should come with the car when new. He is the second owner of the car and prior to him buying, the car had full BMW service history, although not for the past 2 yrs.

  Hi, hope someone can help with this.... I now own a nearly new old shape BMW 330D auto which seems to use BMW longlife-01 oil. Handbook guards against anything else - no doubt as the oil is intended to last 15k miles or thereabouts. Does anyone know whether a direct equivalent oil is available through normal autospares retail outlets rather than the BMW dealer network where I am sure the cost for their branded oil will not be cheap!

  Seeing HJ's report on the Showroom4cars Top Ten and the prominence of BMW therein reminds me that the only BMW I have ever owned was a Dinky toy, given to me by a girlfriend in the late 1960s. At that time, I reckoned BMW were getting it dead right with lean, elegant, well engineered machines -- the 2002 par excellence.

  The driver's seatbelt on a 1999 model is very tight and seems to get tighter as the car is driven...any ideas?

  Owing to barievement I have been tasked by family to find out if anyone has the rough valuation of a bmw motorcycle. It has not been run in about 20 years. It has I think matching numbers. It's a 650cc. It's T registration  It has history on gov . UK of distorted frame.

  My BMW 320d handbrake light stays on even when the handbrake is down. The dashboard says 'braking system drive moderately' with the handbrake sign next to it, the brake pads need doing & it says that on the vehicle status so not sure if the dashboard message has anything to do with that?

  Interesting to see that BMW will no longer be selling cars to the UK police.  This follows on from fires, one fatal, in cars using the N57 engine.  Apparently, it's the police's fault for driving them wrong! The impatient among us no longer need to keep an eye out for X5s on the motorway.

  Hi, my husband died and left me with this BMW which is not the type of car I drive.  I want to sell it but am unsure where would be best to advertise. It has a year’s MOT but the paintwork does need some work. Mileage is 52,500.

  Hello, Was all set to buy a 1 series BMW convertible ( budget around 6-7k) when s mechanic friend warned me about the timing belt issues with the N47 engine. I have tried unsuccessfully to see if any of the convertibles of this vintage (58-61) do not have the engine with the issue?

   He said avoid the petrol because they were trouble, I'd not realised it was the BMW unit.  Think you will find that BMW used the Peugeot 1600 petrol in the Mini and the 116/316. BMW now use their own 3 cylinder petrol in these. Think you have just found the least knowledgeable Peugeot salesman in the land.

  I was looking for some info regarding the timing chain issues on the BMW n47 engines. From what I have read on forums the fault occurs on engines built between 07-09. Does anyone know if the fault is still as common in newer 520d's?  I am looking at buying a used 520d 2013 and was curious if the fault is still as common.

  I HAVE A BMW 318I SE 1.9 1999 MODEL WHEN THE CAR IS RUNNING STILL THE TEMP IS FINE. WHEN I DRIVE THE CAR IT STARTS TO OVERHEAT. AND LOOSES WATER I HAVE BLEDED THE COOLING SYSTEM. THE WATER PUMP IS NEW THE RADIATOR HAS A VERY MINOR LEAK.

  Hi all Looking for some inspiration please - BMW 320d E46 approx 100K miles on clock - wont start. New injectors put in as existing ones appeared to be leaking Pump has been taken out and checked - bar pressure is fine Electrics have been checked and new sensors put in just in case.
