It seems that journos in the motoring weeklies have a complex about using manufacturer's real names. So they substitute a description of the manufacturer's badge, all in the name of good writing. Hence Ford is 'the blue oval', Vauxhall 'the griffin' and Mercedes-Benz is 'the three pointed star. I've even seen BMW referred to as 'the blue propeller'. Yet these terms are hardly shorthand, and I now find they are over used to the point of being obtrusive. Why not just stick to the real names?
In the past I suppose the jargonists would refer to Dagenham, Luton or Stuttgart but in these days of globalisation these descriptions have lost some meaning.
We also have:
the green oval - Land Rover
the prancing horse - Ferrari
The lion - Peugeot
So here are some more suggestions:
The two silver ovals in a bigger silver oval - Toyota
The silver H - Honda
The other silver H - Hyundai
The four silver rings - Audi
The Gold L - Lexus
Any more, real or imagined?
Cheers, Sofa Spud

Oval with Stars?
Round "T"
Interlinked "M's"

The shield with some funny coloured horizontal bars on the top right and bottom left and some antlers in the other corners and a horse in the middle?
No, it's not going to work, is it. Best just say Porsche...

Or the two circles, One circle within the other with two primary graphics within the inner circle: On the left the red cross of the City of Milan (red cross white background) and on the right a green snake on a light blue background eating a red man.

The two arrows pointing upwords?
Shouldn't that be double chevron??

Which is actually supposed to represent a cog or gear wheel side on which is what Citroen originally specialised in; the v-shaped teeth were quite a revolution in their day.

Talbot?
What about:
The horizontal line in the middle of a circle in the middle of a square in the middle of a diagonal line?

"Two teeth of a double-helical gear" (Citroen)

L'escargot by name, but not by nature.

Correct, Talbot.
Throws me back to my childhood, first car an "inherited" Talbot Samba. Great car, kept me very fit as I had to push it for about a mile every morning before it would start!

Hyundai.

To be honest, I'm far too young to have normally got that, but my borther-in-law had a stripped out one when I was about 12, and re-sprayed it himself, including a very professionally done 'circled T' on the bonnet.
No-one got mine yet?
Horizontal line inside a circle, inside a square set in the middle of a diagonal line?

Correct.
Do I?
Gaa, I won't be able to get it till I get home from work.
I wonder if it concerns your super-hero identity...

Not a superhero, but I think you\'ve cracked it. Is it really that easy to tell? Answers to mailto:alan_moderator@honestjohn.co.uk as I can\'t find your work email (although I know I\'ve got it somewhere).

Surely Volvo would be "the biological symbol for male indise a square! Or am I being too intellectual?

Actually, I couldn't remember whether it did have an arrow coming off the circle, so I didn't mention it.
Does it always have that on the badge? I can't help thinking that I have seen Volvo badges without it in the past.
|
"The round silver-and-blue thing with F, I, A and T in the middle of it".
Nah, doesn't work. I agree with Sofa Spud - why not just use the actual name?
Bazza - Volvo?

ND beat me to it. Never mind.

1.A shield on a black rectangular background. The shield has a castle on a cliff with a sailing ship passing by.
2.Just an illuminating clue
3.Sphinx.
4. A scorpion on a red and yellow shield
|
And the 'green rounded-off triangle in the yellow circle'
That reminds me, I have a book downstairs called 'Blue Triangle'. It's about AEC buses.
Cheers, SS

1.A shield on a black rectangular background. The shield has a castle on a cliff with a sailing ship passing by. 2.Just an illuminating clue 3.Sphinx. 4. A scorpion on a red and yellow shield
Hmm.. Can't quite think of any of them.
Oh, except 4. which you've cheated on ;)
That'd be Abarth, but they're not really a car manufacturer as such, are they?

3 will be Armstong-Siddely.
Is 1 Lada?
2 - the old Wolseley badge that lit up?

Abarth, Armstrong-Siddely and Wolseley were correct.
That leaves 1. to answer. It is not Lada but much closer to home. There is a clue in the ship but not sure about the castle.

I've even seen BMW referred to as 'the blue propeller'.
How about another company that has a three bladed silver propeller as their badge?

Malteser asked the same question
1. A circular badge, inside of which there appears a representation of a castle on what appears to be a "white cliff" (Dover?) with a sailing vessel on a wavy lined sea.
I suspect the cliffs are the Bristol gorge
RF supplied the answer Bristol.
Still awaiting a guess for How about another company that has a three bladed silver propeller as their badge? The forum is hardly awash with guesses.

You may not be able to name the company but you may have seen shots of the car by the white cliffs of Dover.
No more hints.

To me the Lexus badge looks like 2/3 of a Mercedes badge.
What would that mean?
The Mazda badge looks like a seagull.
The Hyundai H is like the Honda H, but bent.

I'll give the make, you provide the symbol (because I know what it is but can't describe it exactly!). Does the game work this way round?
