Strange running Mk3 Golf 29 Nov 2006 (Forum)
I check for water and found the Hall effect sensor connector was wet so dried and tried again, no go but a smell of fuel. Flooded I thought. Left it over night and sure enough it started this morning after a bit of hesitation it fired on all 4 and took it a run but it was a bit lumpy and rough. If I sit with the revs at 2600 ish every 4 seconds ithe revs drop to 2400 and it keeps doing this. -
"Payback" Mileage for secondhand Diesel 22 Nov 2006 (Forum)
(P) plate Subaru legacy , or to buy a 3 yr old modern diesel, woith hopefully equivalent performance, but which of course will be more expensive to purchase, but cheaper in fuel... eg 2003 current shape Avensis... What are the swings & roundabouts debates :-) -
Company car tax info please 24 Aug 2006 (Forum)
I am thinking, ok, £6k less, but Gordon Brown would take £1.5k of that anyway. It probably costs me about £1k on fuel to get to work so as a gross amount, say rough £1.25k on my salary. That doesn't include wear and tear, servicing, ins etc. But I am totally ignorant to how much it would "cost" me to have a company car. -
reminiscence 30 Jun 2006 (Forum)
How about this- do you remember the little pot on the right hand side of the fuel pump which had a swirly line and spun as you pumped your gallons out as the dial went round, like a clock face ?. Green shield stamps (done that one before). Esso blue, Pink parrafin, National Garages,We serve you garages, garages that only sold petrol/derv and oil. -
New Car for Aged Parents 19 May 2006 (Forum)
They also own a small Seat which is used for most of the short local journeys so the replacement would be mostly used for longer cross country trips (mostly A roads as my mum dislikes the speed of motorways and my dad dislikes being told he's going too fast at 65mph). Purchase price is not a major issue but running costs in terms of tax, fuel consumption and servicing are. Neither have any interest in gadgets such as sat nav, cruise control, etc although air conditioning is a must. I'm sure there will be more wants/needs over the next few months but from what they've come up with already, are there any suggestions where to start? -
99 Audi A3 central locking gone mad! 29 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Any of the above situations will manifest themselves at anytime. Toi be honest, I just thought of it there, I have yet to check two if the fuel flap locks itself as well... Any idea's?? -
Vw Golf Immobliser (mk 3) 8 Apr 2006 (Forum)
But I haven't got an immobilizer, nor do I want one!! It starts for about 1 sec then dies. Also it has blanked out the fuel gauge, clock and mileage on two different instrument clusters. Can I default something in the engine ECU, as thats all I've got, to get me going? A scan does not pick up any other modules, eg Instruments or immobiliser. -
VAG brake disks/pads 4 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Just thought I'd share this with other owners of cars built on that platform which might have common brake components. As an aside, I'm starting to wonder if this may explain the gradual reduction in fuel economy in recent months - took a 50-mile A&B-road trip yesterday which the OBC measured at 51 mpg, as opposed to 45 mpg for the same trip the previous week. Probably too early to say but I don't think I drove any more carefully last night in comparison to the last time. -- andymc Vroom, vroom - mmm, doughnuts ... -
Which mid-size 5 seater MPV? 17 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Other than that the basic criteria is ... decent reliability, decent safety/crash worthiness, decent fuel economy - doesn't have to be diesel, but 35+mpg (combined) would be great, decent luggage space .....and a switchable front passenger airbag would help. Image and/or badge are not a concern, though value for money is ....budget is around £6-8k. -
The watch con 6 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Whilst out this morning I called in to fill with fuel. On paying and returning to the car a gut in a black Audi parked at a pump opened his window and ask if I wanted a bargain and siad he ahd just finished a show and was left with a load of watches and didn't not have to account for them so if I wanted a £600 watch for say £100 then I can have one. -
Diesel options 31 Jan 2006 (Forum)
So my options are; 1) Sell my Golf privately (£10-£10.5k?) and get the TDi 2) Trade it in and see the money come back in fuel savings 3) Sell my Golf privately and get a Fabia VRs/Old shape Leon 130Tdi or similar (i used to have a Leon and liked it alot) 4) Keep my Golf because my annual mileage of circa 20k prob wouldnt cost me a alot mor in petrol than it would in Diesel. 5)Any other options Thansk in advance! -
VX Vectra Rev counter input? 30 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I am interested to see why the rev counter is acting the way it does which may help me isolate the fault. I plan to change the fuel filter as a first step as it probably needs doing anyways. The fault codes stored in the ECU as far as I can tell relate to an issue I had about 3 years ago, if I can find the Radio code I will clear the ECU to make sure. -
Polo 97P:Overfuelling 7 Dec 2005 (Forum)
There is a strong smell of petrol, the plugs are drenched and spinning the engine on the starter with plugs out (and warming the plugs on the gas hob)didn't get it going. This engine has a multipoint fuel injection system, but no obvious hot-wire air flow sensor. Neither is there a water heated auto-choke like old Polos. The air filter is clean & dry, but there is some oil residue in the venturi throat, so it might have been overfilled with oil by a previous owner. -
306 1.8 petrol pinking under medium load 4 Sep 2005 (Forum)
After a few seconds the pinking ceases. It does not pink under any other operating regime. The plugs are a perfect colour, fuel consumption is as it always has been, the air filter is still clean, there are no induction blockages, and the problem has been prevalent over many (many) tanks of branded 95 octane petrol. This genuine 37k miles car still burns the same faithful 1 litre of oil per 2000 miles that it always has. -
Which SUV to replace diesel estate? 26 Aug 2005 (Forum)
The boot is cavernous and the 4wd is a bonus for the odd occassion when I can get close to the action (skiing etc). Fuel economy isn't that important, but it manages mid 30s on the combined figures. For £20,000 I can get a brand new one with all the toys, some £13,000 less than the Volvo or the VW. Are there any other cars I should be considering before I sign on the line? -
Help! Kerb weight VW Passat 26 May 2005 (Forum)
In the brochure it stated that the kerb weight was 1824kgs based on the vehicle weight, 90% tank of fuel and the driver (75kgs). This suited my needs and gave me the option to tow heavier loads based on the 85% towing rule so I purchased the vehicle. I have recently increased the weight I am towing, however I have now looked in the handbook and the Kerb weight is 150Kg lighter. -
VW 1.9 TDI intermittent cough 18 May 2005 (Forum)
Other than the misfires the engine runs normally - turbo works OK and no smoke from exhaust. The car has done 153,000 miles. The garage has ruled out a fuel pipe/pump problem. Possible causes that occur to me are: Faulty connectors in engine management system. Faulty 'Relay 109' Sticking EGR valve Engine stop solenoid cutting in momentarily. When the key is in the 'run' position, but without starting the engine there is an alternating rapid ticking from the wastegate actuator solenoid on the bulkhead and then a quicker 'buzz' from one of the electronic bits on the injector pump. -
Fiesta 1.25 16V - Idle speed 5 May 2005 (Forum)
Hi I recently did a lot of miles on the motorway (Brum to Gatwick) and found that when I drove on the smaller roads around town the idle speed of the engine tends to "stick" before settling back down (when changing gear). I have also noticed that since then a). my fuel economy isnt the greatest and b). my *actual* idle speed, at rest, is a lot higher... nearer 1250 (c.f. around 8-900 previously). When I owned a slightly older Fiesta the problem I had a similar problem that was much more apparent, especially when coming to a standstil... the revs would race super high and I would have to lower then my bringing the clutch to the bite point. -
New Panda - lack of grip 8 Apr 2005 (Forum)
I make an absolute religion of ensuring that the tyre pressures on all our vehicles are spot-on (in fact usually very very slightly over the prescribed pressure, to allow for pressure loss between checks), so underinflation can't be the reason. I have heard that these low-rolling resistance "fuel saver" tyres can be less grippy than others, and certainly the tread pattern seems a lot less pronounced than, for example, the Dunlop SP Sports on my Civic. My questions are therefore 1) Are EcoContacts particularly bad for grip or is it possible we have a naff set? -
Running in a Diesel - advice please! 17 Mar 2005 (Forum)
It will only get normal stuff for the rest of it's life as it is a company car and the company (and I!) would resent the unreasonable premium there is on these so-called premium fuels. I know they are often given the thumbs up by people but the reality is I won't use them. Much appreciated!!! Gavin
