had a look at a few of the older pages all seem to tell me how to start it but not fix it. Problem bein car starts first time, then every couple of weeks will cut out when driving for no apparent reason. it turns over as normal cuts out on start. I am assuming its somethin fuel related not the pump as it seems fine. im thinkin maybe the carb, plugs are only a few month old so not them neither, its a 1995 1.1 azura if that helps cheers guys

  • Peugeot 306 1.9 Diesel Turbo - Catalytic 18 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Mates car has a broken Cat matrix. On my 406 2.1TD a couple of years ago, same happened to me (After 180,000m) The garage just rodded out the old cat, leaving an empty chamber. No real problems but was slightly more bassy noise.

  • Cheap turbocharger (any make) 9 May 2005 (Forum)
I'm planning to build a DIY jet turbine engine this summer in the break from Uni, and while it's a fundamentally simple concept I'm assuming that picking up a turbo in relatively good condition for a low price is going to be difficult. I'm not averse to taking a toolkit to a scrapyard and pulling one off an old car, until I've got it off will have no idea of it's condition. Is there anywhere that takes turbos that while in good condition have no use and would be willing to flog one on cheap to me?
  • room with a view 8 Apr 2005 (Forum)
I particularly resent (as a driver) high rear screen sills, e.g. Seat Leon, which make reversing more hazardous. Which other cars suffer in this way?
  • Cambelt Question 22 Jan 2005 (Forum)
I'm wondering whether to get the cambelt changed on my passat. I was looking through some old receipts for the car (not long before I bought it), and saw one listing the following: Tension Roller V Belt - £75.00 Drive Belt - 4 pK 850 - £5.00 Timing Belt - £17.00 Labour - £80.00 Are 'timing belt' and cambelt the same thing?
  • Peug 309D many miles 15 Nov 2004 (Forum)
My car has done 165000 miles I haven't had it from new but have the old receipts. I acquired it at 98000 miles. Beside the things that come up on MOT I was just wondering what could start packing up soon.
  • Ford key question 23 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Today my key decides that it's too worn to work anymore, so I use the red one instead for now. Now as the old key is more or less redundant, I thought I'd take it apart. I found a little glass tube with a little copper coil and what looked like a couple of diodes in it. The car still starts without this little contraption in the key, so what is it supposed to do ?
  • Who's got the hump then? 10 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Given it's the Middle East as well, it brings to mind that old one about a camel being a horse designed by a committee......

  • Which new Primera? 6 May 2004 (Forum)
My dad has been offered a good deal to upgrade his two year old Primera to a brand new one. His current car is the 2.0 petrol, but he now has a choice between the 1.8 petrol and 2.2 diesel. The published figures and HJ's roadtest imply the diesel is the one to pick, and I suspect it might suit his low revs driving style.
  • What, no snow circus this winter? 16 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Nothing serious you understand, no basis for Schadenfreude , just good entertaining stuff. I wonder if lessons were learned? The lesson I learned (yep, the 'old blowoff' allegation is true): I left my car in the garage. Oz (as was)
  • Focus - rear wheel bearings ? 8 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Wife's Focus, 3 yrs old, 26K miles has started making a whining noise from the rear end. This rises and decreases in volume with road wheel speed. I've checked under car for trapped debris / loose lines etc. to no avail. I've come to the conclusion it's likely to be one / both rear wheel bearings.
  • Clarkson on Diesels 10 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Any adverse comment about diesel cars seems to be regarded as heresy by many in the Backroom. Mention of Jeremy Clarkson is also guaranteed to get adverse reaction in this forum. Therefore his report on the BMW 530d in today's Sunday Times will upset both camps.
  • Blocked washer jets 7 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Is the root cause of the problem anything to do with the washer fluid I use? ~ approx 10% (stronger in the depth of winter) Halfords own brand. The car is 4.5 years old so is the problem now inevitable? I know that algae can breed in my bottle of diluted product if it is continually left in daylight. -- L'escargot by name, but not by nature.
  • Dead Battery under Warranty 22 Nov 2003 (Forum)
I had my first experience of 'modern' sudden & total battery failure the other day. As it was a 36mth warranty 'Car Jack' (exide) and just 26mths old I took it back to Makro, with the receipt. I was half prepared for them to say something about a proportional refund, but they swapped it without question. Only thing was, the price has now increased by £2.35, and they charged me this on the exchange.
  • Clonking noise on Corolla vvti brakes... 29 Aug 2003 (Forum)
My 2000 (old shape) Corolla recently had a seized front brake disc - corrosion had 'welded' the pad to the disc, according to the RAC man who fixed it - which he did by sanding the disc down. Only problem now is that I think the corrosion spot is still there - the car sounds like something is clonking at the front - but isn't apparent if you rev the engine with the clutch out.
