  • gap between brake and gas pedal 25 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Right, there I am thinking I've got meself a safe, comfortable car for the price of a new Almera. Volvo S80, and it is lovely to drive around. However, now that I'm driving it for longer periods, I noticed something potentially unsafe!!!!!!! It's and auto, and when I press the brake pedal, the edge of my shoe sometimes is almost touching the left edge of the gas pedal.
  • Dyslexia & reaction times 5 Feb 2005 (Forum)
In the rural drive, the signs appeared directly ahead, while in the city they appeared in a variety of places. The six dyslexic drivers took on average 0.13 seconds longer to react during the rural drive than the non-dyslexic controls and were 0.19 seconds slower in the city, where the simulated environment was more complex.
  • Liverpool to Rome - the options 29 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Hence, we've always been to Scotland or Cornwall but now it's time for a change. So it's looking like we'll have to drive there. I don't mind as Dad and I will share the driving but we could do with some advice on destinations to stop pver, general routes to take. The original plan was to boat it to Spain (Santander to be precise) and drive from there, to Italy.
  • Peugeot 306DT high coolant pressure 10 Jan 2005 (Forum)
The pressure cap seems secure enough, so I'm assuming the head gasket is on its way out. The car seems to drive fine otherwise with no loss of power and the temperature never goes much above 80deg when driving normally. I've never let the car overheat and I've had the cooling system flushed and coolant changed twice in the 2 years I've had the car I'm aware that head gasket failures are common on the 1905cc XUD engine so I've got a horrible feeling that's what it is.
  • MB auto gearbox 24 Aug 2004 (Forum)
I floored the accelerator from a fairly low speed, the revs. went round to the red line, just as though the gearbox had slipped into neutral. As the car slowed,I tried a couple of times to drive on, but there was no drive at all. I stopped the car, fiddled with the gear lever, put it into drive and the car drove away normally and since then has behaved normally - I haven't tried flooring the throttle since then, though.
  • Classic bad driving 15 Mar 2004 (Forum)
I doubt any of them had any idea of the danger they , and other road-users had been exposed to . After all, driving is just what we do between the important bits of the day
  • Desire 25 Feb 2004 (Forum)
We youngsters were always mightily impressed with both cars and the women. Well he is now in his 70s, certainly not impoverished, but sedately drives a little hatchback with his fourth(I think) wife. I asked him recently if he didn't miss all the exciting cars he used to drive. He said it was the motoring equivalent of impotency and quoted George Melly who famously said that losing his sex drive was like being untethered from a wild beast!
  • Me-first driving 8 Aug 2003 (Forum)
After reading a few of the other threads I had this thought... Personally I find the growing me-first attitude on the roads encouraging. I was driving on a road the other day and a single queue of traffic threaded back for at least a mile and half. Another straight on lane empty (signs saying it closed in half mile or something etc). Illogical.

Hi, I'm trying to buy a replacement car, and want to try and find a good private example. I have called my insurance company (elephant) to ask to have my policy ammended, but they refuse to do it. elephant amusingly suggested i ask any seller i visit that they put me on their policy so that i can drive the car!
  • Overheating Golf GTD???? 8 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Having said that though, when I investigated under the bonet after the test drive, there was a lot of hissing etc from the general direction of the water reservoir. Any thoughts? As always, your help and advice is most welcome. Cheers Rob "Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast."
  • Diesel driving characteristics 12 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I am fairly new to diesel, having got a Seat Alhambra TDi a couple of months ago, and have had time to consider the characteristics of the engine. The good Effortless cruising and overtaking Blinding economy The bad Urban driving. Before I got a diesel I was led to understand that the huge torque pulled you in pretty much any gear. Where we live is heavy on roundabouts, and it seems pretty easy to get stuck in a the wrong gear with no power.
