Why Not Signum? 4 Mar 2005 (Forum)
This high depreciation car seems a bargain to me; I tested a used one last week-end and it was £10,000 less than new, at just 14 months old! Why is it poorly reveiwed. Just because executive hatchbacks aren't popular shouldn't knock stars off its rating compared to (say) a Vectra. -
Toyota Avensis Advice 5 Feb 2005 (Forum)
The never ending saga of what to replace my old Passat with continues. Having read in another thread what one get for £12K I am now reviewing my choice of cars and my eye has fallen on an Avensis. There are 2 cars I quite like the look of. Both are 1.8 T3 S 5 door, 03 plates, registered in 2003. -
FAO Hagglemeisters 24 Jan 2005 (Forum)
I want to make a bid on a Mazda MX-5 soon, but I'd like to get some price and haggling advice first, if I may. The car I want is a 2002 1.8 special edition model, with 28k miles on the clock. The asking price is £11k, and it's been offered at that price for the last seven or so weeks. I think £11k is a little high because: i) thats higher than the Parkers Guide estimate, ii) the car's almost three years old, and there's hardly any warranty left on it, iii)it's on an '02' plate, and the '05' plate change is only five weeks away, iv) the Mk. 3 is launched on March 3 (which may soften current model values), v) it's been with the dealer for seven or eight weeks already, vi) I can get a '53' 1.8 or a '52' 1.8 Sport for the same money at a nearby car supermarket (but we really like the colour and interior trim of this particular special edition). -
Buying a 5 Series 25 Oct 2004 (Forum)
It should, in theory, be possible to purchase a facelift E39 5 Series on around an X or a Y plate, in excellent condition, from a BCA Top Car Auction for around £10k. You could run this car for a year-18 months, putting no more than average mileage on it, and then sell the car privately for the price you paid at auction - around £10k. You could then use this £10k to buy a replacement E39 5 Series, say, on an 02 or 52 plate by this time. -
Should I change my auto box oil? 19 Aug 2004 (Forum)
As far as I know, the auto box fluid in my Omega GLS 2.0 16V hasn't been changed. The car is only 3 yrs old and has covered nearly 90,000 miles - probably mainly motorways. I noted in the Haynes manual they suggest replacing the auto box oil in high mileage vehicles after 3 yrs, but when I called Vauxhall they told me it isnt necessary to change it. -
Citroen Xsara: Replacement Key 11 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I'm tempted to ring them up, tell them I don't want it any more, and then leave it to the credit card company to sort out. Is it essential that my car is used? If they can program through the car, why did I get charged for the codes? -
New Girlfriend: new car? 15 Dec 2003 (Forum)
I like the BMW 320 diesel, meets most of the requirements except the last one. Would a secondhand one be a good choice? Or something comfy and cheap like a C5? How old? Other factor is that I like driving on roads other than motorways and so something that handles well is a preferred choice. Any thoughts? Sparrow -
DIY Bentley 5 Dec 2003 (Forum)
CAR nut Andy Saunders built a Bentley-based car using parts from 14 DIFFERENT motors. The striking model includes bits from a Volvo, Suzuki, and even an old Austin Maestro & Montego. The boot lid is from a Ford Focus, glass roof from a Merc, headlights from a Range Rover, Mazda MX5 petrol cap, leather seats from a Volvo S60, door mirrors from an Audi TT, spoilers from an MG Maestro. -
Drivers or car operators - Discuss 19 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Does anyone agree with me that manufacturers have reduced most of us from being drivers to being car operators. Agreed that some innvoation is in the interests of improving safety for the less experienced motorist, but it seems to have detracted greatly from the "skill" required to drive. Take your 18year old boy racer out of his new clio or corsa and stick him in a MkII escort from the late 70's see how far he travels on that B road before he gets a close up of the hedges. -
Creaky Mondeo 3 Sep 2003 (Forum)
I have a 2000X Mondeo Ghia estate, one of the last old shape cars. Over the last year a virtually constant creaking has been coming from the dashboard, seemingly from behind the instrument cluster. It seems to happen mostly when the weather is cool, or if the air con is on, which must cool and create shrinkage in the depths of the dashboard. -

A car for mum-in-law 26 May 2003 (Forum)
Her 306 is a two year-old 1.6 auto Meridian, it's spotless, cared for like a baby, and has done under 10k miles. So, some suggestions guys and gals. It must be more economical, must be tolerant of a low miles lifestyle, must be able to take a set of golf clubs and a trolley. -
The life & death of a 1.4 CVH Escort 6 Dec 2002 (Forum)
The engine has a rattling noise which all cvh engines have mostly when you accelerate between 40-50 mph in fifth gear, in this car that noise is heard when you try to hold the speed at 50-60 mph in fouth or fifth gear and it is loud? Is it one of the following: 1: Worn big/main bearings 2: Worn camshaft 3: Worn crankshaft 4: Pinking due to wrong timing due to lack of love 5: Pinking due to old owners use of unleaded in a leaded car and allowing for this in the timing Hope you can help SM -
Engines, 1960's & Today 9 Jan 2002 (Forum)
I came across some stored treasures the other day. Amongst them were old handbooks & maintenance manuals of past owned everyday cars, including Morris Minor, Triumph Herald 12/50, Alfa Romeo Alfasud and Morris Mini cars. Up to the early 1980's cared for engines wore out very quickly, with mediocre lives of approximately 70,000 miles. -

Saab 900 Convertible. 12 Jun 2001 (Forum)
Had a day over at the "posh" side of the family in The Cotswolds yesterday. I was asked to advise on a Saab 900 convertible for a family/second car, and to comment on what could be found for £10,00. Now in the 80s I owned three Saab 900s so know that old model well, and lately have been offered/seen very cheap 9000s. But as to this 900 convertible, I know very little. -
Skoda Octavia II (2004 - ) - Both cars - first service. 14 Jan 2009 (Forum)
The car looks very plain in Ambiente trim (15" alloys, no exterior chrome, no spots etc) but is fairly quick (139 mph, 0-60 7.8 seconds). The six speed box is slicker than the 5 speeder in my old Mk1 Octavia's and is geared at just under 30 mph/1000 revs in top, so makes it a relaxed cruiser on the motorway. -
Help! Which car? 8 Feb 2024 (Forum)
Hi, I'm completely clueless when it comes to cars. Just go for which I like the look of. So I'm after some advice. I'm looking to trade my Audi A1 63 plate in for a newer car. Not brand new, between 2/5 years old. Key things are; Great mpg. -
N/A - Squatters in my garage 17 Dec 2020 (Forum)
The son buys and sells cars from home (not in this street) and the car in the garage is SORN. She has parked her car on the adjacent road so that the garage entrance is now blocked. The police are still not interested because the son's trespass is a civil law issue not a criminal offence. -
Skoda Octavia 2006 Petrol 1.6 - Engine cuts off while Driving Problem 8 Apr 2019 (Forum)
When engine cuts off you get the usual lights on dashboard then they disappear when car is driving normally. While driving sometimes the engine cuts off altogether in which I have to turn off the car fully then wait for a sec or two then start the car again in which it starts no problem and I can continue driving normally for miles without further problems.
