Electric car technology 21 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Petrol and diesel fuel prices are set to soar. But hope is on the horizon as the progress towards electric cars is accelerating. Most car manufacturers are hurrying to make sure that they are not left behind. -
Toyota Carina E - How to keep a 15yr old car running 21 Dec 2011 (Forum)

Could i replace front window motor with one from the rear? Hopefully i'll get a haynes for christmas... -
Mercedes Benz C-Class W203 (2000 - 2007) - 03 2.0 Engine misfire after 20 seconds at tickover 16 Sep 2011 (Forum)
I telephoned the garage, who said "thats the cheapest thing we can do, rebook the car in and we will now look for another fault" They have inspected the plugs, injector jets, fuel pump, filters etc, any ideas please? Thanks slt -
Renault Clio II Petrol - 16 V Extreme 53 - Renault Clio - loss of power, exhaust popping 31 Aug 2011 (Forum)
My second mechanic changed-: - all spark plugs - coil pack and leads - one of the fuel injectors The emissions warning light then intermittently appeared (flashing) and tended to come on with high revs and/or over 20/30mph. The third mechanic read the fault codes which gave the fault as on spakr plug/lead number 4 (apologies for the non-technical language). -
Audi A6 Saloon - Oil Light 19 May 2011 (Forum)
V6 Engine runs smoothly, sounds as good as a diesel ever does, no oil leaks at all, oil level is always at max on the dip stick, oil changed using correct grade regularly and oil is acceptably clean on a spot test, steady oil temp on gauge when running, fuel economy is as good as ever, all fluid levels are OK and no sign or smell of anything abnormally hot, turbocharger can be heard spinning down sweetly when engine is turned off. How does the sensor transmit to the ECU is it an analogue voltage or digital signal, could something be interfering with it? -
Honda Jazz - Honda Jazz '07-'08 CVT or Manual for reliability? 23 Oct 2010 (Forum)
I'm seriously looking at purchasing a Honda Jazz, hopefully the last of the previous model. I was looking at Civics but grim cutbacks at work mean fuel economy is going to be paramount now, as will long term reliability. I've been a bit put off by reports on here about gearbox problems on manual Jazz models. I wondered if getting a CVT-7 model would sidestep this issue.? -

Choosing a four wheel drive 4x4 - for school runs 28 May 2010 (Forum)
The step after that would be twin - in line rear axles. After dropping the child at school, the middle pair could be raised off the road to save fuel. Although prestige would be gained by being able to show that it could be afforded to keep them down. Talk along the school drive would be along the lines of `Mine`s a 32 nutter` - meaning nuts per wheel - maybe. -
Renault Clio 1 Petrol RT 1.4 - Misfire and general roughness 18 Apr 2010 (Forum)
It then repeats, and sounds very much like the engine is about to die. Ive recently done an oil change, changed the air filter and fuel filter, which has improved it EVER so slightly, but its still doing it. I took the plugs out to check the gaps and they are all ok, though i did notice that the porcelain centre of all of the plugs were light brown/white, which as far as i know is ideal, so all look fine, though they could maybe do with a change. -
BMW E30 318IS - Upgrades? 17 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Having now had 18 months of faultless and very enjoyable driving out of my ageing 318IS (16valve M42 engine) I have decided, rather than swapping up to a six-cylinder model with asscoiated fuel, insurance and labour costs, to keep it and spend a bit of cash on it. I have just bought a set of 17inch Kahn RSR wheels (I'm 22 come on!) which I love and will fit them in a couple of weeks - Question is do I have to adjust any of the suspension set up/geometry for these larger wheels? -
Ford Ka (2008 - ) - First month with my KA 19 Nov 2009 (Forum)
3 Female fitting of seat belt well buried between seat and centre console, would be better with an extension to lift it up a bit 4. Dipped beam a bit dim on country roads 5. Poor fuel consumption, getting about 48 mpg on the computer, mimsing around! 6. Dashboard air vents give a good volume of air thru the centre vents but very little to the ones at the outer ends which would deal with the 1/4 lights 7. -
Campervan - Help please 31 Oct 2009 (Forum)
We are novices and would welcome any advice. What we think we know: ? 2.3litre or bigger diesel engine (fuel economy is important to us) ? Needs to be 16-21ft (want to access some more remote places) ? Probably 2001 or newer (We are told that breakdown cover is difficult/expensive to come by for vehicles over 10 years old) ? -
Vauxhall Astra G Coupe/Convertible (2000 - 2004) - 03 1.8 High emissions 3 Oct 2009 (Forum)
The error code is P0170 & P0420 Please correct me if i'm wrong but does the first code relate to the fuel mx and the second to the CAT?? So i'm now left with a rather large hole in my pocket and yet my car is still running rich. What could be the problem given what i've replaced? Your advice would be much appreciated. -
Mitsubishi Colt (2009 - ) - Diesel vs. petrol economy 1 Oct 2009 (Forum)
kid=7&pid=54&st=6 http://www.ktb.co.id/pdf/54.pdf Cost new: £5,600 It would be used to carry large loads of vegetables The cost of petrol is £0.39/litre, and diesel £0.36/litre. Although this might seem cheap by British standards, fuel costs would actually form a significant part of running costs. Typical load would be a 60 mile journey laden with a few hundreds of kilos of veg passing through various villages (plenty of braking to avoid potholes,goats,etc.). -
Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 01 2.0 starting problem 306 2.0 HDI 27 Sep 2009 (Forum)
ive had all the same problems as everyone else on here with the car just randomly not starting over a period of a couple of weeks. after reading a few forums on here i narrowed the problem down to the low pressure fuel pump in the tank which was making no noise and not kicking in on the second turn of the ignition. with a multi meter on the electrical plug feeding the pump i was reading 10v which i just assumed was down from 12v as the battery may be a little flat due to me trying to start the car so many times. i bought a new pump and upon fitting i realised that this pump was not working either. i then tried a 12v battery accross the +/- terminals of old pump and it fired up straight away. with old pump back in i tried starting the car with the 12v battery connected to the pump, started ok! -
Recommend a new car for my Mum... (please) 27 Jul 2009 (Forum)
The things that she misses about her current car are electric windows and central locking. The boot doesn't have to be huge as it's only shopping that will be carried in it. Fuel economy should be good but isn't the absolute priority as she will only do about 3K miles per year at most. What is the cheapest new 3 door hatchback with electric windows and central locking? So far, I think it may be the Chevrolet Matiz. -
Vauxhall Zafira A (1999 - 2005) - 05 2.0 Oil leak around Turbo 7 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Hi i recently had a sevice at Vauxhall and when i picked the car up the guy asked me if i ever had problems starting my 05 2.0 DTi SRi. I said no never. When i asked why he said as they had found oil in the fuel filter but as i had no problem it was ok. He also then noted that there was a slight oil leak around the pipe to the turbo. i had noticed this but it was very slight and i had not noticed any performance issues or turbo problem. -
Honda Accord UK (1998 - 2003) - 00 2.0i stalls at junctions and when changing gear 4 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Problem is of course stalled motor = no power steering or brake assist, scary when just coming to a junction/island etc. Various US web sites suggest cleaning the Idle Air Control Valve out, or using higher octane fuel, putting in injector cleaning stuff in the petrol (STP) etc etc Has any one solved this problem before or any bright ideas please, as I am fed up of spending cash at dealers who cant identify the problem or fix it for me Thanks DavidB -
Current trends reduces new car desirability? 3 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Don't get me wrong, a bit of inheritance or a lottery win, would have an Aston Martin of some sort and a Jag XF, no problems, but once back in the real world, anything sub 30K doesn't really interest me and I can't afford anything more than 30K. I'm wondering whether it's the fact that everything nowadays is such a compromise i.e. fuel costs have made V8's and V6's a no-no unless you're doing seriously limited mileage and/or the new tax classes.. a diesel is practical but boring, so for the first time if i can't get what I want, i'm not prepared to take a big dive on depreciation etc, so i'll keep what i've got I do spend more than is probably prudent keeping my 9 yr old car in tip top condition (just had both bumpers re-sprayed re minor parking scrapes), but have never been anywhere near to being a champion of bangernomics what's happening to me? -
Driving in Cornwall 23 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Lets just say my misses demonstrated her displeasure :-) All that said though, it is a place that small cars do make sense towns and villages are tight, parking spaces small and the increased fuel consumption you get from virtually always either driving up or down hill make a huge amount of sense. I was amazed at the speed that buses travelled at - I could hardly keep up with some of them and I wasnt crawling along either.
