  • Tapping Rover 75 2L V6 4 Sep 2002 (Forum)
I took it to the Rover garage and they said that a Rover engineer was coming out to inspect it. According to the garage the engineer said that he had heard this before on some other 75's and it was nothing to worry about although they failed to state what the problem is! I was asked to take the car back in a months time for another inspection. The thing is I feel (no...I know I am!)
  • Will it be a Vectra? They said they'd try 1 Apr 2002 (Forum)
Well it just HAD to be, didn't it, after everything you chaps say about them. (Anyway, they didn't have any V8's left). I'm not even sure I've seen one (who was that wag at the back who said "you did but probably didn't notice it"). I have asked for one in blue if possible :-) Surely they can't be that awful?
  • Advice on estate cars...... 13 Mar 2002 (Forum)
I have been most taken with the Volvos, especially the 850. However £6.5K does not seem to go to far when looking at 850's, typically I am looking at a P reg. with almost a 100K on the clock for the engine size and trim spec I desire. Admitadly most of the cars I have seen come with a FVSH, with one or two owners. However when comparing this with a more common Mondeo (or Laguna especially) I could get a lot younger, lower mileage vehicle for my wad.
  • Citroen DS5 - My Road Test Report 13 Mar 2015 (Forum)
My average fuel consumption for the day was 42 MPG, some way short of the 55 MPG combined figure, but there was quite a lot of stop/start city driving, and the engine had only done 2000 miles, so I would expect a figure in the high 40’s realistically. The steering lacked feel for me, contributing to a somewhat remote feeling, so you’re not going to relish attacking twisty bits on A and B roads in this car. All of which brings me to the DS5’s worst point: Ride quality.
  • Celebrating 40 years of the 18-22 series Wedge 27 Mar 2015 (Forum)
Strictly speaking, we were told - by a Mini factory guide who worked there at the time - that the 18-22 was manufactured on the other side of a bypass on land now occupied by a gym, an Audi dealer and a science park, but the 18-22’s body was made on the part of the site from where Minis emerge today. In case the 18-22 Series doesn’t sound familiar to you, you may remember this car as the Princess, or following a demotion and a sex-change, the Ambassador.
  • Chevrolet - Africa Calling 26 Oct 2008 (Forum)
There was only one obstacle - dosh! Sadly, I wasn't exactly flush having invested considerably in my own '40's -'60's collection of Bentleys / Chevy Pick Ups and so on. Granted, renting them out as Cape Town movie "prop" weather beaten vehicles did pay for some of those costly "hospital" bills but if I was going to restore, ship this old Chevy across the Atlantic and film the whole adventure, I needed a partner.

ve been comparing the Ebay prices of local vehicles hitting their reserve and not bought by Singaporian con-men! Against the main dealer px?s with good MOT?s at the local auction which meet reserve. I think I?ve identified an opportunity in the more unusual or slightly higher mileage fleet cars (basically the stuff the independent garages don?
  • Buy a campervan or just not worth it ! 23 Aug 2025 (Forum)
This originally was a very long email so decided to make it shorter for fear of losing everyone's attention ! My wife and I are in our 60's. We have usually one to two weekends a month free now and we love just driving somewhere new with our 2 ( sometimes 3 ) dogs and exploring the local area Nothing nice to us than finding a nice view and just sitting back and chilling with the dogs with a coffee and nice lunch ...
  • Advice Needed: New Insurance and NCB Woes 14 Jun 2025 (Forum)
A few years ago, in my infinite wisdom, I informed the DVLA regarding meds I was taking and wham they slap me as having a drinking problem and now have to go through the absolute s*** show of reapplying every year. The issue comes when I apply for insurance. My current insurance ends early next month. My license runs out at the end of the month. Do I have to declare this with the insurers?
  • any - why can't people keep to their own side 9 Jul 2024 (Forum)
Obviously small Landrovers, Ewok and Freelander size feature regularly doing this and the usual German marques, it's not as if their tyres are going to get muddy or likely to scratch the paint or clout their own n/s mirror because the verges feature a bank and ditch before the well trimmed hedges, the bank ensures they would struggle to end up in the ditch unless deliberately. Is it just me?
  • Renault Clio Mk3 - Nasty ball joint failure on car bought 1 month ago 16 Dec 2021 (Forum)
It had a single advisory at MOT 9 months previously '‘front play in steering rack inner joint(s) both ()'. Since that MOT it has done 1,500 miles, most of those miles by me in the last month since I bought it. Two days ago, on the way home from work, the driver’s side ball joint failed, causing the car to belly flop onto the road and the right half axle to be snapped and ripped from the transmission.
  • Hyundai i30 Crdi - Used car repairs 31 Mar 2021 (Forum)
Has anyone else been in this position and did they get the resolution they wanted, i only want the car repaired.  Are Oxygen sensors on diesel i30's unreliable?
  • Hot smell from rear wheel post service. 17 May 2020 (Forum)
The third day (yesterday) i arrived at my destination, got out and immediately noticed a hot smell. Investigation revealed the o/s rear wheel was hot. Now to my untrained mind, this suggested a binding brake. But, while i have not had the opportunity to jack up the rear to try and spin the offending wheel, it certainly doesn't feel like it is binding.
  • Audi Q3 - Car on order with all the things Backroomers hate! 15 Mar 2020 (Forum)
The Audi Q3 on the other hand was very impressive, both loved it. Same engine as that in Skidpan's forthcoming Superb. So it has a S-Tronic gearbox, an electric handbrake and cylinder on demand technology, all things we tend to advise people to steer clear of, certainly with a second-hand purchase. A bit of research suggests this is the 6 speed wet clutch DSG, as opposed to the dry clutch 7 speed which was the more troublesome.

  • Time for sensible winter tyre laws? 7 Feb 2019 (Forum)
I think taking to a wintry road on tyres you know are likely to leave you stranded, causing hassle for hundreds if not thousands of other people is anti-social. Take the decision away from the style over substance idiots and make M&S tyre mandatory in the winter.
  • "Rogue" roundabout - left lane to turn right !! 14 Nov 2018 (Forum)
Which is great for local drivers, and madness for everyone else. I can't help wondering how a collision would pan out in a situation like that. The council(s) seem to have abrogated all responsibility, figuring that drivers will just work it out amongst themselves.
  • Average miles per annum car - Why so much attention paid to fuel consumption? 7 Oct 2018 (Forum)
So clearly, for most people the rate of depreciation per annum is far more important than studiously comparing fuel economy figures to the nearest decimal point.   As for EVs with 'free' energy,  there are a couple of two year old Tesla S cars (much the same size as a Ford Mondeo) for sale at around £47,000 having done (slightly above average) 20,000 miles.   Assuming cost price of  £72,000 that's 125p per mile!
  • Private Hire Taxi Emissions Regulations 2020? 25 Jul 2018 (Forum)
Hence Im asking all these questions and hopefully get help here so I know which car to get to own that wont affect me when it comes to 2020 regulations and beyond. When a person invests £1000's its sensible to ask first to make sure its right which is understandeable. Ok if I buy a private hire car now, which cars will pass the Euro 6 or Ultra-Low emission vehicles checklist? Which regulation the car must meet?
  • Petrol, AWD, auto - which SUV? 7 Feb 2018 (Forum)
So far I figured out following models only     Suzuki Vitara (quite small) SX4 S-cross (slightly bigger but still small) Toyota RAV4 (pricey and bit larger than my need) Mitsubhish Ellipse Cross (not yet in market but boot seems small) Nissan Qashqai     I currently drive Kia Ceed.
