  • Ford Ka - Is the buyer at it 2 Feb 2015 (Forum)
hello all,   I am after a bit of advice on behalf of a friend, my friend is a soldier and was posted to germany, when out there he bought a car that was registerd on the british forces system in germany known as a BFG ie the equivelent to a UK MOT.   The car in question is a 12 year old ford ka with 60k on the clock, he got posted back to the UK so de registred the car from the BFG net and re registered it in the UK, once across he relized he had no need for the car, so sold it on to another soldier,    bare with me and ill explain the situation, the car was sold to the buyer knowing the car had no MOT, the buyer was given all prievious BFG test certificates with all advisories all work carried out also was given the opertunity to test drive and inspect the car. the buyer seemed happy a low price was agreed and the car was sold as seen.
  • Ford - Ford Direct vs Ford Authorised Dealership 6 Sep 2009 (Forum)
However, I have been offered a Focus that seems to be a fairly good price by a dealership that I understand is an authorised dealership (they do sell Ford Direct cars), but the car is not part of the Ford Direct scheme. The car is an 09 reg, about 6 months old, with about 7,000 miles on the clock and I understand that it has been a demo car. The salesman has told me that the car will still have a 2.5 year warranty (the original 3 year warranty minus the first 6 months), Ford Direct cars seem to have 2 years (although presumably this car would have 2.5 years even if it was a Ford Direct).
  • 2019 Peugeot 2008 1.2puretechEAT6 130 - Progress report, oil usage 30 Apr 2023 (Forum)
3y6m old at exactly 20,000 miles, time for oil and filter change, last done by me at 10,000miles. I've read that these engines can be oil burners, so I'm keeping a watchful eye on it having run it in carefully since new.
  • Alfa nostalgia 21 Apr 2002 (Forum)
My dad had several Alfas, including two GTVs - one 1600, and the other a 1750 (about the same vintage as Paul's, and in lovely dark green). I drove and worked on all of them. What a lovely car the 1750 GTV was - the engine was fabulous, and the drive was exhilarating. However, in true Italian fashion, they did rot. All dad's Alfas needed metal transplants by the time they were 4 or 5 years old, but we forgave them.
  • Vauxhall Vectra - ECU replacement 30 Aug 2021 (Forum)
Hope someone can give us some advice on this.  The symbol for engine electronics appeared and there was a loss of steering power on the car so we pulled off the road and phoned rescue service. The car wouldn't start so they tried to jump start it. The rescue guy then announced that our car had "Fried" his van and that wouldn't start!
  • VW Golf 1.5 SE Nav 2018 - Golf - sudden loss of steering 18 Jun 2019 (Forum)
Getting out of the car, there was no punctured tyre, and inspecting the road there was no oil. The only logical explanation myself, the hgv driver and a witness behind had was a mechanical fault with the car. (The car is less than 6 months old and has only done 7k miles).
  • Mazda 6 - Mazda 6 2.5 - thoughts? 20 May 2019 (Forum)
But used car test drives are by nature short test drives. I found the car to be good drive to drive. The interiors of the car were plush and elegant, with leather upholstery and an openable moon roof. The electronic dash (which powers up when you turn the car on) appears very funky.
  • Peugeot 306 1.6 Automatic Yr 2000 - Problems starting 20 Mar 2016 (Forum)
The battery is 6 months old but still I have checked it and am getting good readings from it. People telling me it is the starter motor or altenator. As the car does turn the engine over a fraction I do not believe it is the starter motor nor the altenator.
  • Most Economical Petrol car over 2000cc? 3 Mar 2013 (Forum)
I do around 35,000 a year, so service intervals would be best if longer. I would consider a 3-5 year old car with up to 50,000 miles. Budget around £6-7k No turbo's as I would be looking to LPG convert it in the near future. (so a full size spare would be a real plus) Apart from the Mercedes A200 turbo, not many cars have just over 2000cc.
  • Peugeot 607 (2000 - ) - 2002 2.0 hdi Turbo boost coming in late 12 Apr 2012 (Forum)
My grandad bought a 607 about a month ago he already has 1 and the new 1 hasnt got the power of his old car. The turbo seems to come in at around 3000 rpm where as the other is progresive from a lower range. We have had the car on diognostics and it came up turbo preasure sensor so we changed it out.
  • Honda CRV 2001-2004? - New job requires a new car 12 Jan 2011 (Forum)
Carry family (2 adults 2 young kids and potentially a dog...) intermittantly Be reliable & comfortable (& practical) With the recent weather my head has been turned by an old CRV or a Freelander (or even an FRV, or other 4x4 - open to suggestion completely) However the in-laws (more petrolheads than me) suggest a BMW 3 series type if I must buy - they recommend a HP or even leasing a car.
  • Main Dealer network set to collapse?? 14 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Ford engine plant doing well. The bottom line is many tha could not reasonable afford a brand new car a few months ago - hada 10 year old car held for a year, went out in their thousands and bought new on low credit rates over 3/5 years - so stuck with car for 3/5 years. Trust me, if this scheme is not topped up, many dealers will go under.
  • Why stereotype us by the make of car we drive? 12 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Following on from some of the questions raised in the Badge snobbery V inverted badge snobbery thread, I've often wondered why assumptions are made of people by the type of car people drive. You hear phrases like "Typical xxx (insert offending make of car) driver" both on this forum and in general. Often maligned are BMW drivers, but what makes a BMW driver? Many years ago I bought myself a two year old 318.
  • Advice on a new car 10 Jun 2008 (Forum)
The shame of it. Anyway, I'm currently looking at reasonably priced 4x4s or estate cars, not really interested in people carrier type cars at the moment. Some more details, and I realise that I may need to be flexible with some of this... * petrol engine (I'm planning on going LPG - or is that a whole other thread in itself?)
  • Insurance for test drives 31 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Hi, I'm about to try selling my car privately, and I'm confused about the advice I've read about insurance when a potential buyer's taking my car for a test drive. As long as the buyer's got comprehensive cover on his car, they ought to have 3rd party cover to drive my car, so if he runs someone over he's covered.
  • Hmmm. An A Class? 20 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Or just keep the Clio until it gives up the ghost - after all, it's practically free motoring with it - it's old (K plate) but does the job well enough if in a slightly knackered looking way. Any advice much appreciated as ever! (I've checked the Car by car breakdown of course) -- Lee MINI adventure in progress
  • Don't break your own rules! 26 Apr 2004 (Forum)
Following the sale of my wifes Clio recently, we were under a bit of pressure to buy a replacement car. So, last weekend went to look at a Rover 25 (wifes first choice). Now I consider myself to be fairly knowledgeable about cars and what to look for. FIRST RULE: Don't buy a car in the rain. Saturday evening, light fading and raining, we looked at the car.
  • Vscc - Good day out 22 Jun 2003 (Forum)
They certainly don't spare those old cars and for someone who remembers the change from front to rear engined GP cars it was wonderful to see a 1960 Ferrari 256 and the Maserati 250Fs battling with the Coopers and Lotuses. Can recommend it.
  • Renault Clio - How times have changed with depreciation 29 Sep 2025 (Forum)
I decided to do a check on We buy any car would offer me if i had to sell the car and there offer was £14800 , So that's a drop of £2700 just leaving the forecourt and then over the next 12 months, The car would drop a further 10% at least , So the car will be worth £13300 with a total loss of over £4000 at least in a 12 month period.
  • Service record discrepancy 30 Sep 2003 (Forum)
I have a 5 year old VW Passat which I bought 2nd hand from a VW dealer about 3 years ago. I had the car serviced yesterday by an independent garage. When I collected the car the owner showed me that the car data panel in the service record book did not correspond to my car.
