  • New car chosen after much prevarication! 22 Dec 2005 (Forum)
We were also impressed with the Volvo S40 2.4. We didn't like the Saab 9-3 (hideous cabin) or the 2.2D X-Type (diesel clatter). We didn't drive the 3-Series because the dealer was extremely unhelpful and I wasn't very impressed with the cabin - very cheap and nasty unless you spent quite a lot extra, I thought. When will HJ drive the Lexus, I wonder?
  • Buying Used - "attitude indicators" 14 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Is it worth appraising how many sets of tyres, brakes, clutches etc a car has been through given its mileage - to give some indication of how it's been driven? If buying privately, would you make an appraisal of the owner's driving style / other car(s)- I suppose this could be easily moderated for the test drive? Finally, do you reckon there's any mileage in "one lady owner" cars? Assuming that they are indeed one lady owner (and not "plus one 17 year old son" is the car likely to be in better nick?

Any other comments (and no, you can't become my MiL!) TIA -- Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
  • Car insurance problem 3 Nov 2005 (Forum)
The thing is I use the Williams for track days but I would like the oportunity since its road legal to drive it on the road ever now and again and to test it before track days. However going for two policies is my only option it seems and thats £2k which I'm fed up of paying. I looked at a policy which would let me drive other cars 3rd party but they have all now removed this or you have to be over 25 (I'm 23).
  • VW Dealers..useless or uninterested? 29 Sep 2005 (Forum)
"No problem sir, 24 hour test drive, we can arrange that, give me a hour to organise & I'll phone you back to arrange details" - that was 2 days ago, nothing since. Tried another dealer earlier in the week, could only take it out for 24 hours if I arranged my own insurance, but she would still have to clear it with the sales manager - again never received another call from them!
  • The "French" fight back. 20 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I experienced the following breakdowns with them: - Cortina 2 broken fan belts. Sierra 1 3 broken drive belts, 1 broken gearbox, 1 broken starter motor. Sierra 2 2 broken drive belts, 1 broken clutch cable, 1 broken brake vacuum pump. Sierra 3 1 faulty fuel gauge, causing me to run out of fuel.
  • Gardens...going....going.....gone? 6 Sep 2005 (Forum)
With most of my neighbours having two or three cars, parking was becoming a nightmare. So, we had the old crazy pave job done to get two cars on drive and one out front. Made an effort at greenery by having a curved bed with green stuff in it and a couple of evergreen tree things. But, looking down my road, its all a bit messy. Some have laid loose gravel which has decanted into the road and on the pavement, one has simply concreted (not very well)and painted it tile red, some have got cars longer than their drive, so hang over the pavement.
  • I got my new car! 23 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Picked it up yesterday (sorry, that's why I missed the NW meet people) from Shropshire, which meant quite a drive but my god it was worth it. Very, very nice car, and the bit that I'm most devastated about is that there currently isn't anything on the market that I could imagine replacing it with in 4 or 5 years time, I'm going to have to take extra special care of it as I doubt I'll be able to get another like it!
  • "classic" Mercedes - Sell or keep ?? 8 Jul 2005 (Forum)
The oldest is a W123 230E saloon, automatic from 1984,B registration, this was owned by a family friend from 1988 and so its history is known, and it has been fitted with a brand new engine around 4 years ago at a cost of over £1000.00 It is in almost perfect condition, requiring a couple of small bits of rust treating to make perfect. it seems to drive very well indeed and feels as though there is plenty of life left in it. The second car is a 260 E saloon automatic, from 1988, it is also in very good order but needs a new motor in one electric window, this also drives very well and has a very powerful smooth engine which gives very good performance when needed.

Not like me to moan about a Beemer is it ? SWMBO remains to be convinced as well. Very rarely left a test drive feeling so flat.
  • Comedic driving 15 Mar 2005 (Forum)
I saw an amusing sight yesterday. A 1 litre fiat panda with a canoe on the roof trying to intimidate an HGV! We were on an A road going towards the M5...
  • Car Insurance Question 9 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Here's an example. If a car is insured, taxed and MOTd. Then a month later the owner for some reason can't drive and cancels his insurance.Does my fully comp insurance cover me to drive that car with third party cover? I've got a bet on the answer to this. I've had a look round and I just can't make out who is right.

With China and India quickly becoming fully-fledged car-owning societies the demand for oil will go up, hastening the depletion of fossil fuel reserves. Oh, and what about Jesus's car - that was to do with an evengelistic preacher who drives a Prius! cheers, Sofa Spud
  • Traffic Police numbers down 16 Jan 2005 (Forum)
In another thread, Stuartli said "...could/will result in a penalty if it is witnessed by a police officer." Well, in this morning's Telegraph, in an article about drink driving, the comment was made that independent figures out yesterday show thatthe number of traffic Police has declined by one third over the past 8 years as road policing has moved towards camera based enforcement.

also when getting into the car today I inadvertantly put my foot hard down onto the accelerator ( prob up to about 4000 rpm) and when the engine went back to tickover the noise had gone. However after driving about 5 miles the rattle re- appeared. I have checked the auxillary crankshaft pulley and it looks solid enough. any thoughts, could it be the cam belt tensioners. the noise is loud. however the drives a1 help
  • Wheeltrims 15 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Driving along tonight and there is a nice bouncy plasticy noise and yes, you guessed it, when I stop I find the trim missing. Rant aside, this means I now need a new set of trims. (You could argue that as it was damaged by the woman who scraped along the car it should have been changed as part of the claim, but they said they couldn't change it as it wasn't a standard Toyota one....)
  • Car car car car car trouble ............ 26 Sep 2004 (Forum)
I was driving home in my car (conveniently) last week, and I thought the car was driving a bit "funny". When I got home (12 miles) I noticed that the rear driver wheel was flat. And red hot. I pumped it up (after letting it cool down) and went to the local tyre place and bought 2 new (budget) tyres for the back.
  • Autobahn verses motorway 16 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Just returned from Germany where I had a chance to drive from Berlin to Frankfurt - 360 miles and back. It is quite interesting to note the diffences in driving compared to the UK. Firstly, the Germans are MUCH more disciplined when it comes to lane discipline and always always move over (and quickly too) for faster vehicles.
  • Drunk Driver 10 Aug 2004 (Forum)
I point out he\'s just sworn at a member of the public, in front of an 18 month old child and that I\'ll report him for conduct unbecoming. Plod get back in their car and drive off, with the copper who\'d had a look round my car laughing his head off. And the moral of the story for the police is.... Always check whether a car is left or right hand drive before breathalysing the guy in the passenger seat.
