BMW 3 Series Touring 320D Regn 2008 - Bridgestone Potenza tyre wear - RMD10

My first set of rear Potenza tyres did 32000 miles, the second 29000 and the third set has just been replaced at 11,000 miles and after 6 months. Same driver / owner / use. Has anybody else had this appalling experience? If it happens again it will certainly be farewell to Bridgestone and probalby to BMW.

So you got incredible mileage out of your first 2 sets of rear tyres and very poor milage out of the 3rd. Why blame BMW, its hardly their fault is it. I guess you are aware that OE tyres on BMW's are marked as unique to BMW, dont know what the difference is but could it be that the first 2 sets were OE spec and the 3rd just run of the mill Bridgestones. You have not said if the tyres are all the same model, different models from the same manufacturer perform differently, the rubber could have been much softer as could the construction. Have they all been run flats.

I'm not blaming anyone but I am interested if this is a common experience. All the tyres have been Potenzas so I don't think the BMW special argument works as they have been replaced once already. I don't see 30,000 miles as incredible - it's what I used to get out of Michelin Primacy on my last 3 litre Peugeot Coupe. The car is fast and torquey but it doesn't mean it is driven to use that power and torque. The real point is the change - that's what concerns me.

Have you checked for the obvious things like tracking?

With the runflats, I have also found it is critical to keep a close eye on tyre pressures. Runflat = you don't get any visual clues if pressure has suffered a bad drop. For example, if you have alloys that have become slightly porous with age, you can easily drop a few PSI over a couple of weeks - enough to impact on tyre wear.

11k is pretty normal for Bridgestone Potenzas. I'd be over the moon if I got 30+k out of Turanzas, which are considerably harder than the Potenzas.

If they're the RFT RE050A, they changed them a little while ago, I think something to do with sidewalls and correcting issues with them splitting. Maybe the new ones don't last as long?

I used to get 6k out of the Potenza RE050 on the front of my diesel Astra (205-50/16)...

They are RFT 050A and I wondered if there has been a change to the composition. However, I changed the front tyres in December 2010 and they have done 20,000 miles already and have 6mm left so it is all really odd. I check the pressures, I had the tracking checked when the last set of back tyres was fitted and the wear was absolutely even across the tread. Finally I don't drive like a lunatic!

As you have 2010 tyres and 2011 tyres check the wear rate figure on the sidewalls and see if they are the same.

The suspension on BMWs is critical any wear in the myriad of components in the suspension array will cause the tyres to wear at an alarming rate. One look at the suspension set up and you will see all the adjustable points these are set up on the proper jig at BMW and if you have inadvertenly kerked a wheel you could have have thrown the tracking a mile out and until you know that all is correct on the suspension front then you will continue to wear tyre out at an alarming rate.

I don't know this one. What is the "wear rate figure" and where exactly is it"

I got pretty high rates of wear out of Potenza 050's on my Audi A4, but I have to say that I am sure that sometimes different batches of the same tyre have differing compound qualities or at least this seems to be what I've observed.

Also I think there is definately something in whether they are OE or just general supply tyres.
