  • MB gullwing to launch in Cape Town! 22 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Ex-motoring journalist Dieter Losskarn, a German who now lives in Hout Bay, put the trip together. He said Mercedes-Benz had considered Dubai and Malaysia, but settled on the Mother City, which is "just so 'in' at the moment". The car, which will sell for between R4-million and R5-million, clocks 0-200km/h in less than eight seconds.
  • High-tech cars putting off older customers ? 14 Sep 2014 (Forum)
I'm in the market for a high-end SUV, so I've looked at Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Mercedes-Benz ML-class so far and have a few others to look at - but I'm totally lost with all this high-tech displays I don't understand and electronic gadget options that I've no idea if I need or not. All the manufacturers seem to rely on online configurators but often all they tell you is the option name, the price and a yes/no box.
  • Best Cashback option..CLK/MR2/CELICA/MONDEO 5 Nov 2012 (Forum)
    I have a car which is worth about £3400(private)  but I am finding it difficult to sell so I am looking at a cashback option for a cheaper car but I must admit ( except for the mondeo ) I wanted something a little bit different and smart looking All the dealers have offered me £3000 aginst the following cars :- Mercedes-Benz CLK 230K ELEGANCE 2DR TIP AUTO 2.3, 1998, 82,000mls £2000 Ford Mondeo 1.8 LX 5DR, 2004 ,  82,000mls   £ 1595 Hyundai Coupe 1.6i 3 Door - 2000, 83,000mls  £   995 Toyota Celica 1.8 VVTI - 2000, 115000mls £1195 Hyundai Coupe 2.0 SE - 2002, 85000mls £1925 Toyota MR2 1749CC HARD TOP/SOFT TOP 3dr 2001 52,200mls £2495 Any really BIG pluses OR minuses to these cars ?
  • Expensive shine? 15 Jun 2007 (Forum)
It allegedly has a lifetime guarantee and has been 'rigorously tested and approved around the world with leading OEMs such as Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari, Ford and GM'. This coating is said to safeguard bodywork integrity and maintain the car's asset value (although there's no mention of what happens when panels rust through from inside).
  • Blue Oval, Griffin, Three pointed star.. 15 Oct 2004 (Forum)
So they substitute a description of the manufacturer's badge, all in the name of good writing. Hence Ford is 'the blue oval', Vauxhall 'the griffin' and Mercedes-Benz is 'the three pointed star. I've even seen BMW referred to as 'the blue propeller'. Yet these terms are hardly shorthand, and I now find they are over used to the point of being obtrusive. Why not just stick to the real names?

  • The Electric Vehicle (EV) thread Vol 3 23 Dec 2023 (Forum)
Hybrid vehicles had fewer issues than gasoline ones, while plug-in hybrids had 146% more problems. Mercedes-Benz and Stellantis'  (STLAM.MI)  Chrysler brands were ranked 29th and 30th, respectively. Asian carmakers dominated the top-10 places with Lexus ranking first and Toyota second.
  • PCP bandwagon - will it ever stop? 18 Mar 2018 (Forum)
It seems to have hugely favoured the German makes to sell access to £40k+ cars to people who barely look able to afford much more than an ordinary second hand car. I’m continuously amazed by who I see sitting in or getting out of shiny BMWs, Evoques and Mercedes Benzes in the average, not even up market, supermarket car park, their youth in particular and relative ordinariness is obvious. Will the whole pcp thing end? I don’t understand what’s propping it up.
  • New Classic Cars 21 Jan 2018 (Forum)
I am certain that other manufacturers will follow the lead of JLR and Aston Martin.  Ferrari Dino?  Lambo Miura?  Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing?  BMW 3.0CSL?  Porsche 911? What do you reckon?
  • Taxis in Brussels 11 Oct 2013 (Forum)
That said, quite a number are customised by the manufacturer as taxis with price read-outs on the rear view mirror etc. why do MB and VAG continue to churn out diesel taxis if they aren't really designed for urban driving? I must pay tribute though to the engineering of Mercedes Benz. The taxi SWMBO and I took to Brussels airport to catch the early flight home was driven by Mad Max who went through at least a set of brake pads, a clutch and a gearbox in his attempt to get out of rush hour Brussels nearly killing several pedestrians/cyclists in the process and a driving style that would have destroyed most other car makes.
  • Some people just don't listen... 7 Jan 2004 (Forum)
HJ writes, in the car-by-car breakdown, about certain Mercedes Benzes: Listen for timing chain rattle, signifying infrequent oil changes. Don't want to hear any ... rumbles from the wheel bearings. ... Remember, these cars only go on forever if frequently and expensively maintained.
  • Caravan towing speed record 5 Nov 2002 (Forum)
The petrol record was set using the same caravan as the diesel attempt but this time being towed by a Mercedes Benz ML500, the powerful V8 4x4 setting the record at a breakneck 174 km/h. This record is also under investigation as a world normally-aspirated production car towing record. Details of this will be confirmed shortly.
  • Is there such a car? 25 Nov 2020 (Forum)
I only use it for the work commute that only 15 miles of 30/40mph zones and occasional stop start traffic... but I am in the car for an hour each morning and night so bring comfortable is a big thing.. Before you go and say how about this BMW or this Mercedes Benz.... I can’t afford anything like that as I already have a big car to pay for so don’t want something that’ll drain my money away.... Here’s my specs: I am 6ft4 (with a 34” inside leg) £13k max Petrol (only cover 7-8k miles per year) Newish car (3 years max) Reliable No bigger than 4.25m(space on drive) It will only be serviced at a manufacturers service centre....
