BMW Z1 Roadster - Category B write offs 6 Aug 2010 (Forum)
The vehicle was flood damaged in 2006, and the interior required replacing at a cost of £12000. This information was gained from the insurers who paid out on the vehicle. It`s a BMW Z3. After reading through forums, and doing an HPI check, I discovered that the vehicle had been listed as sc***ped, a category B. I was warned that I should not purchase this vehicle by the HPI check. -
Sat Nav software updates 28 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Then there were the follow on Garmin, stand alone units (in the follow on cars) - You got one free map update on purchase - then it was back to paying for updates and the camera POI`s - though i never bothered. Built in batteries too - and little hard drives whirring away as they covered Europe. I Wonder how much it would cost to cover the world though with those £130 - for - the - UK - discs. -
Slapping pistons - oil and the human ear 4 Apr 2010 (Forum)
Well, I reckon they may be the most likely auditory advisories of antideluvian anxiety - the horse shoes in an oil drum, low frequency cacophonic cornubia of lost love in the tin can of one`s youth. Don`t you just love engine sounds? Perhaps you removed the sound deadening too, so you could hear that `diesely sound` more clearly as you motor along (cough) So you are `tuned in` - you can hear these low frequency engine sounds - as in youth and find them interesting. -
Ford Cougar (1998 - 2000) - 1999 2.0 Battery light Fault 3 Apr 2010 (Forum)
Yesterday however the light came on again and it stayed on permanently. I tested the voltage across the battery and it?s the same with engine on and off so the battery is not charging at all. When I have done tests previously when the light comes on and off I normally get around 13.5 volts.. To 12.8 volts with everything on e.g. lights and heaters etc. -
Mazda Mazda 6 (2002 - 2007) - 03 2.0 Tapping from Engine 18 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Hello everyine, well I have been looking and reading on this forum for many months and have now decided to post, so a big heloo to everyone! :-) Well I know all the stories with Mazda 6's and their problems, just like many other cars. I've had my 2003 Mazda6 diesel 1-2 years now and have different things go wrong with it, more recently my starter was not engaging or squealing on the first turn of the key, however the car would start on the second or sometimes third turn of the key. -
Ford Mondeo II (1996 - 2000) - 00 1.8 Engine cut out - no spark ! 10 Dec 2009 (Forum)
So it looks like it isn?t getting a signal from the ECU. I have checked the continuity back to the ECU connector and that?s ok for both the outer cables I have now drawn a blank. What do I check / do next? -
Peugeot 406 (1999 - 2004) - 99 2.0 Hissing noise 9 Dec 2009 (Forum)
EGR diaghram leaking/not sealing when the valve applies vacuum 2. Leaking/not sealing Solenoid valve(s) 3. Leaking pipe work (Although there is not a lot of these since the HDi 90 has no IC) Any help and feedback would be great. Thank you, Bruce -
Worst bike ever...unless you know better! 22 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Cheekily, (fotunately), I haven't had the pleasure of riding the one that I'd like to nominate, the Norton Commander. Imgine the scene; early 1990's, Regents Street, London, in the run up to Christmas. It's 4.30 in the afternoon, it's wet and it's just turning dark. Visor up, making my way through the traffic I come up behind a member of the London Ambulance Service on the Norton. -
Young at heart 22 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Only yesterday I pulled into a space still warm from a MB SLK. Even met a Rolls once. Once a month or so I am taken 60 miles to visit my owner?s grandchildren. I live in a garage, which I share with some bloke who keeps his lawnmower in there and sometimes plays Jazz Record Requests too loud. But he does keep me clean and makes sure my battery voltage is correct. -
Which new diesel automatic? 5 Jun 2009 (Forum)
I am getting together a short list of suitable cars and would welcome comments, both positive and negative, from owners of the following cars: Audi A3 Sportback 140 S-tronic By the time the options are added it gets quite expensive. BMW 1 Series 118d auto I have heard that the run flats give a harsh ride and that the interior quality isn’t great. Volvo V50 Powershift Some people complain about the poor economy and, according to one of the magazines, is due to be replaced next year. -
Volkswagen Polo III (1994 - 1999) - 1998 1.4 Overheating Radiator Cold 21 May 2009 (Forum)
My S reg 1998 1.4 VW polo cl started over heating last week out the blue never overheated before this I emptied the whole coolant system this weekend and refilled on a hill as not to get any air lock in the system but after leaving it for a while on idle noticed the fan is not cutting in checked fuses all good (doesnt overheat at this point) after idling it high (2500 - 3000)revs with the heater on hot the temp got up to a steady 90 degrees but still not fan cutting in and still not overheating I then took it for a road test and found that the heater warmed up fine and still didnt over heat got back home lifted the bonnet to check radiator fan cutting in which it wasnt and it overheated again. -
Rover - P6 3500 / 3500S 7 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Could one put on a modern 5/6 speed manual (likely ZF)? If not, is an SD1 5-speed any real improvement over the S 4-speed? I know I broke a layshaft on reverse on mine and had to get a replacement 'box... also, what was build quality like on the SD1/Range Rover/TR8/MG RV8 engines like? Likewise, how did the bored-out 3.9 compare with the silky-smooth 3.5? -
Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - 01 1.9 TDI 115 making strange noises 1 Mar 2009 (Forum)
We agreed that it didn?t sound like the engine, which appeared to be quite happy to idle and spin up to 1500rpm. Mr AA?s opinion was that it was either the clutch or the gearbox that was complaining, and that it sounded terminal, so he hauled me home! The car is parked outside my favourite (non-VW) garage and I am at home wondering how large the bill is going to be! -
Cost of spare parts - how long will the scam last? 23 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I understand cats are expensive because they require a lot of metal and a lot of engineering is involved in the manufacturer but I get mad when people are forced to pay £100's for a very simple part on a fairly modern car. £160 for a clutch and bearings including labour and to it the gearbox needs removing etc, how can a TPS cost £320? What also gripes me is dealers who charge £50 for an ECU scan which is fair enough if they know what it means, but half the time they seem to be oh it says you need a new TPS, but it turns out to be the wiring to it, surely you're paying £50 not to let a mechanic do some basic work but for a person to actually diagnose the readouts properly? -
Volvo S60 (2010 - ) - Direct injection petrol engine - a good idea? 17 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Those figures are incredible, and must give diesel buyers something to think about, given that 119g/km has to be accompanied by mpg figures somewhere up towards the 50's, and on fuel that's still about 12p per litre cheaper. I have the prececessor to this car with an engine making the same power output but from 400cc more and with 100g of extra CO2 per km. To me, this is real progress in terms of raw figures, although I would miss the five pot burble. -
Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - 1998 1.6 exhaust blowing? 17 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Hi all I have a S reg Ford Escort 1.6 16v petrol. The car has done 103500 approx miles and I use it as a run around for my work. Afew months back the exhaust started blowing, I took it to the mechanic who has been looking after my cars for years and after having a good look around the car informed that it was the middle bit of the exhaust that was blowing, it may last alittle longer as it wasn't blowing excessively but would need a new middle exhaust evenually, also the cat converter was falling apart but again it was not determental at the present time but would need sorting out before the next MOT. -
Daewoo Nubira (1997 - 2003) - Myriad of faults 16 Nov 2008 (Forum)
It has had a few non-terminal faults for a while now (which I simply have not had time to fix) but I think the latest one has the potential to tip it over the edge. 1) Momentary drop in revs when the gas pedal is pushed while the car is cold. I believe this to be the coolant temperature sensor. 2) Air idle control valve is u/s -- car revs too high, and cleaning it off isn't really working any more. Cost for a replacement is around £140 due to being a Daewoo rather than a Vauxhall -- tsk. I *might* be able to get one from Australia for £60. 3) Oil leak from the cam cover -- cheap fix but it all mounts up. -
Volkswagen Caddy Kombi (1998 - 2000) - 2003 1.9 TDI Loss of power 10 Nov 2008 (Forum)
I know a bit about cars, however i'd like some advice from someone who knows these engines better than i for some answers on the possible fault/s and remedies. I'm hoping it's not damaged the turbo just has some water stuck somewher in the system...(i'm hoping, but i doubt it!) please advise. {edit to suject line - no need to repeat in the subject line what you've already selected from the drop down menus and compulsory fill in boxes} -
Volkswagen Phaeton (2002 - ) - Am I nuts? Or just plain old fashioned mad? 7 Nov 2008 (Forum)
We have settled on getting a 2.0 TDi SE DSG as the replacement and are very much looking forward to enjoying the extra power and equipment over our current poverty spec 1.9 TDi S. Now. On to the subject of the post. Sitting in one corner of the dealer's showroom is a brand new, unregistered Phaeton 3.0TDi V6. In black. The price tag says £29,995. So, I ask the salesman: "Why so cheap?". -
Grease and Rust Report-for `old waxers`-like-GB 6 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Observed, Subframes and under-body seams. All still well greased, (bentone-CL) no action required. Now, here`s the thing.. areas in *contact with heavy wheel spray* such as rear swinging arms. Still well coated in waterproof grease, no further coating required. Previous experience, Some proprietary stuff slithers off a hot sump like butter and just seems to disappear off heavy wheel spray areas` while the harder black stuff doesn`t contain oil to creep into the subframe and underbody seams like grease does..
