Chips away or bodyshop? 9 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Some yoghurt hit my six-week old car with what I think was an errant shopping trolley and put a two inch tablespoon like indentation on my rear wing and a slight 1/4'' scratch underneath the dent on the top seam of the bumper. It's in an awkward spot just about where the rear bumper and rear wing meet. -
is a Legend coupe worth the price 24 May 2003 (Forum)
hi all i live in France and need another car but don't dare buy the home product (all ugly, unreliable and appear to be cobbled together between strikes - just like the old days, eh?). I am thinking of sticking with RHD and buying a Honda Legend 3.2 coupe I found in UK. -
Oil filters 10 Apr 2003 (Forum)
My old Polo started making some intermittent tapping noises from the rocker cover after I did an oil change and used (for the first time ever) a non-VW oil filter. It was a Sunday and my VW garage was shut so I popped down to the local branch of a well known car assessory shop and got one of their filters. -
Diesel driving characteristics 12 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I suspect part of the problem is generally tall gearing, although the engine seems to have a power dead spot below 1500rpm before the turbo kicks in. Is this the usual diesel experience? Still love the car though David -
Dodgy Mk2 Golf Electrics 14 Nov 2002 (Forum)
I've got the old Golf ('88 1.6) back on the road with a combination of my hard work, money and the local garage and its running well, touch wood. There is something that annoys me that I noticed last night - it seems that the electrics will be "on" after switching off - the wipers, the radio, even the brake lights will come on if you hit the pedal while the engine is off. -
Mondeo Diesel Cold Start 30 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Starting Problem - Ford Mondeo Ghia X Hatch 1996 (old body) 1.8TD Symptoms a) Cold starts - Engine turns over, starts but runs roughly at ~400 rpm as if only 2 cylinders are firing for a few seconds, then picks up and runs normally. However sometimes the engine cold starts perfectly ie fires on the first turn and runs normally immediately. -
Peugeot HDi -clutching at straws? 28 Aug 2002 (Forum)
I don't believe in the supernatural, nor pointless bills. Does anyone have an idea as to what may have caused this, given that the car was serviced 3 months ago? DickCD -
Demon OAP drivers 11 Mar 2002 (Forum)
I took the right-hand lane as usual (normally the quickest) half way round the roundabout i became aware of a car going very quick round the outside of me to my surprise a little old dear (80's) peering THRU the steering wheel of her Proton. She actually beat me onto the exit road !. Very embarrasing, i had a good look in my mirrors to check no one from work saw this.I followed her for about 2 miles she overtook everything in her path. -
Kenlowe Hot-Start 7 Feb 2001 (Forum)
Does it do any good? Dunno, really - mpg appears about the same, but it IS nice to get into a warm car on a cold morning. Wear has yet to be assessed. Anyone else got one - what do you think? -
Fuel level gauges 19 Dec 2000 (Forum)
Is it a design fault? I also read that the fuel tank is also meant to be of around a 50L capacity (well, at least the old S-Reg Clio brochure stated that!), but I have never managed to fill more than 37L, even when the red warning light is on! Surely it is important to have a gage which accurately show the correct amount of fuel left in the tank for safety reasons? -
Astravan 1.7 DTI 16V Y17DT 2001 - Error code P1125 Y17DT astravan G orange warning l 16 Oct 2020 (Forum)
The solenoid valve I fitted to the top of the engine that turned out to be the EGR valve, was in fact the rear boost lower solenoid valve, so that was a bonus. The pipe fitting on the old boost vlave must have been cracked as it came of with the pipe fairly easily. still running the old EGR solenoid at the moment. gets to 70 mph and then the light comes on and error code P1125 boost solenoid valve. -
Any - Brother and law retirement car 25 Jun 2021 (Forum)
I had a chat yesterday with my wife's brother, and his looming retirement at the end of the year came up. He is a teacher and was living close to the school, so he didn't use a car to get to work but have a very old knackered V reg Audi A4 that he uses for the occasional 500 miles trip to Lincolnshire. His kid left the nest, so it's just him and the Mrs. Now that he is retiring, he is thinking of replacing the A4 with a smaller new car that will last him over 15 years or until he or the car will push daisies., this is his most important criteria. -
Vauxhall Astra Mk 5 2.0 Petrol - Misfire after 30 seconds. 12 May 2020 (Forum)
I’m hoping someone may be able to help me with a fault which has developed on my car. It is currently off the road due to now having a company car, and has only been used half a dozen times since last November. It is a Mk5 Astra 2.0 petrol engine. So I went to take the car out of the garage yesterday and it would not start. -
Mazda 3 1.6 tdi - At a loss as to what to do now! 22 Oct 2019 (Forum)
The car will run fine for days, weeks or maybe just hours before this problem happens. I have had diagnostics run on the car with an independent garage using Mazda software which showed nothing, no current faults and no pending faults, the guy said the only fault he could see anywhere was an old fault on the system for the throttle positioning sensor but that it was in the history and not showing as active(he also cleared it just incase it was causing some random problem by being stored there). -
Auto gearbox - any reliable unconventional ones? 21 Feb 2017 (Forum)
Hi, My wife has an automatic-only licence and does about 24,000 miles a year. Until now we've had Petrol 1.6L cars like the Astra, Focus etc. We buy used (2-3 years old) when the car's done about 20,000 miles & px it at 100,000. Our usual budget is around the £7-£8k mark. All our cars have had conventional 'torque converter' auto boxes and have been fine but they're a dying breed as car companies try & switch to more efficient unconventional designs like computer controlled manuals (Toyota MMT), DSGs (VW DSG & Ford Powershift) & CVTs. -
Nissan Micra - Advice please - to sell or not to sell? 21 Oct 2015 (Forum)
I am hoping for some advice from you all! We own two cars, but as I got a new job we now only need one. We're hesitating about what to do. Below is a description of each car and my view of the pros and cons of the different options. We need the car for my partner's commute and for occasional holidays, so around 15000 miles per year. -
Recoendation on supermini below 5000?? 25 May 2012 (Forum)
I'm currently driving a 53 reg Honda jazz altomatic closing up to 100000 miles, it serves a really good car over the past 2 and a half year, only problems occurred so far is some battery flat, failed alternator and rusty exhaust box which fall of in the middle of motorway. I'm planning to change to a newer car and have serveral questions, my budget is roughly around 4k-5k, this include my car to be part exchange. -
Jaguar X-Type Estate - Questioning HJs review 14 Jan 2012 (Forum)
On my part I would like as near to new as possible, meaning an 09 car, and conventional wisdom is that later cars are better as problems get ironed out during lifespan, yet this rather sweeping statement seems to wipe out the last 3 years of production as not being worth looking at, and in turn means HJ is suggesting looking only at examples which might be 5 years old or more. -
Nissan Micra K12 - Advice on a Nissan Micra 7 Sep 2010 (Forum)
There was a FSH with it being serviced every year and doing about 600 miles each year. I was looking for a new car to replace an old model and so I was looking for something more reliable mainly, something that wont be failing every MOT or breaking down. Anyway, this was the first time I have bought a car, the previous car I had came to me from within the family. -
Vauxhall Astra H Estate, - Which car?(6 mth baby)safe,automatic,low insurance 17 Aug 2010 (Forum)
Hi, For the last 2 months we have been struggling to decide on a car. We have a 6 month baby and except for a monthly 200K drive on motorway most of our drive will be within London. No preference for any specific car. Main consideration in selection are: a) Safety (most important - euro ncap 5) b) Low insurance (4-6 group / 1.4-1.6 engine) since I have held a license for only a few months c) Automatic (mainly for city driving) d) Approx 3 yr old / 30K / from a network dealer for 5K but can go up to 7K Based on these we short-listed Ford-Fusion but then realized that boot space was too small to hold pram.
