  • Intimidation, what do i do? 15 Oct 2005 (Forum)
I will not be intimidated by anyone.. ever. Not in any form of life, working, driving, by a hoodie out shopping or whatever.. So how should i have dealt with this situation? Driving on a duel carriageway with roadworks, a single coned off lane that last for around 2 miles with nowhere else to go.
  • Car storage & insurance 26 Oct 2004 (Forum)
As suggested in my other New Thread of the day, my older daughter has grown out of the Fiesta and is planning to change cars. Bad timing really. Younger daughter is keen to drive but isn't 17 until next April. The Fiesta would be an ideal starter for her. So... Direct Line want £21+ a month TPFT if I keep it on my front drive (insured in my name). Then I could drive it occassionally to keep things moving...
  • Licence taken by French police 16 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Clapton can still drive in Britain, but he will have to recover his licence through a diplomatic route, police said. Has anyone else lost their licence this way in France? If so how long did it take to recover the licence?
  • stop-start driving from cold? advise? 27 Aug 2004 (Forum)
In hindsight, i should have just parked the car and walked back home for another cup of coffee! BUT, here\'s the rub... manaufacturers advise getting in the car and driving off staright away. Effectively this morning I was \'idling\' for 20 minutes! TWICE I turned the engine off, and restarted a few minutes later. Is this wise? What, under the circumstances, would be/have been the best course of action?
  • Passat 2001 Creaking Steering 26 May 2004 (Forum)
Where can I get the bits Eurocarpart and GSF dont list them on their sites, any ideas and cost? Would a worn drive belt for the PAS cause this? Should I stop driving it? What will happen worst case if say I drive 500 miles this weekend? Any help appreciated As always Mark
  • The Cost of Poor Driving 5 May 2004 (Forum)
I felt really chilled at the start of last week, and consequently for the first couple of days my driving style was different. I was sticking to 70 on the motorway and not pushing it to 80, and was accelerating gently from standstill and also when picking up speed. After a couple of days I noticed that there was a marked increase in my petrol consumption, so I carried on with the same style.
  • Hyundai Trajet impressions. 14 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Haven't had a test drive yet and do have some concerns about people carriers in general but does anyone out there have any views on whether a car like this would be a good long term bet? Drive the Deal quoted just under £13k for a new one and at this price it seems very good value for money.
  • My Citroen ZX sometimes won't start? 14 Nov 2003 (Forum)
It hasn't really done it all summer, but has started to do it again as the weather has turned a little colder. The problem is driving me made as I can't find out whats wrong with it. Why does unclipping and reconnecting the amplifier solve the problem? Can someone please help as I find it a bit worrying that the engine can just cut out on me whilst driving, but I can't see any way round it without it costing me a fortune at garage, to maybe not even have the problem resolved.
  • Power Steering seems Heavy 9 Sep 2003 (Forum)
The vehicle body size isn't that much bigger or heavier surely, but if that is the case then surely the PAS would make the car as 'light' as my current one to drive. I certainly don't want to drive a small car again. Is there a specific reason for the power steering seemingly heavier than a none PAS similar sized older car or is it just a sign of older and possibly knackered PAS?
  • Track/driving days 27 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Picking up on a strand from the skidpan thread, I thought it would be interesting to hear people's experiences/recommendations of track days and driving experiences, which can be a valuable way of both learning about your abilities and how best to apply them (never mind the opportunity to let off a bit of steam far from the madding crowd). I had a track day at Mallory Park a few years back which was great fund in saloons and a swift lesson in why-most-of-us-aren't-Michael Schumacher in Formula Fords.
  • Radiator losing water 19 May 2003 (Forum)
Hi everyone, I drive an F-reg Vauxhall Astra, which causes me no end of grief, being an old car and all. I threw a piston last year, so had the engine replaced with a G-reg 1.4 Cavalier engine. My radiator is 3 years old, and I've already had the water pump replaced this year when it packed up in October.
  • Advanced driving question 9 May 2003 (Forum)
What was worrying was the lack of any hard shoulder - the slip road just joined at 45 degrees - so it was potentially dangerous. As it was I feel my safety was compromised by this plonker. What do you advanced driving gurus reckon I should have done? My guess is: move to lane 2 and ignore the inevitable hooting and light flashing. Thanks. Leif. PS: saw an expensive BMW convertible steaming down the M4 at 100 mph in lane 3, then dart across to lane 1, undertake some cars, then dart back out to lane 3.
  • Diesel value with short trips ? 13 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Firstly, I am considering changing to a diesel but a friend who was in the motor business for over 40 years has made me think again due to the mileage and the pattern of my driving. I currently drive a Merc. 320 Estate petrol. Due to retire soon and need a car cheaper to run as I will be paying the bills - hence the diesel. I will cover 6,000 to 7,000 miles a year, about 60/70% of the mileage will be on short runs of a few miles and my mate reckons that I will not get the economy due to the volume of these short runs.
  • Postcard from NZ 11 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Hi all, Couldn't travel to the other side of the globe and not post a message (keeping the international aspect of HJ's forum alive!) Couple of things I've noticed about the cars here : Everyone drives Japanese stuff, it all looks the same, and the ones I've driven all drive the same too. I've not really ever been a fan of Japanese cars, but they get the job done surprising well and don't tax you when driving 100s of Kms.
  • Oil loss 21 Nov 2001 (Forum)
Anyway, i've given as much info as possible - can anyone explain the sudden increase in leakage, and the smoke from the bonnet? The car is still driving really well. A hard 200 mile drive the other day didn't cause any more oil loss than in daily driving. All I can think of is that it seems to be since i had the plugs and leads replaced a week or so ago.
  • Mazda MX-6 12 Apr 2001 (Forum)
I currently drive a mazda mx-6 (as the subject indicates) and find it a very fun drive (although the cabin is a bit rattly) on a 94M with 77k. I have read the manual and spec which states that it is a 60 litre fuel tank.
  • Hic... - Moving a car while intoxicated. 11 Jun 2024 (Forum)
Friend refused as had a few drinks for lunch. "You won't get your bins emptied " " I've been drinking can't drive..." I agree he was totally right to not move it. no one else insured to drive it.
  • Motorway slip road speed limit 4 Apr 2024 (Forum)
Once I approached the motorway, I saw all people driving at 60-70mph. Could I ask if the speed limit is only for the slip road? And at what speed should I merge to motorway. Thanks for helping

When will the DVLA be up to date with medical paper applications?
  • Car Insurance UK 25 Jan 2022 (Forum)
General question, for anyone who drives and has made an insurance claim for an incident not your fault. Would that shoot up my premium on renewal? I drive forward into a parking spot in a narrow road and was indicating to park. I wasn't as close to the curb as could be and left my indicator on and a car facing me forced its way forward hitting my wing mirror and drove off before giving me a chance to reverse closer parrelel to the curb.
