  People who put safety first when buying a car may be impressed by the performance of five models in the latest Euro Ncap assessments. The Kia Soul, Hyundai i20, Honda Jazz, Peugeot 3008 and Audi Q5 all received maximum five-star ratings. Vehicles are tested for the protection they offer pedestrians and occupants in the event of a collision. The rating they are given also takes into account if the car includes safety assist devices to help motorists avoid accidents.

  At last VW is ditching the ancient 115bhp 8 valve 2.0 litre engine in the Passat, and replacing it by the 130bhp 20v 2.0 litre as used in the new Audi A4. The 0-60 comes down from 10.9 seconds to 9.6 seconds, top speed goes up from 124mph to 130mph, fuel economy improves from 32.8 mpg to 34.9 mpg on the combined cycle, and CO2 emissions are down from 206g/km to 194g/km.

  Obviously traders at auction today were either doing their VAT books at the time, or were in the pub. Because some of the prices paid were through the roof. Sixth from bottom in the respected Warranty Direct study was the stylish Audi TT with 51 out of 100 owners recording a mechanical failure of some degree. The luxurious Jaguar XJ, Vauxhall Frontera, Volvo V70 and Renault Laguna completed the inauspicious bottom ten. Based on the study sample, thirty percent of cars will breakdown during the course of a year, leaving owners having to fork out an average repair bill of £310.66.
