I have just fitted new 16 valves and head gasket to my 1.6 16 valve astra sxi on 51 reg. i have fitted a new cambelt however when i attempt to start the car, the exhaust gases are coming through the air box which has totally confused me and the car will not run. i am getting 175 on each pot through the pressure tester so there is good compression on all 4 pots. the only thing i can think of is that the cams are the wrong way round. can anyone offer me advice cheers

hi all, i have a problem with my 04 citroen c8 2.0 16v hdi. i rebuilt the complete engine as it was in a flood. i started it and it started first time which i was very pleased about. but now what happens is when i start it, it runs fine but after 2 minutes it will start to misfire and give smoke which smells strong and looks white in colour. ive eliminated the anti pollution filter by removing it.but the smoke and misfire still persists.the smoke use to occur before engine rebuild aswell. if theres anyone here who is a technician please let me know.
  • Toyota Auris (2007 - ) - 07 2.0 Temporary power steering failure 9 Apr 2009 (Forum)
After a 60 mile run Iparked up for approx 30 mins. When I started the car to drive off the PS light remained on and the power steering did not work. I switched off and tried again 2 or 3 times with no result. I rang the R.A.C. and while waiting for recovery I had to move the car forward a couple of feet to get in the boot.

  • Vauxhall Astra F (1991 - 1998) - 93 1.4 Clutch or gearbox??? 16 Mar 2009 (Forum)
There is no sign of any clutch slip, but it's become difficult to engage 1st and 2nd gears when moving. When stationary (with or without the engine running) all gears engage without difficulty. When drivng however, the symptom appears. Strangely, once the engine has warmed up the fault gradually gets much less severe, but doesn't disappear entirely.
  • Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 1996 1.8 Starting problem,please help!! 15 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Hi all I have a 1.8 ADZ motor in my car, when I try to start it in the morning it winds over and over for ages then picks up on one cyl and fires up,runs a bit "fluffy" for a few seconds and all is well, drive it to work, leave all day, starts fine, leave over night and same problem. I have re-placed plugs ,dizzy cap, rotor, leads and the injector unit rubber gasket, which was split in two, which I though was the problem but no,still the same.
  • FIAT Bravo and Brava (1995 - 2002) - 00 1.8 Broken Cambelt 11 Mar 2009 (Forum)
We have had a mechanic round to change the cambelt & he then told us that it needed to have new valves fitted. This so far has now cost us £430.00 He is now telling us that as the car does not start/run (thru no fault of his as he doesn't have diagnostic facilities) it now needs some kind of sensor to get it going again, Can someone please advise, have we been ripped off????? Is the sensor needed or has the guy mucked up???
  • Number plate mystery 7 Mar 2009 (Forum)
The motoring link here is this, the daughter, Lorraine B**** ran an Audi TT with the number plate LOZZIE B..now I've racked the old brain cells and havn't come up with anything that might make this up...I tried a tenuous Irish LOZ 2138 but that doesn't come up on DVLA vehicle check. Any ideas ? Mind you, how stupid can you be ? If you're running a huge criminal scam, why pick a number which is going to alert every patrol car and anpr camera in the country ? Ted
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 96 1.25 Transmission Fluid - stalling when cold 4 Mar 2009 (Forum)
I have had a look in the book but it doesnt actually say which is always useful :) secondly - when the car first starts up in the morning, it stalls whenever it comes to a stop, the revs go to just below 1 and then it cuts out - after about 10 mins of driving it runs fine and it doesnt stall again for the rest of the day, just sort of kangaroo's a bit when slowing down anyone have any ideas as to what it could be? thanks alot leon
  • Direct injection petrol engines - do they work? 4 Mar 2009 (Forum)
This isn't a precursor to a buying decision, I'm just curious. On paper, these engines do seem to make a significant dent in diesel's running cost advantage, without the noise and truncated rev range compromises of even a good diesel engine. Cheers DP
  • Classic Gear programme 3 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Another managed to talk a lot but say nothing of interest despite driving an Aston Martin DB5 on winding mountain roads in the south of France - this culminated in her having a 'race' with a DBS which seemed to be run at about 50 mph with fast editing used to make it seem quicker. Most of the rest of the hour-long programme was taken up with repeated promotions for what was coming up later. Like a fool I stuck with it hoping that it would improve.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 98 1.9 TD Wandering to left 8 Feb 2009 (Forum)
One more thing - I think I have a glow plug out as it's a bit lumpy when started from cold and after a bit of revs it's fine. Will it do a lot of damage to run it like this until I can change them Cheers
  • BMW secondhand values 2 Feb 2009 (Forum)
I had the car for a little over 5 years and put 100,000 on the clock. As I had bought from a dealer at 13k the depreciation runs out at 10p/mile. The car had been trouble free all through out my ownership. The replacement? another E46,320d SE, an '05, one of the last before they were replaced by the E90. I bought privately at £6250 and the interesting aspect is that at 3+ years it has cost well under half the amount I paid in 2003 for my first BMW, though the mileage is quite a lot higher.
  • Repairing damage to tyre rim protector. 31 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I've just got back from a week away, and on checking the car before using it noticed that the front passenger side tyre has sustained damage to the rim protector strip that runs around the wheel. The damage is approximately 0.8 cm x 05cm and a mm or 2 deep and looks like the rim protector has been peeled back using a knife. I've checked the tyre pressures and its still spot on.
  • Subaru Impreza III (2008 -) - What's the Auto like? 26 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Any other notes or comments on the model would be appreciated, HJ does not appear to have test driven one. Competitive publications seem to be a bit down on the model, with reference to performance and running costs, so any real world experience would be handy. Cheers all.
  • How good an indicator is mileage of condition ? 22 Jan 2009 (Forum)
One has 50k miles, has been driven properly, has a full service history, one private owner and is in good condition. It has, however, been used mainly for domestic and commuting short run purposes primarily in heavy traffic. The other car has 150k miles, has been driven properly, has a full service history, one company owner and is also in good condition. It, conversely, has spent most of its life on the motorway.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 07 2.2 TDCI 155 Crankshaft pulley/timing chain ten 15 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I assume its ok to drive as normal until then... am I right..? I have noticed an odd unevenness to the way it runs, particularly obvious at a constant 2000rpm in 3rd. Any suggestions? Any observations?
  • Rover 400 (1995 - 1999) - 1997 1.6 Test for slipping torque converter please 14 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Putting your foot down increases the revs but negligible acceleration. Fuel consumption as about 28mpg on a long run. Any ideas for how to check if torque converter is faulty, it feels like the fluids are flowing too easily in it, the vanes not trapping the fluid well enough allowing the revs to increase but no acceleration.
