  • Daimler Double Six. Any good? 8 Dec 2004 (Forum)
The Series 3 Jag version and in addition to the overpriced S****ra of course. Has anyone any experience of running or working on these? Prices go from £300 to £15000 for a brilliant one, so the margin for getting it dramatically wrong seems massive. I have £10000 to spend. Checked out the South African Autotrader as the best UK dealer ones seem to come from SA and a few classic mags have bought other marques from there as they are rust free and cheap.
  • 405 1.9TD - Lumpy Idle 3 Dec 2004 (Forum)
It still doesn't want to start properly taking quite a bit of cranking and blumes of white smoke after it catches. Once its warmed up it runs fine and doesn't smoke. The only problem is a slightly lumpy idle which occurs after about a minute of sitting still. Nothing major, just a slight cough every 10 seconds or so. I'm reluctant to think its compression a)because i can't bear to and b) because it seems to have loads of poke when driving.
  • Pug 405 1.9TD L Reg Exhaust 22 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Wondered if this is going to turn into a nightmare finger nipping job or if it is relatively easy? Any tips would also be appreciated! Have a similar running and starting prob to some other diesel pugs mentioned on here. Difficult to start and lumpy idle but pulls well and seems to drive normally. Sounds like new injectors but I'd like to check the diesel pump timing first - how is it done?
  • More Pierburg 2E2 woes 16 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Well unsurprisingly it has shedloads of problems, the most serious being a blocked idle jet on the dreaded pierburg 2E2 carb (I think). It won't idle at all, needs plenty of throttle to keep it running. I have replaced the fuel and air filter but I went for an inspection of the carb and it was nasty dirty in there. What is the best way to go about troubleshooting/solving this problem? Please don't call Weber on me yet - not ready to pony up £160+VAT on one!
  • Smelly Peugeot Diesel 307 8 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Following its first major service it intermittently stinks badly of diesel in the cabin, most consistently after running normally a while from cold, until it's at least half-warm, then pulling up at a junction. Fumes clear on moving off. May recur at later junctions, but less. Garage says 'no fuel system leak' and the exhaust is OK.
  • Poor starting - Mondeo 1.8 lx 14 Oct 2004 (Forum)
On cranking there is a loud clicking noise which seems to come from glovebox area when sitting in the car. Eventually car starts and then runs well. Serviced only recently and new plugs/leads. Weird thing however is that as car is trying to start the the windscreen wipers move across the screen (even though not turned on) and the central locking seems to be activating.
  • Car badges! 7 Oct 2004 (Forum)
The interior of the rectangle is coloured blue, white and blue in vertical sections. There are two characters superimposed on these vertical elements, one running horizontally and one vertically. They look asiatic or far eastern in style. 3. A horizontally extended representation of an eagle, not dissimilar to the old eagle of the third reich and somewhat art deco in style, but in blue.
  • Peugeot 106 diesel coolant problem 4 Oct 2004 (Forum)
I don\'t understand why is pouring out of the cap. I\'ve tried another cap, but no difference. Apart from that it\'s a good little run about
  • Passat Problems (Mass Airflow Meter??) 18 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Hi, HJ's Car-by-Car Breakdown mentions MAF sensor failures on Passats, which might be the cause of SHMBO's '98 1.8 20V (only 150k miles!) running poorly. Symptoms are poor idling, with a tendency to stall if the throttle is 'blipped'. Seemed mainly to occur when the engine was warming up, but is getting worse, and now happens when hot. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
  • insurance on other cars 17 Aug 2004 (Forum)
i will be borrowing a friends old volvo estate to move furniture, while im not to concerned with the cost of replacing his car if an accident occurs (its worth tops £400) I dont want to run the risk of having no insurance. also - if i was to own his volvo (a real future possibility) - would i still be able to use my main cars insurance policy to cover use of the volvo?
  • Boys Toys - Porsche 944 10 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Any pointers regards what to look out for - mechanicals / electrical probs? I plan to use this motor only for a bit of fun and fair weather runs. There are 60K miles (ish) on it, and like I said she's in perfect order. Off to check out classic insurance.... This should be interesting..... Advice as always, would be much appreciated. Leon
  • Mondeo TDi. No power 1 Aug 2004 (Forum)
The car smokes like a goodun. I loaded it up with Millers Diesel Power Plus and took it for a blast today, running up and down through the gears to 4200rpm to give it a bit of a decoke but it still smells like a 10 year old transit. I suspect it will take more than a few blasts to get anywhere near a clean exhaust, but we'll see.
  • Focus Timing Belt 28 Jul 2004 (Forum)
If so, how long before I need to replace it and how much will it cost? The car is pushing nearly 59,000 miles and runs perfectly. Many thanks Adam
  • First car for 17 year old daughter 24 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Would this be suitable car for her to learn in and use around town for a few years ? I believe it can run on both LPG and petrol. On another subject, I am also considering enrolling her for intensive tuition over two weeks with a driving test at the end of it. Does anyone have any experience of this type of learning and whether it is more or less effective than learning over an extended period ?
  • Rally Turkey 28 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Never mind Formula 1 what about the Turkish Rally? Gronholm had just started running in first position and was out on stage when his co driver let out an enormous shriek and went very quiet. Gronholm had to slow down as his co driver had given up. Turned out that a piece of steel had pierced the floor and the co driver\'s seat and hit him in \"****\" (Gronholms words not mine!
  • Audi Climate control 17 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I run a `97 A4 1.9 TDI SE with climate control. However just lately it has been giving problems.Upon engaging the aircon you can hear the pump rattling loudly. Also it does not seem to blow as cold as it did.I took the car to a trusted garage and he diagonosed the pump bearings were "gone".He seemed to think the pump wasn`t worth rebuilding and advised me to take it to an audi dealer for a new pump. This course of action I do not want to do.Can anyone suggest someone willing to repair the pump/system rather than just replace the pump with a new one?.
  • VW Transporter camper 6 Jun 2004 (Forum)
heya Problem on my T25 camper. It has a 96 2 litre turbo diesel. Runs very well (75 on motorway!!), starts like a dream. Problem is the dashboard lights start to flash after it warms up! The oil pressure light and glow plug heater lights flash. The glow plug light flashes like it is a rev counter, the higher the revs the faster the flash.
  • Ex-lease Vectra, £5.5k 22 May 2004 (Forum)
He has a 1997 Suzuki Vitara at present which is beginning to show its age, I guess it may be better to run the Suzuki into the ground and get a proper car, or even a newer Suzuki with the Citroen engine. Any thoughts?
  • Rally cars - where to find ? 27 Apr 2004 (Forum)
It seems that C&CC isn't published any more, and I haven't seen Motoring News for a while either - where do they get advertised these days p.s. - I suspect his budget is more likely to run to a MkII Escort than a Subaru :-) -- just 'cos I know what I'm saying doesn't mean I know what I'm talking about
  • Waiting for the impact 7 Apr 2004 (Forum)
Waiting to turn right into main road yesterday, roads a bit slick from shower, traffic to my right backed up as far as I could see, my intended lane free running. Just beyond the traffic lights at the junction some 50yds to my left, traffic was also at a standstill but would anyone let me out! Lights changed to green, all sprint forward up to the stationary traffic which appeared to be invisible to the sprinters as there was a lot of sharp braking going on.
