Problem with Clio 5th Gear - purpleparrot
I have a 2 month old Renault Clio.

The problem I am getting is that more often than not the car just will not go into 5th gear. Its like something is stopping it. I have noticed that it seems to happen more often on slight hills (I think its when the revs are at about 3000).

This is getting quite embarassing when a car is behind me and I am stuck in 4th gear trying to get to 5th. I release the clutch and try again and sometimes it doesnt go in until the 4th attempt!

I had it in the garage a few weeks ago and they could find nothing wrong with it (I guess they only drove it 1 mile). I drive 50 miles round trip every day.

At first I thought it was something I was doing wrong but I have got used to the car now since I have been driving a manual for 2 months (being an auto driver for 2 years).

Sometimes when I do get it into 5th it seems strange when moving the stick (a similar feeling to when you have to press the gearstick down to put a car into reverse).

Can someone please help sort this out because I am at the end fo my tether. I am going to phone Renault tomorrow and book my car in for the second time

Its quite possibly the linkage that needs adjusting - get the garage to set the linkage according to the factory manual.

Hi,

Among a number of possibilities that will cause this;

1) Badly adjusted linkage / remote mechanism
2) Faulty interlocking mechanism
3) Faulty synchromesh

If you find that with the engine off, you can select fifth more readily, this points to number 3 on the list. While driving, if you also find that varying the revs, as you apply light pressure on the gearlever towards fifth, to manually synchronize the gears allows you to select fifth, this further suggests item 3.

Items 2 or 3 will need the gearbox to be removed and stripped.

Sounds remarkably like the MK3 Escort problem back in 87..A batch had sychro cone probs.Though as I recall it wasn`t a call back..May be wrong but sounds like it?.I think Aprilia and NC covered the rest.

The garage have just called and cannot find anything (again!).
I said you probably have to take it for longer distances.

Maybe they should have the car for a week (although I don't fancy they idea of someone else driving my car for a week). Anyway I suggested this and they said they have someone elses car in a for a week at the moment but will consider mine after.

They are going to take it out again now and see what happens. I just can't believe it is ok for other people!
