  • Toyota gearbox reliability... 8 Sep 2003 (Forum)
My 2.5 year old Corolla, with 100k, now has a nasty whine and my Toyota garage tells me it probably has a duff bearing - so a £300++ strip down job.... Annoying thing is the gearbox has been the one bad point of the whole car - it has been difficult to use since I bought it (compared to other Corolla's I drove as courtesy cars) - and 3 dealers I tried to get to fix it under warranty all told me it was fine - even though it wasn't - I'm convinced I must have had a Friday Job - odd since it's a Japanese built model, too... anyone think I can pursuade Toyota UK to help out financially here ?
  • Head Gasket 309 23 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Basically my garage estimate £300 to £450 for the job depending on level of destruction. The car has never over-heated and i do not currently use it. What about doing the job myself? I am very amatuerish in this respect however! thanks martin
  • '99 Accord - oxygen sensor 6 Nov 2007 (Forum)
It's still under a 3-month used warranty (not with Honda, but supplied by the dealer), but they reckon the warranty people say it's not covered (as "the exhuast system" is excluded). Any ideas gratefully received - I am thinking about calling up another dealer to get the price of the sensor itself for starters, but where I go from there I am not sure - don't want to be driving the car about if it will eventually damage the catalytic converter.
  • Peugeot 307 SW - 1.6 petrol, 04 plate - Problems starting 17 Jan 2011 (Forum)
There have also been countless other occasions when it has started but only on the 2nd or 3rd twist of the key (note: no turn-over on the first attempts - nothing at all - but then suddenly life). On the occasions when the car has refused to start itself, then jumping or bumping has got it started on the first attempt. The garage we bought from gave us a 3 month warranty so we've had it back to them a few times to look at.
  • Ford Focus 1.6 Engine Troubles 5 Apr 2007 (Forum)
The car is currently in the garage with the head off - I've seen it myself, there's a lot of movement on the pistons. I have been quoted £1500 (or, in other terms, half the value of the car on a good day) for a replacement 'short block' engine, including fitting and VAT by Ford, and a bit less (£1k-£1200) by an independent specialist (using a brand new Ford block).
  • Mazda 2 - Mazda 2 1.4 Diesel - Cutting out when cold 8 Jun 2014 (Forum)
I have just bought a cheap late 2003 Mazda 2 1.4 diesel with 100,000 miles which I believe is based on the Fiesta 1.4 TDCi engine.  I have an issue where I start the car first thing in the morning and it runs for about 2 seconds.  It then cuts out and will not start.  If I prime the fuel using the hand primer in the engine bay I can see air bubbles moving in the clear fuel line.
  • DSG Transmissions 8 Jun 2013 (Forum)
BUT - stories of DSG issues abound, initially VAG dry clutch designs replaced by wet clutch designs for higher torque applications - but now issues with wet clutch DSGs - Ford Powershift has had complaints from drivers, in at least one case with Ford buying the car back. Now I've used traditional automatics for half of my 4 decades of driving and always laughed at the doomsters who warn that repair costs are so much higher than conventional manual gearboxes - yes they are higher but both types fail so rarely that no-one repairs gearboxes, manual or automatic, on ordinary cars these days so the cost difference is academic.
  • Chevrolet Epica - I Trusted Them. I'm a fool! 15 Sep 2011 (Forum)
I have finally snapped! when I bought the car from a large national dealer, the pdi check wasn't done there were faults and it was delivered with 4 tyres with dangerously low tyre pressures. The next dealer fixed the mirror but that needed  two 60 mile trips, then the aircon and oil leak were fixed and at my request an oil change was done and the wrong grade used, ok, refunded and done elsewhere, then following service specified grade, but thw wrong spec used, so oil change done again.
  • Help pick an SUV, auto, petrol Max £16K 5 Jun 2018 (Forum)
Must be high seating (so SUV think), petrol only (conditions are always town driving so don't want diesel, DPF issue etc), automatic. Under 16K and ideally year 17 on so have some manufacturers warranty. Also like the look of Android Auto/Apple CarPlay for phone connection with a nice large touchscreen. Not too bothered on inbuilt sat nav as can use the phones sat nav as only used sparely anyway.
  • Volkswagen Golf V (2004 - 2008) - 05 1.6 Diagnostic Codes explanation 7 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Shortly before the last long distance service the Emission light came on (but didn't blink). After a few days the Engine Management light came on and car went into limp mode. Had Service immediately. Warning lights were no longer on and I didn't pay for anything directly related. But there was no 'work under warranty' paperwork either so there is NO RECORD OF PREVIOUS EXHAUST FIX.
  • What have I done? 10 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I've been looking for a trusty car with lowish milage for around £5k for my use to supplement the still awaited Grand Scenic which will be MrsS's main car. Slowly resigned to fact that a decent Pug 406 coupe was out of reach so have been checking the staff intranet site for an ex-company motor.
  • BMW 5 Series Touring - Arnold Clark - Any Advice 25 May 2021 (Forum)
Hi All.  So I'm in the market for a new car, I'm trading in a reasonably well looked after Kia Ceed 4 from 2015.  I'm looking at 520d, the car is lovely is fairly low miles considering it is a 2017 plate (21000miles), however am I fool for considering their warranty - 24 months for £400 and their service plan £250 for 2x service and 2x MOT.
  • Audi A4 diesel saloon - Low-mileage turbro failure 28 Aug 2013 (Forum)
I recently suffered a severe power reduction while motorway driving. My car was 21 months old, I'd had it from new and it had done 25000 miles. It then used a litre of oil in about 6 miles to the garage and subsequently the turbo, exhaust system and DPF had  all to be replaced, fortunately under warranty as estimated cost was £6,000.
  • Help to choose a small car 11 Jun 2008 (Forum)
I'm looking to buy a small car which is mainly to be used in London. Both my daughters want to learn how to drive, so the vehicle must be easy to insure. I have £5,000 to spend. I saw a 2005 Panda Eleganza at a Fiat dealer for some £4.5k and they would also give me a 1-year warranty in addition they would have the vehicle serviced and MOTed prior to delivery.
  • Volvo S40/V40 (1996 - 2004) - 1.9D Cambelt 6 Jan 2008 (Forum)
They've said that if it was a part failure, then we are covered by parts warranty, but have now said that an oil pump seized ! Convenient! Many cars don't drop valves, etc, when a belt goes & I'm trying to find out if this is the case with the V40? Any other advice would also be useful, especially as I may be arguing the case with the dealership.
  • VW Passat (Help,Help) 22 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I have seen a VW Passat Highline TDI (130BHP) for £12699 54 plate advertised in an non VW dealership. I have contacted them and they advised me that it was a British Spec car. On contacting my VW approved dealer to see if they could better the price, he advised that there was no way that he could better the price and at that price it must be an import and that servicing the car would be more expensive and if I where to use the warranty it might take wks/months to get fixed as it may have differant gear box for example and that when I traded it in I would get less for it.

  • Mazda MPV 2002 - Discovered fault after 3 weeks, where do I stand. 5 May 2010 (Forum)
Should the dealer be liable or am I on my own?  Under the sale of goods act it states I am allowed reasonable time to ensure the car is in satisfactory condition, but what is a reasonable time?  It also states that the car should be fit for purpose, as it is it isn't, but does this apply to used cars as well as new ones?
  • Mazda 2 - Mazda 2 suspension problem 8 Sep 2016 (Forum)
He tells me that he is going to replace the suspension and no further problems should occur. The dealer also offers 1 year warranty on the car. Being almost ignorant about cars, you can realise that after this discussion I am worried on the quality of the car I bought. Does anyone have any experience on these issues? Is such a problem normal/simple to fix?
  • Golf Mark 7.5 / 2020 - Owned used car 1week, sidewall puncture cheap tyre 8 Aug 2024 (Forum)
The car comes with 2 years used approved warranty which as usual doesn't cover tyres, as classed as wear/tear .... but could we have any come back given we're within the initial 14 days within which no quibble exchange is possible?
