  • Volvo S40/V40 (1996 - 2004) - Diesel buying advice/opinions 22 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Asking price is £1450. are these cars any good? I dont know where I read it or heard it. ...are these renault engines? Are these as well built as the larger volvos we always here about with starship enterprise miles? Any known problems or anything to watch out for? I need the car for a 100 mile daily commute so a cheap reliable diesel is the way forward (I think) Any opinions from current / past owners?
  • 2005 VW Golf Tdi S to 2008 Suzuki SX4 1.6DiiS? 6 Sep 2008 (Forum)
A neighbour has just traded in his 2008 Suzuki SX4 1.6DiiS with 5300 miles for a new Laguna (another child and he needed more room). The car is like new and is very easy to get in and out of. The local Renault dealer is bringing the car round tomorrow so I need some advice: Is the SX4 with the Peugeot 1.6HDi engine a good car? Is it safe and if so how much should we we be aiming to change for? Thanks
  • Mercedes Benz CLK W209 (2002 - ) - What's it like as a hire car ? 31 Aug 2008 (Forum)
But on the windy road to Torrent de Parreis with 4 of us on board changing gear constantly between 2nd and 3rd became a tiresome chore and this car felt slower than the 1.9dci 120 Renault Scenic we rented the previous year. So i've gone all out this year and reserved myself a Mercedes CLK Cabriolet 320cdi. What does this drive like? Will there be room for our luggage as with the 307cc?
  • Newbie with money to burn 2 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Hello all My first post here, but one probably you've seen many times before. I'm after a new car and I have a shortlist of a Ford/Vauxhall/Skoda/Mazda/Renault - you get the picture!. I've trawled the local garages, and I'm now fed up to my remaining back teeth and just want to get a vehicle sorted. Looking at an '07 1.6 petrol C-Max with 11000 on the clock for £8995 and a '54 Nissan Almera Tino with just 16000 genuine miles for £5400.
  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - Overheating in France guess the cost competition ! 1 Jul 2008 (Forum)
    B) How long the repair took. Please bear in mind that I can speak no technical French, that the small town Renault garage (not main dealer) I ended up at works a 6 hour day at best with no overtime and can see a mug coming from 5 km away. By the way, there are worse places to be stuck in than Provence...
  • when is a seller not a trader? 26 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Other motorists clog the road whilst they slow down to look or abandon their cars in order to look round and kick the tyres of tatty overpriced Renault Meganes/Corsas and the odd people carrier or two. The vendor pays no nothing to advertise his cars, pays no rates for premises and a buyer would presumably have no comeback in the event he buys a duffer.
  • Looking for a New MPV, advice needed 29 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Hi all, I currently have a Renault Scenic (51 plate) that I'm looking to replace. Due to a car accident a few years ago, I really appreciate the ease of getting into and out of something higher off the ground. I'm looking to replace my car (most likely with something maybe one year old, at auction) and the following things are important to me: -speedometer and gauges in front of the driver, as opposed to in the centre console (rules out the Picasso) -good fuel economy, ideally a better economy than my 1.9 dTi scenic....
  • Small car for £1.5k Auction or Autotrader/Ebay 26 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Need to get a small car for around the £1500 mark for the other half. I know it is a buyers market at the moment as I have only just sold my Renault Scenic privately after a month of advertising at trade price and there was no queue of buyers at the door! Anyway my question to the backroomers is where is the best value for a car such as 1 - 1.2 litre petrol Clio/Punto/Clio/Swift or something along those lines.
  • Build quality- japan versus the rest 16 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Before this i had a 10 year old ford escort which appeared to be made of 2mm thick tinplate and was going on the arches and sills. The wife has a 10 year old renault scenic rxe and although its a nice car its also getting the tin worm. Apart from an old passat estate i`ve no knowledge of german or swedish machinery Is it because the cars are (were) in different price ranges when new or are japanese cars just made much better in general?
  • 05 1.6 VVt Megane II - rattle on startup 19 Jul 2007 (Forum)
When the noise occurs the car will generally start (sometimes takes a second attempt) and then runs fine for remainder of the journey (apart from some initial hesitation when cold - a trait of these cars I believe?) The cars under warranty and is going back to the garage, but knowing Renaults poor dealer reputation I reckon knowledge is power and would be interested if anyone else has had a similar problem? A little bit of web searching brought up mentions of a dephaser pulley - all a bit too 'Star Trek' for a car!
  • 1998 Scenic 1.6 - Dead Autobox? 28 Aug 2006 (Forum)
This is a friend's car so all of this is a bit third-hand at the moment.... The car is a 1998 Renault Scenic 1.6 Auto (I know, the work of the devil) which yesterday broke down and had to be trailered home. The symptoms were, whilst in Drive (or 1, 2 3) the engine would rev but the car wouldn't move.
  • Most Reliable Cars 8 Aug 2006 (Forum)
The most reliable model was the Honda Jazz with a score of 95% - not one Honda Jazz broke down out of more than 400 in the survey. Medium cars 1st Toyota Corolla, 2nd Mazda 3. Superminis 1st Honda Jazz, 2nd Renault Clio. Large Cars 1st Honda Accord, 2nd BMW 3 Series. Off-roaders 1st Honda CRV, 2nd Subaru Forester. MPVs 1st Toyota Verso, 2nd Citroen Xsara Picasso. Luxury Cars 1st Audi A6, 2nd Volvo V70. The MPVs and Luxury cars top scores were not as high as the other classes.
  • 5th gear prob on Laguna 5 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Hi. I have a 1998 Renault Laguna 1.8 RT Sport. Driving on the M25 today it kept slipping out of 5th gear. There has been excessive movement in the gear stick but I thought the problem was fix when a new rear mount was fitted.
  • Coolant and brake fluid questions? 4 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Planning at some point to change the coolant and brake fluid on the Mondeo, Clio and Kawasaki ZRX, a few questions: 1/ According to Haynes Ford original fit coolant is OK "for the life of the car", I have had it from new so I know it has not been changed for an inferior type or diluted, any thoughts? 2/ Renault and Kawasaki conveniently both specify ethylene-glycol based coolant with corrosion inhibitors suitable for steel/alluminium, what is the best coolant? Halfords own? 3/ The Mondeo requires brake fluid to Ford spec ESD-M6C57-A, Haynes also say Super DOT 4, will any Super DOT 4 fluid meet this Ford standard?
  • Moving abroad: car finance 12 Apr 2006 (Forum)
In two weeks he's going to be heading out to Hungary for 12 months to work there. In the UK he has a Renault Megane which he's been paying off, I think he's about 1/3 of the way through the payments. Obviously, he can't take the car with him and he doesn't want to mothball it and keep paying. The finance company have offered him a settlement figure (circa 5 grand), which he doesn't have the spare cash to pay off in one go.
  • Any auto trans bods in the house? 22 Mar 2006 (Forum)
Hi all, I'm planning a bit of an odd ball project and need your thoughts on a potential transmission problem. To outline the project, I have a 2.2 litre front wheel drive Renault Espace automatic, to which I am planning to mid mount a 4 litre Jag engine and auto box, driving a rear axle. (That's as well as the front engine, not instead of!) I can sort most of the problems with running both ends together, but where I'm going to come unstuck is when in economy mode and just running on the front engine, the rear trans is going to cook its clutches.
  • Two cars to one. 23 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I have suggested something along the lines of a new Golf convertible but it's not available yet. Audi convertible is too big and they won't consider a French motor so no Pug or Renault Coupe/Cabrios! £20,000 budget.
  • Milage reset on New Fiat Punto Active. 15 Jan 2006 (Forum)
I believe I was able to reset it to zero by holding the multifunction button in and then turning on the ignition and holding for 20 seconds, (like VW and Renault service monitor systems). Does anybody else have any other experience of this? Can anybody reproduce? Looks like a great easy way of clocking a car as NO tools were used!! Thanks, Quicksilver.
  • generalising about dealers 25 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Every so often in the Backroom, I read general comments about Citroen dealers, or VAG dealers, or Renault dealers or . . . . These generalisations are rarely complimentary. Can one really generalise that way about all the dealers for a certain marque? I can understand generalisations about dealers for certain manufacturers which are very good, e.g.
  • Megane 1996 - bonk in front suspension 13 May 2005 (Forum)
Since I bought my megane a year ago for my son to learn to drive in, it has had a persistent bonk from the nearside front suspension. The garage (not a Renault dealer) took a look at it a couple of times. First time they reported replacing a worn bolt (location unspecified). Second time they noted a shock leaking and that this could be causing it, so I had the pair replaced with no effect.
