Do you engage gear , then turn the car on?? 19 Jul 2008 (Forum)
one of my neighbours has always driven off as they have turned the car on whereas, i always wait for engine lights to go off, then start the car, then give it 5/10 seconds, then drive off i get the impression they are in gear and moving and turning on at roughly the same time, is this good practice or not? i like to get oil flowing 1st.. and they have needed 2 new gearbox's in their last two cars, how many others on here have the same driving habits? -
Will hands free phones be banned? 29 Jun 2008 (Forum)
So will this result in a) no change b) an outright ban on making and receiving phone calls whilst driving c) manufacturers ceasing to provide factory fitted hands free phone equipment in cars -
Ever seen an Audi police car? 23 Apr 2008 (Forum)
In all my time on the road , I can't recall seeing the BIB using an Audi, even the unmarked cars they seem to increasingly use. Do they have them in your area, is it they lack ability? Can't be down to cost as they all seem drive Mercs and Beemers round here. I expect one day to see the local CPSO driving around in a drop top Bentley. See a new A4 today, looks just like the old one except they've ruined the rear end. -
Miles per gallon query 18 Jan 2008 (Forum)
but I've heard that modern petrol cars will now use no petrol when the car is just rolling. Is that true ? What is the most fuel efficient way to drive down a steep hill ? 'Drive' down it, or roll down it, with the clutch depressed, or not ? Cheers ! -
What purpose a transmission tunnel? 15 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Why do front wheel drive cars need a transmission tunnel in the rear especially? There is no drive shaft. The exhaust does not run through it. Neither do electrics. And the bit of small-bore pipework that does, does not need a semi-circular cavity of 6 or 8 inches across! -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - Clutch snatching 13 Jan 2008 (Forum)
I've been driving for over 10 years, including various vehicles from work without any problems. I recently acquired a Mondeo III but, can't get used to the clutch!! it stalls very easily when setting off, it needs at least 2000 revs, and changing gear is as smooth as driving over a speed bump unless I ride the clutch. -
Low flying wheelie bins - who's responsible? 10 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Driving home last night in a downpour of sleet and high winds (and some of the best sheet lightning I've ever seen!) an empty wheelie bin standing at the end of a Farm drive was suddenly picked up by the wind and flew across the road inches in front of me. -

House price vs car price 9 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Yet, driving a 15-yr old banger on motorways at 90 mph is even more dangerous for their children! Why there is so much public apathy towards cars? -
Ford Mondeo II (1996 - 2000) - remote central locking - possibly a handy tip 25 Oct 2007 (Forum)
I have tried various "fixes" to no avail, but this worked for me. Disconnect the green connector on the driver's side near the ECU. Start the car and drive the car for approx 30 minutes. At the end of the drive with the engine still running reconnect the green connector. Turn off the engine, remove the key and try locking the car remotely. -
Do you carry your V5 with you? 5 Sep 2007 (Forum)
I don't suppose you do. So what when you're away from home and your car is towed - and you have to produce driving licence, V5 and proof of address. Westminster (see previous thread) didn't seem to care too much when they towed my friend's car; despite giving a long list of required documents - but she had her driving licence with her. -
Redline and into D - what happens next? 14 May 2007 (Forum)
It's Friday and my boredom at work has got me thinking. I'm just curious, what would happen if I was to redline my supra (autobox) and then put it into drive? I can think of three possible outcomes: 1 - Something breaks in the gearbox, although I'm not sure what, gears or clutches? Would the torque converter fail? 2 - Failure in the drive train, either the diff or UVs 3 - Two smoking tyres! -

Xantia Auto Gearbox Problem 6 Dec 2006 (Forum)
It starts fine, suspension lifts to normal height fine BUT it always sticks in 1st gear for too long (in Drive) and will eventually drop into 2nd, then straight into 3rd as the revs have hit about 5000 and it sounds like the exhaust is gonna fall off! A Citroen dealer advised that the gearbox needs to be warmed up sufficiently before driving off, but even after wasting 10 mins sitting still, it still happens every day. -
Quickest/most cost effective route ? 4 Nov 2006 (Forum)
I am thinking of spending a week in Centre Parcs in Westerhoven near Eindhoven in the Netherlands and was wondering where would be the best place to cross the channel ? Calais and drive across, or cross the channel to a point closer to the Netherlands ? It's less than 3hr from Calais so not sure how much a longer ferry crossing would take against the 3 hr drive ? Anyone ever done this sort of journey before, what's the most time effetive and cost effective route ? -

1993 Fiesta1.1 engine revving at idle? 14 Jun 2006 (Forum)
We have just bought a CFI fiesta 1.1 1993 with a genuine 21800 miles from new.It drives as new but has an intermittent fault. The car occasionally 'drives itself', lifting your foot off the throttle doesnt slow the car, and if you dip the clutch the engine is racing. Sometimes when you stop at a junction it will be racing, sometimes the revs surge violently up and down before settling. -
£6 billion road improvements? 22 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Anyway, even if they do widen the motorways, how many lanes would actually get used then? When I was taught to drive (1971), the idea was that one drives on the left, and only uses the other lanes for overtaking. -
Vaux Combo (new) steering rack failed. 11 Feb 2006 (Forum)
My mate drives an 03 Vauxhall Combo van for work (15,000 miles on it) He was complaining of a clonk from the suspension, and it got so bad he called out the AA who diagnosed the steering rack had failed and that "it wasnt safe to drive any distance in".
