N/a - Ex-wife had me as named driver and car now stolen 5 Jul 2011 (Forum)
She has asked for my driving licence as, unbeknown to me, she had me down as a named driver, married & living at her address, to quote: "to reduce her premiums substantially". I don't want to help her and thus become complicit in fraud and I don't want to run the risk of my suffering for her behaviour. However, if I tell her to get lost, she'll stop me seeing our kids until I toe her line. Can anyone help with the legal position here with the insurance & what is likely to happen if I tell her to get lost? -
why must we always have to pay? 1 Jul 2011 (Forum)
Firstly does it cost more in fuel and wasted time to stop traffic to collect it? Secondly, does the money collected cover the actual cost of running the crossing? My feeling is that this government could give us all a real feel good factor if they simply abolished these tolls. It surely wouldn't cost that much and the crossing must be paid for several times over by now. -
Suggestions: High MPGs, Cheap to Insure, Safe 28 Jun 2011 (Forum)
Hi, I am looking to buy a car that will be used 5 days a week, 2 x 60 mile trips a day. Pretty much straight run: motorway and major A roads (very few/infrequent stoppages). The main criteria I have are: - High MPGs - Good safety (4 or 5 star) - Low Insurance Other criteria would include good reliability and not exceeding ~£4k. -
Vauxhall Cavalier SRi - Where is the 16 point pin / block?? 22 Jun 2011 (Forum)
Hi All, I have an N Reg (1995) Cavalier SRi 16 valve. She is running a bit rough atm and is dying every now and then. The revs will suddenly drop and if you don't nail the throttle she just cuts out. The ECU light has come on, it does this sometimes but has normally reset itself next time you turn the engine on. -

Renault Megane - Cam belt incorrectly fitted 19 May 2011 (Forum)
I was told when I bought it that the cambelt had been replaced recently by an independant garage. I do not have the receipt, but was assured that it had been done. As the engine was running rough, I took it to a local renault specialist, who checked the cam timing. They said that the timing was out, & could not be fixed without replacing the cambelt again. Am I wrong to assume that if I was to get proof that the cambelt was done by this garage not so long ago that they would have to sort it out? -
Renault Megane II (57) - My windows are broke 15 May 2011 (Forum)
I Know there are a lot of these windows posts on here, but I could not find one, on here or google, that helped me. Me and my girlfriend have just bought a 1.5 Renault Megane Dynamique. It has run into an issue within its first week. From day 2 the front passenger window has played up. It worked at first, then it wouldnt go back up from a partially opened position. Then once it was up we didn't try it for a day. -
Rover 75 - Car stolen from mechanics yard 29 Mar 2011 (Forum)
It is probably complicated by the fact that there is a long standing friendship between the mechanic that runs the yard and my FIL as he has helped him maintain a procession of old Rovers over the years. In principle should the mechanics insurance cover this? And if so how would you go about any haggling where the insurance co inevitably(and probably rightly for a Rover 75 circa 2002) make a derisory offer? -
Ford Cmax 05 - Foul odour 26 Mar 2011 (Forum)
My first visit here so I'd appreciate the benefit of the joint wisdom that prevails. Not regularly, but on several occasions over the last year or two, with the car running, the interior has suddenly filled with a foul odour - rotten eggs/fish type - which almost necessitates vacating the car. It lingers for days despite air fresheners and open windows. It doesn't build up it just suddenly emits like a schoolyard stink bomb has been dropped. -
Ford Escort - ford escort help 12 Mar 2011 (Forum)
hey my father in law has just got a new car, ford escort 1.6 finesse. he picked the motor up drove 3 miles downt he road and it just cut out, called rac to help they said it could be something to do with having a blockage in the catolic converter/exhaust, after the rac man left he noticed a sticker on the visor saying it had a fuel cut off switch so he found that and pushed it. now it is starting but wont run he has felt the exhauset for cold spots n nothing it all hot, checked the lambda sensor, cleaner sark plusgs but cannot think off anything due to not really much about motors. is their anyone who could halp on this situation? -
Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 96 1.3 EFI 60PS uncontrolled engine revving. 9 Mar 2011 (Forum)
Also works the other way (e.g in neutral, no accelerator, start rolling down a hill and engine revs run away). Car also acts as if it has cruise control, e.g. drive at 30mph, foot off accelerator and car continues at that speed. I have heard said that the idle speed control valve could be a problem. Could this be the case and if so, is it an easy job? -
Good ground clearence what to buy? 6 Mar 2011 (Forum)
We currently run a Nissan X trial as the daily commuter vehicle, 60 mile round trip rural roads, which starts and ends with a mile of rough track. It's due for replacement and with rising fuel prices and both working in the NHS so on a pay freeze we need to find something a bit more economical, 4 wheel drive is not important as we have several Land Rovers if the going gets rough, ground clearence is, size is not overly important as there is usualy only the wife and I, but we are used to high-up vehciles, with a bit of comfort and good drivabilty, we are both the wrong side of forty so not boy racers but we don't plod around at 45mph either. -
Vauxhall Zafira - 3 kids in the back: Zafira or Grand Scenic? 5 Mar 2011 (Forum)
Would a deisel carry the extra miles better or should I go for the lower mileage petrol car. We do about 10,000 miles per year but obviously want something that's as cheap as possible to run and reliable. Any views / experience in this area really appreciated. Thanks, YorkDad -
Peugeot 306 HDI - Loss of Power 27 Feb 2011 (Forum)
Having looked around the 'net' I see a lot of people talking about the MAF but I am not exactly sure where this is located or how to remove it. There are no warning lights showing up on the dash, it starts and actually runs fine but is just lacking it's usual power. Any help or ideas with this problem would be most appreciated. -

My Jeep runs on both Petrol and LPG. Sometimes she fires up fine on either fuel and purrs like a kitten. Turn her off and she will just not start. Leave it for a few hours and she starts again. So frustrating. Twice had to be recovered. -

Once started and left to tick over for a little while it start with no problems! Any ideas - don't want to get to where I am going and not be able to get home! -

Honda CR-V 2005 - Airbag warning light 20 Jan 2011 (Forum)
My CR-V airbag light is on most of the time when i drive . A friendly local garage has run a diagnosis on this and informed me that there is a problem with the front passenger seatbelt and Mr. Honda would have to replace the whole anchorage on that belt :-( I'm cringing at the thought of main dealer charges but i must get this done as apart from it being dangerous (no airbags will operate) it is a fail for M.O.T.
