  • the dealers guide to scams..... 21 Nov 2017 (Forum)
It was quite a game as the service manager knew exactly what was coming after each service. But he was powerless to stop the system from automatically charging for the item, and had to put through a manual refund each time. I wonder how many other small items are used to scam punters? You only need a couple more like this one to pay for the managers annual salary.

  • Is it usual for a belt tensioner to go off centre and shred the belt? 20 Aug 2017 (Ask HJ)
Is it usual for a belt tensioner to go off centre and shred the belt? This was the case with our Peugeot 3008 at 28,000 miles.
  • 1.8 Toyota Verso CVT fuel economy 23 Jul 2017 (Forum)
I purchased a 2014 Verso with a 1.8 CVT automatic gearbox a few months back. The fuel economy has been less than I expected especially considering the Real MPG on the site. A couple of weeks of daily short trips in London got me ~24mpg. Up the M25/M1 with AC on and speed around 80mph I achieved 32mpg; on the return journey at night using cruise control for large parts at 75mph and no AC I got 38mpg.
  • Car - Car suggestions for a first time buyer! £3000 19 Jul 2017 (Forum)
I'm a first time buyer who has very little knowledge about cars and their configurations and would like some suggestions for a 'reliable car' with an automatic transmission and with an engine size between 1.6-2.0L, and for less than £3000. So far I've been suggested (by no car enthusiasts) the Ford Focus Zetec 1.6L and the BMW 320D 2.0L which both seem appealing enough, but I don't want to make any decisions without being consulted by someone who's more informed.
  • Honda Shuttle/Odyssey - Bye bye Honda Shuttle - what next 28 Apr 2017 (Forum)
She's failed the MOT not only on various tyre/brake/suspension items but also on emissions of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and, for good measure, 'dense blue smoke.' So how can we hope to replace it ? My wife demands Japanese reliability in a petrol automatic with ample space for the approaching car boot season, and 7 seats for taking the family to Poland, and under £7000.  Any thoughts? Mazda 5? Toyota Verso? Or stick with Honda http://www.exchangeandmart.co.uk/used-cars-for-sale/honda/shuttle/honda-shuttle-odyssey-absolute-2.4i-v-tec-18686815 or even a Shuttle http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201703012821700?

  • Golf Match 1.6 TDI - 51,000 too high 2012 plate - or should I buy DSG 15 Sep 2015 (Forum)
If I didn’t go with this I could choose the later 2012 plate that has 30,000 on the clock but is £11,500 and is a DSG... Not too sure about DSGs as automatics are an unknown to me.  I have always been told to go low milage with used cars - but then is 51,000 miles low or high for a diesel. Is the price a rip off. It is a usal VW dealership with the warrenty and roadside assist etc but I'm concerned I will be paying for it later on.

  • Testing hand brakes 23 Jun 2015 (Forum)
Some BRs, replying to the recent thread on electronic parking brakes, said they very rarely applied the handbrake, especially with automatic gearboxes. I was brought up with the old asbestos linings, and drum and disc steels that were very reluctant to corrode when the car was left unused for a while.
  • Why is my Ford Focus using so much fuel? 13 Nov 2014 (Ask HJ)
I have purchased a 2005 Ford Focus 1.6 automatic. However, it uses lots of fuel and I'm getting about 21mpg. Is this normal? And if not, what could be...
  • Mazda 3 - Skyactiv 2.2 diesel engine-low mileage suitability 17 Apr 2014 (Forum)
However, I've come across a number of HJ comments (see links below) reassuring potential buyers that the new Mazda 2.2 Skyactiv diesel engine should not suffer DPF problems thanks to its exhaust manifold in head configuration. I have a choice between an automatic 120 PS petrol Mazda 3 2014  and a manual 2.2 150 PS diesel. The cost is about the same but the petrol comes with leather interior. I expect the diesel to be worth about 30% more than the petrol when I come to sell it in ~8 years time.

  • BMW E39 530i sport - Advice needed on rejecting a car!!! 1 Oct 2013 (Forum)
Story is, I bought a second hand 2001 BMW 530i sport Auto on August the 8th this year with 70,719 miles and paid £2995. 7 weeks and 540 miles later the automatic gearbox has failed,it's lost drive in 3rd and 4th. Had a mechanic recover it this morning to find the issue and he's found teeth from the gears in with the oil and says it needs replacing or rebuilding.
  • Need reliable, smooth-riding, auto mimser-killer. 1 Sep 2013 (Forum)
Hello, All, I need a four/five-seater automatic with smart upper-legal-speeds acceleration. It's for a 180-miles-in-an-evening trip on busy-both-ways A-roads which are mostly single-carriageway, and bendy at that.  Get caught in the wrong car behind a lorry/caravan/mimser doing 45mph on a lengthy 60mph section with regular oncomers and that's half as long again it'll take you.
  • Suggest a car for my father? 23 Jun 2013 (Forum)
So, please suggest a modest sized, slightly higher than normal car with the ability to order things like in built satnav, leather seats, petrol, automatic, good visibilty etc.  Sounds like a job for a Juke as SWMBO has, but I'm sure its the right car for him.  Something like the Honda CRV is probably unnecessarily big.
  • Petrol or Diesel? 21 Mar 2013 (Forum)
I currently have a Honda Civic 2.2 i-cdti but will be looking at some point to change. I would prefer a car with an automatic gearbox and preferably diesel for better economy (depreciation not much of an issue as i will be looking for a car about 2-3 years old) but most diesels now have a dpf as standard which can get clogged.
  • Fabia 3 estate 1.6 auto - petrol - Should I buy this car? 14 Sep 2012 (Forum)
Hello, First post but I've read a lot of the old threads. I've taken first option on a 59plate fabia estate 1.6 petrol, automatic gearbox, top spec. It is a rare, and doesn't seem to appear in the brochures or in webland. I assume the engine is a 1.6 FSi usually found in the octavia, and am prepared to use 5-star petrol (am I showing my age!)
