  • I miss my diesel! 23 Aug 2012 (Forum)
No kickdown of any description, and almost no power reserves.  Lots noise but no oomph. Its like a really old car from my youth of the 1970s with very small engines that you to row along and really think and anticipate whilst driving.  Good for brainpower, but quite taxing on a two hour journey with kids in the back and being used to pressing the go pedal and.....well......going!
  • Rover 25 - Re-taxing my Cat D written off car 9 Jan 2012 (Forum)
How do I re-tax it if I have no reminder, looked at DVLA's website and am wondering if I have to take it for an inspection to have it verified.... i seem to remember being put on a 3 way telcon with myself, the DVLA and my ins co during the time of me negotiating buying my car back from them, and they mentionied something about an inspection when i next need to tax my car... i am in the process of trying to sort out a new car but i obviously need to tax it until i have done so.... any advice would be welcomed thank you.
  • VW Golf 1.9 TDi PD engine 115bhp - Loss of power - poor acceleration 14 Sep 2011 (Forum)
I read various reviews on here so i bought a new air mass meter for the car, In the first 5 minutes of fitting it, the car pulled really well accelerating beyond the 2800 revs for each gear, was still pulling in 6th gear. Next day the car still felt poorly but better, I have found that if it feels sluggish and i pull over-turn off the the car then restart it it seems to work better.
  • Golf 160 GT - Lease Company - rights and wrongs 5 Apr 2011 (Forum)
Hi, My lease car has broken down on three separate occassions now. The net result is that it has been off the road for a total of 42 days and it is not yet 2 years old. For two of the breakdowns I phoned the emergency assistance number on the lease card that they sent me.
  • VW Polo 1.4 petrol - New VW Polo, new engine after only 4000 miles 12 Sep 2010 (Forum)
After finding a few spots of oil on my drive and some oil spray in the engine bay I booked in my new model VW Polo 1.4 petrol into the dealer last Friday with what I thought was a small oil leak. Yesterday they told me the news that it requires a new engine. The car is only 4 months old and had up till then covered just over 4000 trouble free miles. The engine will be replaced under the cars warranty (at the time of writing this I do not yet know why the engine change is required).
  • Citroen Berlingo Multispace - Importing a previously registered UK car 5 Aug 2010 (Forum)
Hello,   This October I'm planning to fly out to Alonissos (a Greek island) to pick up my Granddad's X reg Berlingo, and drive it back to the UK via Italy, Switzerland and France. My Granddad bought the car in the UK as normal back when he lived here, and used it to travel out to Greece when he moved there. Back in 2004, he officially exported the car from the UK. It was never registered in Greece, as it was over 10 years old and could not be registered.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 01 1.6 Erratic idle, air con & almost cutting out 28 Jan 2010 (Forum)
He thought that it might be the Idle control valve so he replaced that but it didnt change anything, so he put the old one back in. I have just serviced it myself - changing plugs, oil and filter and air filter. Also if i have the aircon on the car will not over idle, the gurgling sound kind of dissapears and the car doesn't feellike it will stalll.
  • Buying my first car 20 Mar 2009 (Forum)
I've been out visiting some private dealers today and am considering buying one of the following: 1. Ford Fiesta Ghia '97 R reg £1395 Am worried that such an old car will be a real money pit but it looks in good nick and has a nice spec for its age. Also attracted to the low purchase cost and maybe getting 2/3 years out of it. 2. Ford Fiesta 02 reg £3195 Over-priced but is has FSH from Ford garages and 44000 miles, one former owner.
  • Ford KA, KA2, KA3 (1996 - 2008) - 2002 1.3i - oil top up followed by white smoke??? 20 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Could it be the fresh oil working its way through the engine and a lot of gunk being moved around, in which case will it clear eventually? Or could it be something more serious and related to the car having little oil in it last week? I have to say the car has not been serviced for about 2 years. Personally I have my car serviced regularly, but I though the Ka's engine was a tough one, using simple mechanicals from the old Ford Anglia.
  • Irrelevance of FSH? 19 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Both told me it has no real effect on the p/ex value nor were the slightest bit bothered about seeing the history documentation. This exact same scenario happened when I purchased this car and part ex'd the old one in 2004! It makes me wonder about the necessity of maintaining that nice neat row of dealer stamps to keep up the value of the car when it has no bearing on what I am offered for it.
  • Need a car for £100 2 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Do any of you have any suggestions on what would be a good thing to get, or indeed what it is best to avoid? Been leaning towards old examples of BMW/Mercs as in theory will have good engines but I don't really know how accurate that perception is. Simpler cars (Ford etc) will be easier to maintain or repair. Thanks in advance for any suggestions :-)
  • 1986 Mini - go with my head or heart? 11 Dec 2006 (Forum)
The one he is selling was purchased last November for his daughter but as she now travels an hour a day the car is a little impractical to say the least. What worries me is that it's 21 years old (or as good as) and obviously has started to show one or two rust bubbles in the usual places. As it's always been my dream to own a 'proper' mini this could be my last chance but I don't want to waste the £800 they're asking (plus inevitable repairs on a car this age).
  • Sat Nav problem 10 Dec 2006 (Forum)
It seems the upgrade process is difficult and "doesn't always work properly" and that sometimes they need the car for several days to get it working!!! I asked for the work to be done under warranty.... not unreasonable, the car is just less than 3 years old, and surely a DVD based sat nav system is designed specifically so that the customer can upgrade the discs.
  • Volvo V70 TDi classic - opinions ? 11 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I am considering buying an old shape volvo V70 with a TDi engine - I understand it is an Audi 5 cylinder design. Can anyone give me their experiences with these cars, both good and bad ? I have noticed that most of these cars for sale have very high mileages ~100K+ Do these cars still have plenty of life left in them, or will they become complete money-pits.....?
  • Insurance: declaring modifications 17 Mar 2006 (Forum)
As a few of you may remember, I ploughed my wife's Vectra estate into a kerb in the snow a couple of weeks ago. It turned out to be an insurance job. I have now got the car back. The car is an 'LS' model, about a year old when purchased. It had steel wheels as standard. Just after I bought the car, (it was a wedding anniversary present, ahhhh!) I fitted some SRi alloys to the car for her.
  • Renault's insane design 12 May 2005 (Forum)
I usually avoid Renualts like the plague - but the owner is the husband of my wife's close friend. Anyway, the car wouldn't start and after several hours with a 'scope and meter I eventually found a broken wire running from the crank sensor to the ECU. The wires are really thin and the plastic had gone hard and fractured - this on a car only four years old!

  • Problem with Clio 5th Gear 28 Oct 2004 (Forum)
I have a 2 month old Renault Clio. The problem I am getting is that more often than not the car just will not go into 5th gear. Its like something is stopping it. I have noticed that it seems to happen more often on slight hills (I think its when the revs are at about 3000).
  • Expected Battery Life 25 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I have just had a complete battery failure on my just over 3 year old Skoda Fabia 1.9tdi. The car was bought new and has covered 61,000 kilometers. Is this extremely short life usual? I know that usage patterns affect a battery, but in my case, the car rarely sits in the garage for more than three days before a decent shopping trip run of between 20 to 35 kilometers each way is done.
