More Pierburg 2E2 woes - Phil G
I bought a £150 Jetta banger hoping it would be reliable short term motoring for SWMBO. I have some experience with the 1600cc engine in this as I used to have a Golf with it.

Well unsurprisingly it has shedloads of problems, the most serious being a blocked idle jet on the dreaded pierburg 2E2 carb (I think). It won't idle at all, needs plenty of throttle to keep it running. I have replaced the fuel and air filter but I went for an inspection of the carb and it was nasty dirty in there. What is the best way to go about troubleshooting/solving this problem?

Please don't call Weber on me yet - not ready to pony up £160+VAT on one!

things to check
is the oil dipstick broken?
does the choke pull off leak vaccum?
the pipe that goes from the carb to the air cleaner, does if help to pull this off and plug it?
Distributor vaccum leak?
does it run better when hot or cold?

have you tried to adjust the idle mixture? have you had a look under the idle mixture tower?

I'm currently going throught the same process on a golf and so far have replaced the vac pull off, the control for the hot air flap in the air intake, the dipstick. I've reset the mixture several times but it still idles roughly and does strange things when warming up

Hi Phil,

Drew's suggestions are all sound. But why not consider an expert diagnosis before spending hours and/or multiple pounds. Trawl your local Yellow Pages under "Car Engine Tuning" or "Engine Tuning", or seek recommendations from friends and colleagues. If you let us know approximately where you are you may get a recommendation here.

Regards, Adam.
Whatever is rightly done, however humble, is noble.

if you get the professionals in make sure they're happy to look at a 2e2. A couple of vw specialists I have been to have looked at the carb and just said 'replace it with a webber' without even examining it
me: why?
them: its old and worn

I got the impression that they thought the 2e2 to be a bit of a headache. They're not wrong!!
I think they were right to an extent in that it takes time to re-jig an old 2e2 and time is expensive when it comes to gargages.

I got one 2e2 sorted on my old golf after about 6 months of trial and error and a lot of help from people on this site and Clubgti.
Now I have another one and this is by and large there now. the best buy is the Haynes carb manual and a scrap carb to practice on!

This link is one of the best definitive guides I have found for this carb. Well worth reading for all old VW owners!

Several people I have spoken with confirm the view that most of the trade do not like these carbs, probably too complex , hence the Weber route!

i agree - any VW mechanic will tell u that the 2e2 is a pain in the neck !!!

i had one on my polo coupe 's' which caused me no end of problems - i put it on the rollers, and managed to ajust it, but it used to run rich most of the time ( which was not of concern) but only used to have problems during cold starts !!!!!

i was planning to get a new carb, but they are often very hard to find, and NOT cheap !!!!!!!!!!!

try giving it a GOOD clean, use carb cleaner all over, then run redex directly down the throttle, also remove the fuel line, and inject some straight into the carb.

good luck

I guess this installation is _similar_ to the 2E3 on Polo.

If so, you can loose all idle by the earth to the manifold area (under the lower filter casing) being disconnected: the electronic valve which prevents it running on relies on this earth to operate.

And the thermal choke unit and the heater frog relies on this earth strap. Regards Peter
