what do you expect to pay? 5 Feb 2007 (Forum)
It is interesting to hear roomers quote costs for this and that for repairs and servicing. What do you expect to pay out every year for these items. We run an '06 VW which costs me £15 a month to cover all servicing costs and a W merc C class which gets a major service at a local non franchise garage every year and the odd oil change. This is about £500 and anything else that goes wrong is extra, this seems to be another £500 to £800 a year. -

Ford Focus C-Max 2.0 TDI 3 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Dealer has looked at it on several occasions but his diagnostics are unable to find any fault. It can run perfectly for a week or more. This car is dangerous in its present state. Would welcome any pointers as to the reason for this fault and how it may be found/demonstrated for the enlightenment of the dealer. -

Deterioration of safety with age 27 Sep 2006 (Forum)
I've often wondered how badly the safety of cars is compromised by age. Amongst other cars, I run a 1996 Megane which had a 4-star NCAP rating when it was new. I do appreciate that NCAP is about inbuilt design as well as structural integrity, but there must be a point where key parts of the structure are no longer as sound as they were. -
BMW 2.2L Oil (2003 E39) 22 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Hi I am noticing that my E39 is taking up oil more frequently, I have done 112K and had to top up half litre after almost 600 miles.... sounds like too much?! Still running great but a little worried about the rate at which its taking up oil, anyone experience something similiar? Also, what the best oil for these? I had to grab some oil in emergency from a service station (Castrol Sport Edge 0W-40), is this ok? -
Laying up car for 6 months 20 Sep 2006 (Forum)
WIll hook the battery up to a trickle charger and leave the handbrake off so hopefully no battery and brake issues when it is to be used again. Should I change the oil (was done recently) and maybe run it once a week for 10 minutes to keep the engine going or is this doing more harm than good? -
granada automatic 27 Aug 2006 (Forum)
brother inlaw arrived from st helens last night, as he pulled up , the auto fluid is spilling out , i live in bedfordsire,[hes borrowed my car to go to twickenham. ]. its a 2 litre k reg scorpio 50 thousand miler . ive read here of the fragility of these boxes , its seems to be leaking from the bell housing its a steady drip with engine running, . if he kept topping up do you think he could make it 160 miles, . does any body know the service time given to remove gearbox. by the way his breakdown cover takes the family home ,but the car only 20 miles. -
'93 jeep cherokee electrical glitch 12 Aug 2006 (Forum)
The engine took to just stopping whilst driving (annoying and dangerous) and finally traced this to the Crank Position Sensor. I had this replaced but now, though, it and not me decides whether it starts or not. Once running it goes just fine (no stopping like before). When it chooses to start it just fires up at first crank - if not then nothing will make it fire. The ''experts'' that have looked so far say 'electrical' but can find nothing wrong. -
VW Polo N reg GLX 1.6 starting Problems 9 Aug 2006 (Forum)
I have recently replaced the fuel filter and spark plugs but again when I turn the ignition I can hear the fuel pump switch on, although I cannot tell if its running constantly is there a way I can check for this? For other info Mileage : 90k Reg : N, 1996 Many Thanks -
'luxury' supermini ? 22 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Good quality ICE (or easily upgradable) 6. Bright 'luxurious' interior (cream or light grey leather ideal) 7. Reasonable running costs. 8. Max £10k - if used, max 3 years old. I can't think of anything that comes close. My Yaris scores well on 1, 2, 4, 7, and 8, but poorly on the others. Most cars that score well on 3, 5 and 6 are too big. -
Audi A4 V6 2.5 tdi starting prob's 17 Jun 2006 (Forum)
This symptom started last summer when it happened a couple of times. On each occasion the car is towed the the Audi dealer where it starts and runs perfectly, with no fault codes logged. It's just done the whole winter without missing a beat, but just started playing up again with the recent hot weather. Any ideas? TIA Mark -
Engine Management Light - Subaru 9 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Started the car, moved it all of 5 yards and stopped the engine. I do this occasionally, but let the engine run for longer than 15 seconds. I started the car again about 15 minutes later and the engine management light came on. I ran the car hard on the way to work and when I left the office at 4:15 it was still on. -
Low cost work horse? 21 May 2006 (Forum)
We run a Mini and an MX-5 which cover almost all of our motoring needs. Occasionally though it would be useful to have a 3rd car to use for taking garden waste to the tip, bringing home the occasional Ikea flat pack and taking bikes out occasionally. -
Seat Cordoba '96 1.6 won't start 26 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Daughter's 96 Cordoba ignition coil failed at the weekend. Fitting a used coil got it running, but with misfire until warm. Started and ran OK Monday then yesterday turned over without firing and then not even that. Today I've fitted a new coil and a set of plug leads while charging the battery, but now no sign of life when the key is turned, even with a booster pack, so suspect either starter motor (Bosch) or relay. -
Honda CTDI Civic smoke problem 25 Apr 2006 (Forum)
In last few weeks the car exhaust has starting smoking - grey/blue - which is fine if you want to leave following traffic in a cloud of dust! Honda have run all their diagnostic tests and can find nothing obviously wrong. Oil & water levels fine and no sign of cross contamination. Filters also okay. Apparently Honda UK unable to help - not reported before. -
skoda fabia 1.9tdi 2003 17 Feb 2006 (Forum)
How long does this engine need to run with non pd oil for damage to be done (& what would the damage be)? Skoda serviced the car in September but the receipt showed normal oil being used. i noticed the mistake the day after and they changed the oil within 100miles. they also insisted that the receipt had been filled in incorrectly and that pd oil had been used (i wasn't so sure and insisted on the oil change). -
I Have A Question Volume 115 9 Feb 2006 (Forum)
So he has cut out a two-inch-ish gap in the old plaster, back to the brickwork. He has purchased a plastic sleeve in which to run the two cables. (He has of course ensured that he complies with part P.) How does he secure the plastic sleeve to the wall in order to make it sufficiently firm that his plasterer will be able to plaster over it?
