• He's finally gone and done it! 5 Feb 2010 (Forum)
  The scrappage deal proved too tempting so he has ditched his reliable M reg Rover 216 and also part ex'd the 2005 Fabia for a Hyundai I30. He's gone for the 1.4 petrol hatchback. I always thought he'd run the old Rover into the ground but a shiny new car with 5 year warranty was too big a carrot to resist. He picks it up on Thursday having ordered it a fortnight ago so at least he hasn't had to wait long.
• Nissan Primastar 9-seater (2006 - ) - 03 1.9 Van taking 4 attempts to start when cold 1 Feb 2010 (Forum)
  My 03 Primastar is slow to get going when its been sat overnight - it starts straight away but stalls after 2-3 seconds. This happens a couple of times, then usually on the 4th go it will start and keep running. Then when I first pull away I have no acceleration (can't get past 10mph) for about 20 seconds before it suddenly pulls off and drives fine for the rest of the day. Any ideas, as I am not mechanically minded and don't want to get fleeced (someone suggested glowplugs but also said they'd cost around £300 to replace?)

  hiya all my first time here i have a 406 and it started white smoking slightly then started getting worse the alternator belt snapped change that carried on driving it had injectors cleaned carried on driving the smoking started getting worse with a great big cloud of white smoke behind me parked the car up at home gone back to it now it wontt start iv checked the pump in the tank when i turn ignition on pump runs for 10-15 secs when the car is turning im nt getting no pressure up the common rail had any one any ideas cheers

  Not sure how to remove the air from fuel system from the engine side. I know glows are good etc as the car was running without problem, just a little fuel leak from the valve before I replaced it. Fuel cut off valve was replaced because it was leaking. Is there an easy way to get her started? Pumped the primer (tennis ball sized black pump left side of engine as you face it) which stays hard but refuses to start.

  Seemed to go into limp home mode so i kept it in 2nd for a while and it ran ok, felt like it was pulling back. Cooling fan on when i got home so left it running for 10 minutes to see if it does regeneration thing. Light still on. Fuel light on too just in case it's related. I've replaced the turbo, EGR valve and fuel sensor cap and had celenium topped up last month.

  I have had the thermostat replaced, which seems to have worked by bringing the temperature gauge down....BUT.... The water in my coolant tank is boiling over if the engine is left running for a little while 5-10 mins.....I have looked at the engine and when it gets too hot the fan motor kicks in but the fan does not spin/turn.... I have got another fan unit from the local scrap yard (I tested this whilst I was there and it works), but when In install this onto my car the same thing happens, the motor kicks in but the fan does not turn...

  hi all this is a strange one,i have a vauxhall vectra(B)sri 2.0l..the car has been running excellent since i bought it a few weeks ago. i got into the car tonight,bearing in mind all the snow we have got. driving down the road and i can hear a small knocking noise coming from the dashboard. earlier when i went out in it i put the traction control on because of the bad snow we have got. just wondering if anybody has any ideas. its not a loud noise,you can just about hear it. all ideas will be appreciated.thanks.

  I've recently been driving the wife's Focus and found that the AM reception is poor when the engine is running with all sorts of weird interference some of which sounds like some sort of digital interference as opposed to the normal sort of buzzing I've had in the past on old cars with poor aerials. She never uses AM but I like Radio 5 so is there any easy way of improving the reception?

  The queueing for fuel thread reminded me of a problem I had many years ago. I had a Renault 4 which would often misfire, and in freezing temperatures would not run. The misfire was caused by water in the fuel, and when a slug of water froze in the pipe from the tank to the pump, no go! It took me a long time to figure out how the water was getting into the tank.

  Does anyone have any suggestions as after 2 engine diagnostics and 2 repairs I think I may be back to square one! Just a note there doesnt seem to be anything wrong with the engine it appears to be running fine?? Really wish I hadnt bought the car in the first place!!!!!!!!!
• Volkswagen Passat (2005 - ) - 07 2.0 170 oil pump balancing shaft 20 Nov 2009 (Forum)
  I'm being told that my oil pump balancing shaft went yesterday and the VW garage are telling me that the engine needs stripped and replaced at £ 4k, as presumably it ceased up! The car was fine when the engine was running idle, but as soon as it moved the digital read out said stop. Helpfully the RAC got me to drive it about a bit and look to have knackered it in doing so! I've heard through some friends that the Passat has had some issues with faults on the oil pump balancing shafts recently and was wondering if any one has had experiance of this??

  Hi I have had my car now nearly six months and I have it running perfectly apart from one thing. When I try the heating system my windows steam up. The only way I can clear it is by using the Air Con and that makes my car freezing. Obviously its winter and I dont want to freeze everytime I drive.

  Will cost an arm and a leg to get it through it's next MOT which is due on 4th Feb, 2010. The road tax runs out on 31st January 2010. My car was 1st registered on 17th March 2010. So by the time 17th March 2010 comes around, my car will not be eligible for the £2000 scrappage allowance. I see that Nissan have lowered the age of their car scrappage from 10 years to 8 years if you scrap your car for a Nissan made in the UK ( I believe their factory is in Sunderland ).

  It seems that there is a loose connection somewhere however because the problem rectifies itself after a few minutes running I think this rules that out....... has anybody got any thoughts on this??? ... thanks

  When I switch the ignition on and wait about 5 seconds the oil light goes out without the engine running! Obviously not right. I suspected the oil pressure switch but not sure where it is,haynes manual is useless. My renault dialogys cd no longer works after I upgraded my computer so that's no help.

  She will possibly/probably need an exhaust, or moderate /extensive welding brake pipes? main light switch etc. But running like a clock, & I love her to bits ( & too mean to splash out on a new motor) I have booked her in for a "prelim" next Tue to get some idea of likely cost just with the Vat increase next year But the 2.5% extra on say £15,000 is only £375.00

  Hi all Not been on for a while but am just about to buy a Fiesta Zetec Climate 3 dr 1.4 cc 56 plate from a main ford dealer my question is I am looking for a small car cheap on running costs and rd tax , there price is £6,499 one owner and 25,000 miles on the clock. , I have saved 2,000 as the deposit and to keep my payments down to £112 a month , it only comes with 3 months warranty , to buy a warranty it for a year its another £350 but starts now not at the end of the 3 months , would it be worth it or are they no good. could sombody answer asap please.

  Since putting it in my local garage have now had new turbo, new clutch, new ?? valve which feeds the turbo, front brakes and discs. Now the car is actually running there is a very bad vibrating through out the car between 2 and 3 thousand revs. The car has only meant to have done 48,000 miles. It is not the engine mounts any advise please before I put a hammer to it.

  The Alhambra 1.9tdi has been extremely reliable over the past near four years. Though there is nearly 168, 000 miles on the clock, it has a full service history & runs fine. However, over the past few months, under conditions of low excelleration, l have noticed what l can best describe as "pinking" a metallic creaking until the car has reached a faster speed. Is this something that a diesel would do?

  Just bought a ZX 1.9 diesel (non turbo) with 81k on the clock. The engine runs beautifully and the temperature gauge shows engine operating at correct temperature. Whenever I open the window(s) at 30mph or more I get a strong smell of diesel exhaust fumes come into the cabin.
